I am a die hard Squeaky Wheeler. I absolutely love it! I first became involved my senior year in high school(4 years ago) — I was enrolled in the Buffalo Youth Media Institute. For those of you not familiar with the program it’s where about 10 – 15 students from the Buffalo area apply and are chosen to take part in the program. They learn the basics of filmmaking, given a topic and must research, produce, and edit their own documentaries. At the end their 10 minute films are screened to the public. After my experience with the Youth Media Institute I actually did an internship for about a month and a half. I absolutely love it there, everyone is extremely friendly and always willing to help. Yes, the location is small but I believe that’s what makes squeaky wheel so great. There is a quaint eclectic feel as soon as you walk through the doors. Squeaky has tons of screenings throughout the year. They also offer seasonally workshops to members and non-members also. I have been fortunate enough to take the super-8 filmmaking class with Brian. He is awesome– the whole crew at Squeaky: Jax, Mark, Tammy everyone is so friendly. I love them all! It is a great non profit resource for all people interested in media within the Buffalo area. If you have not already I would recommend getting involved!

I’ve only been to the Squeaky Wheel once, but I’m already a big fan. They have a small, intimate theater downstairs, including a bar, so you can buy a beer while watching your movie. The films they show seem well-selected, all of which are independent. They also offer many workshops, such as flash animation and video editing. These workshops are not free, but they are financially feasible. All in all, I think the Squeaky Wheel is a great organization, and I definitely wouldn’t mind coming again soon.
