The Backwoods Maze

The amount of time and quality work that these people put into their maze is amazing. I loved the novel props and costumes… and definitely got a good scare! Can’t wait to go back again this year.

I’m so happy we discovered this place. When we got there we saw a long line (don’t feel bad because though the line is long, it moves pretty fast). When we got in I quickly realized why the line was so long… THIS PLACE IS GREAT! You can see that a lot of time and effort was put into the maze. The props and effects are all great (comparable to what you would see in a theme park like Universal Studios). This maze was definitely the highlight of my Halloween. Looking forward to next Halloween!

This a great family-​run haunt. You can tell they put a lot of love into it, and for being set up in someone’s backyard, the quality of the sets /​props and scares will seriously blow your mind. Entrance fee is donation-​based. Be sure to put this on your Halloween to-​do list!

It wouldn’t be Halloween without a stop at one of my favorite haunts! The line was the usual 10 – 20 minute wait at 8:00pm on a Saturday. Not bad at all.
Like I mentioned in previous reviews, the Backwoods Maze is obviously created and run by people who are true Halloween lovers. It’s amazing how long the maze is when you consider its in a backyard. Amazing and totally professional.
Now while my group wanders through nervously through this impossibly long backyard maze, I prefer to pick up the rear and look at the craftsmanship and creativity of the set design and props. Meticulous and amazing. I am truly in awe every time.
The cast are quite amenable when I mention in a whisper to each of them that the very large 15 year old, two people in front of me, does need to be sneaked up upon and scared and taunted (in a fun non threatening way). Yes, worth the price of the FREE admission (though it would be good form to donate!!!)
It’s just a lighthearted fun place to go… until it is time to scream!

All I can say is W O W. I honestly got more scared here than I did at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights. The maze itself was beautifully made with scares in every corner. The scarers were hidden so well and were great at frightening my whole family. The place is technically free, but after going through it you’ll be more than happy to donate. My family and I will definitely make this a Halloween tradition!

This place is amazing! All of the 5 star reviews are accurate. My friends and I went last night and we screamed our heads off the entire time. The maze is so well thought out, it makes so many turns which provide the actors plenty of places to hide and jump out at you. And the props are amazing! So professional looking. It was like being in a scary movie. I went to Queen Mary a couple of years ago and this maze blew everyone of the Queen Mary mazes out of the water.
This place is hands down the best! Please make sure to donate. This family definitely deserves it for all they’re hard work and great scares!!!

When I first arrived, I was a bit nervous about how long the line was (but also excited because a long line must mean it’s worth it, right?) but got in it anyway. It moved rather quickly and in about 15 minutes, we were right near the front entrance. Unfortunately, a party bus showed up at that exact moment and unloaded a while crew of people who were given the privilege to skip the line. This delayed us another 15 minutes, but it was all completely worth it anyway. Once we got to the «rope,» we were greeted by I’m guessing the owner, who welcomed us with a smile and thanked us genuinely for coming.
Upon stepping inside, I was immediately blown away by the production value– this place was legit! I seriously felt like I stepped into a maze at HHN. Everything was so professionally well-​done from the decorations to the lighting and music to the costumed scare-​actors as well. It was slightly difficult to navigate at first but once we found the right path, I was delighted by every twist and turn!
When we exited, we were thanked once again. I felt so welcome and like a valued customer and I will definitely be recommending this place to my friends and returning next year!

Just finished this for the first time with my wife. We have done all of the major haunts in the LA area (Knott’s, Universal, etc.) and this one is right at the top of the list. There is something special about the fact that it is a local family haunt, but you would never guess it once you step inside. The attention to detail and the quality of the props and settings is at least on par with all of the others we have gone to. I also have to say that this was the first maze that has really gotten me to jump (multiple times) in a while, so that was awesome.
We came out wanting to go back through, but the line had gotten longer and we had to get going. Thank you for creating this awesome experience and we will be back with more friends next year!

