Perison’s is what it is — a counter diner serving up super cheap and super fast meals. While I’ve mainly been stuck to their breakfasts(warning: very little variety) in the 20+ years that I’ve eaten there, on occasion I’ll split a polish platter with my sister and love every second of it. You don’t go to Perison’s for the meal, you go for the experience! Don’t expect overly friendly servers or 5 star meals — but do expect to get a piece of Buffalo history and a really reasonably priced meal!

I work just a hop-skip-and-a-jump from the Broadway Market… and once in a while I stop in for a fresh rye bread or some cookies. But, honestly not all that often because it’s just so darn depressing there. I love markets and I visit them in every city that I go to. Usually they are happy bustling places filled with yummy food, fresh produce, and crowds of people. The Broadway Market, however, looks like it barely survived an Apocalypse. Barely. Except at Easter time. Then it’s filled to the max with happy busy shoppers and the wonderful Polish foods that I grew up with. But when I went for lunch this past Friday it was post Apocalypse plus perhaps a dozen. Seriously. Even half of the vendors from last year were absent. So very, very sad. Perison’s was still there though. The same waitresses were there too. I think the same ladies have been there for the 30(+) years I’ve been going(maybe). And, the menu is the same. Pierogies and sausages and sandwiches and omelets and the(daily, I think) special of barbecued hamburgers. So, OFCOURSE I got ‘em. And, they were just as yummy as always. Great ground beef… great sauce… and PERFECTLY seasoned. I LOVETHEM! The accompanying mashed potatoes were(or perhaps weren’t) instant. I just couldn’t tell. And, the cabbage was an overly boiled soggy mess. And, where oh where was the rye bread that usually came with the platter? I guess it’s true that sometimes you just can’t go home again.

Perisons Restaurant is a stand, not an actual brick and mortar restaurant, located in the Broadway Market. The stand is located in the rear of the market and consists of a counter and kind of a dining area across the from the counter. Growing up here in the 60’s and 70’s the counter was the only dining option. I basically grew up here. Eating out was a treat not to be taken for granted. The food was always good. My current review is based on Friday lunches. The menu has changed somewhat to adapt to different backgrounds however basics are still available. Kluski. I can’t say enough about this potato based delight that comes with either cottage cheese or kraut as a topper. Nice, sour rye as a side. My other favorite would be potato pancakes. Made on the flat top with a home made blend. There are many other tasty dishes to contemplate. My only dis is that whereas once upon a time all the accoutrements were available on the counter to pick and choose at will. Now packets are delivered(butter, ketchup, etc) because of the high loss. There is, to the best of my knowledge although I have not tried recently, no take out. Enjoy.
