Best program in Buffalo – the art is amazing, the participants’ confidence levels soar and this is something very easy to support in our community. Go to a showing! I promise that you will not be disappointed.

Starlight Studio is one of my favorite places in the city – really a hidden gem. The studio is devoted to supporting adults with disabilities in their artistic development. The result is a truly energized, positive, and uplifting space where imaginations are unleashed. The gallery hosts a wide variety of solo/group art shows throughout the year, featuring work by both Starlight artists and other local painters, sculptors, photographers, ceramicists, and more. Most include live music, food trucks, and some snacks. The quality of the artwork is always outstanding. And supporting the studio’s efforts with a purchase(always very reasonably priced) is a double-plus good – you get great art for your home; the studio gets to keep supporting and training these wonderful artists. If you need a serious feel-good, pick-me-up, head to Starlight. I always feel lighter, happier, and more inspired after a visit.

This is a very cool art gallery where all the artists on display and in-residence have some sort of developmental disorder. You’d think the art would reflect that in some way, but I couldn’t tell! A lot of the works on display are something that I could only dream of creating. The space is very open and inviting. There is an artist teacher here, Lily who supports and mentors those who are a part of the Starlight Gallery. The space is bright and they often have live music, wine, etc for First Friday’s and it’s a great time to check them out(or anytime during their regular hours).

I’ve passed the front entrance to Starlight I don’t know how many times and yet never managed to put it on my list of places to visit in Buffalo. An error on my part. I visited briefly today with Starlight Studios Director Carrie Marcotte and LDA* Director of Community Relations Parrish Gibbons who introduced me to the very heart of what Starlight is all about. I had the privilege to tour the artists’ studio and work center, meet with 3 of the artists and view some of the work displayed throughout the gallery. I admit that they possess talents that I sorely lack and that makes me appreciate them so much more. The gift added by Starlight and the *Learning Disabilities Association of WNY(LDA) is that each of these wonderful artists has a learning disability and they come here to learn. They come here to paint and to sculpt and to weave and to create art for the sake of art and for the love of it. And that makes Starlight a great success. Before my visit today I researched some basic info about the gallery from their website which, while factually complete, doesn’t describe the experience you’ll have unless you come through the front door. They’ve accomplished a great deal here, and there’s much more to be done, so come and check them out and see if you find some of the Starlight I found today.