This backyard maze blows Knott’s and Universal out of the water. It’s extraordinarily high quality with loads of detail and obvious hard work and they only ask for donations.
There were about 40 people already lined up when we showed up 15 minutes before they opened last night. It’s well-​worth the wait and, for us, well worth the drive.
They only let a couple individual parties through at a time, so it’s not a constant stream of people like at the amusement parks. It’s much more personal, frankly.
The maze is a mixture of themes, reminding me of Knott’s glory days gone by, with aliens, mutants, backwoodsmen, and asylum escapees running around, relishing in the screams of those who come to visit them.
Each area is loaded with props and well-​done set pieces, sounds effects, and great lighting. We found ourselves stopping to take in the views, staring up in total awe at all the intricate parts. The party behind us caught up to us while we were just looking at everything, so amazed. They frantically insisted on our continuing ahead of them (even when we said they could go through since we might stop occasionally), because they wanted us to act as scouts for them, thinking the monsters would go for us and leave them be. Amusingly, the monsters would hang back as we grinningly strolled through and scared the crap out of those people behind us without missing a beat. It’s all professional-​grade.
This attraction is a lot of fun and the people who put it together are really cool. The man managing the line out front makes a point of turning back and asking everyone exiting if they had a good time and answers all of their questions. On coming out I asked if he was in show business and he said his son was. We’re all so lucky they did up their backyard like this and invite everyone out.
These folks do Halloween right. I’d give them more stars if I could.

According to the man controlling the line, they’ve been doing this for 15 years, but in the last six years, his son and grandson started decorating the front of the house. I won’t go into details, but it was very well put together and they have really cool props inside.
I do think you should go in twos so that you get more of a scare. My 8 and 10 year old niece and nephew went through and they were complete scaredy acts. I heard a lot of screams, some even from myself.

Came here last night, after seeing the vid review by Theme Park Adventure. I’ve actually wanted to visit for years but never had the chance… It was awesome. The attention to detail was incredible. The actors were very personable and very much in character! Please make it a point to donate when you visit. It’s one of the best haunts I’ve been to. I’m looking forward to coming again next year! Thank you, guys!

Holy cow– this place was so cool! We went this past Saturday night– the line moved quickly and before we knew it we were in the front of the line. The father of the owner of the home was the one letting separate groups in, and he was super friendly– he made easy conversation with each group as they were getting ready to go in. Then it was our turn… I had read the reviews on Unilocal,and you really honestly do think — «How cool can it be? It is in a backyard!» Let me tell you– it IS that cool. Everything from the costumes, set up, sets, sound effects, ambiance, and actors! Nothing gives away the fact that you are indeed in someone’s backyard and not in a professional haunted house! The scares were expertly timed– the group I was with (me, another girl, and a guy) all screamed a ton and had pounding hearts when we left! (I was literally sweating when I left!) The best part about it is the price– FREE (donations accepted, so why not leave some $?). This is especially awesome if you, (like me) don’t have an arm and a leg to spend on Universal or one of the other over priced haunts in the city– you can still get your scares in and really not feel like you are compromising on the quality! I am so grateful that they put this on each year– I plan to make this part of my Halloween tradition from now on!

They’re open! First time at this maze for me and the kids. It really is as cool as the review say it is. Stood in line with a bunch of «cool» teens who ended up running out at the end of the maze relieved it was over. I guess I’m not the only scaredy cat…

This place is so cool. It’s a private house in Burbank neighborhood. I spoke with the owner one year and he says he keeps the maze up all year and works on it during his free time. Every Halloween there will be hours up and a line tio walk through the alienesque pig slaughter maze. Crazy creepy but so professional. They are accommodating for younger and older people. They work off of donations only. It’s a blast.
A must see during October!

This is an amazing home haunt. It isn’t jam packed with live characters around every corner, so when you least expect it one can really make you jump. :-) This is one of the most visually appealing and interesting home haunts I’ve seen. It isn’t as strongly story based as some, but I almost pulled my neck looking around trying not to miss anything. I highly recommend it. Also it’s a home haunt so be quiet and respectful of the neighbors and bring cash for a donation if possible.

Hubby’s first Halloween and haunted house. Definitely worth it and way scarier than some of the other local Halloween experiences. Donations should be left for this impressive homemade haunted house.

I don’t get scared that easily (due to being hyperaware of my surrounding and unable to convince my neurotic self to acknowledge that «yes it is fake but just enjoy the fakeness») and while this maze didn’t really unnerve me, I still have to give it 5 stars due to the love letter that the homeowners had written to Halloween. It may be a less than 5 minute walkthrough, but you can see the dedication and attention to detail that made the 30 minute wait worthwhile.
I think this place is definitely more fun with a bigger group + a few people who scare easily (a screamer!). Bring your camera: the production value is very high (makes you question how they cram all this in their backyard) and you may catch a few roaming actors wandering around while waiting in line. If you get claustrophobic easily, this maze is not for you.
They open only for a few weekends in October + on Halloween. Be sure to visit their facebook page for the latest updates + hours. To avoid a wait, I recommend coming earlier (time + weekend wise). As it gets closer to Halloween, the lines get longer and longer. It is a residential street so parking isn’t too bad. Be respectful of your surroundings so this lovely family can continue this tradition!
