The Studio Shop

I brought in two vintage TWA posters to be framed. I had a very specific vision for how I wanted them framed and The Studio Shop exceeded my expectations. Julie handled my order from beginning to end, and was very pleasant, knowledgeable, and personable. I will definitely be giving all my future framing business to this shop as well as recommending to friends, family and clients. 5+ stars!

For close to ten years I have relied on The Studio Shop to handle important framing jobs for me and for my company. These have included portraits of senior leadership and historical photos and artifacts for display that had to be mounted in ways that also met the highest curatorial and preservation standards. Kristen and Janet Benson have always been the most delightful and professional folks to work with– offering expertise as well as warmth and enthusiasm every time. I also admire their love of art and the creativity with which they approach every job.
While my primary focus has been on critical framing jobs, I am always impressed by the works they have displayed in their gallery and the way they manage to uncover amazing local artists and works by internationally renowned artists, through a network of connections built over decades.
The Studio Shop just celebrated its 100^th anniversary this year. It is a testament to the commitment of the family and to their long lasting engagement in the art world that they have not only endured but have thrived for a century. I hope for at least another century of success and leadership ahead!

I’ve been a customer at both The Studio Shop and The Studio Shop Annex and I won’t go anywhere else for frames. The staff have an excellent eye and consistently find interesting and beautiful frames for very different pieces of art. At the Annex, I’ve had at least a dozen family photos framed — each one unique but they fit together as a whole collection. Their newly expanded art gallery is excellent.

Experts at what they do, and its a pleasure to work with them. You get what you pay for, and they are a little expensive but it’s still excellent value.

After a few years, I went to switch out the art in one of my frames from the Studio Shop and realized they dry mounted all of my limited edition, numbered prints. I’m very disappointed that they did this without asking me — they should have known better.

Just from the outside you can tell that this shop does quality work. It looks like an art store until you actually walk to the back and see the available frames. Julie was helpful and very kind. She will give you many options and give you recommendations.

The Studio Shop is a wonderful place to purchase beautiful art and framing. Kristen and Janet are two amazing sisters that own and run the gallery. They have equisite taste and style. Their collection of local artists is impressive. They will bring art to your home and help you curate your own collection with a keen eye. They will even help you install your work. In addition, they are dedicated to the local community and sponsor many school and other events so you can feel good about how much they give back to the community. I would strongly recommend them to anyone looking to purchase or frame art!

The Studio Shop has the most amazing selection, by far, of frames I’ve ever seen, anywhere, in so many different styles. That by itself isn’t what makes them so good though — it’s that they have years of experience and finely tuned taste to help pick which frame to go with which piece of art. It’s amazing how much the frame can change, enhance, complete, and accentuate what’s inside it. I had no idea, and am thrilled with the suggestions they made (after listening carefully to my preferences). I never would have picked the frames I ended up with, and am so happy that they suggested them. I’ve now had six things framed, all impeccably done, including a wonderful painting (canvas) I purchased in the studio. I can’t say enough good things about the Studio Shop.

I love to frequent local, family run businesses, so I am thrilled to have found The Studio Shop.
Just back from 12 years in France, I had several paintings that needed to be framed, as well as, some memorabilla that I wanted to see everyday as a reminder of the pleasures of France. Five projects in all.
Framing is an art, and everyone who helped me with my projects knew how to bring out the best in each painting, without going over my budget. I was so happy with the results of the paintings, I returned with a signed menu from a very memorable evening with good friends, and 3 Champagne cartons from our favorite Champagne houses that we had used to ship books home, and Julie and Kristen helped me turn those unusual items into two beautiful works of art that now hang on my kitchen wall.
Thanks to Kristen, Janet and Julie, our memories of France are alive and well, and beautifully displayed in our home.

I have to say that although I have not used The Studio Shop for my personal needs (just have not had a need) — I can highly recommend Julie to assist you when you visit the shop. I have known Julie for over 20 years, when she used to run her parents art gallery in San Francisco. She grew up in the business of art and how to present works of art, so it is this extensive knowledge that makes her a huge asset to The Studio Shop. She is a professional and can help you pick out the frames, colors, matting, etc. Give her a call or pay her a visit. Call first to make sure she works on the day you want to visit!

We recently had two paintings framed at the Studio Shop. Julie helped us tremendously by suggesting colors and different types of framing. She was wonderful! Both paintings turned out fantastic. Really beautiful! I highly recommend them if you want caring knowledgeable people to guide you through your framing process.

I bought a pretty antique wood frame at a flea market and brought it to The Studio Shop to have a mirror put in. Julie and Janet gave me great advice to use a beveled mirror and have it lightly antiqued so that it looks like it belongs in the frame. It wasn’t a cheap way to go, but it looks fabulous, and I’m sure I’ll enjoy this mirror for many, many years to come. So, it was worth the investment.
This was the first time I’ve used The Studio Shop and I could tell just by the phone conversation I had with Julie and walking into their beautiful space that they have passion for their work and excellent taste. When I was on my way to drop off the frame after work one evening, traffic was heavy and I knew I’d miss closing time. Janet was there and very kindly waited until I arrived! I really appreciated that and I;m happy to support this family-​owned business. I will definitely return with some other framing projects!

Really nice and knowledgeable folks. They take the time to work with you and make solid recommendations about what kind of frame would best suit your artwork. They also did a fantastic job of stretching a painting that had been warped and water-​damaged, restoring it to a like-​new state. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the work. Highly recommended!

Thanks to Groupon, I now have a new favorite place for framing. The Studio Shop is a local, family run business and they do a fabulous job.
We had a piece of artwork that our daughter made sitting around for ages. When Groupon featured a deal for The Studio Shop, I decided to give it a try. They were extremely helpful and knew their craft well. The suggested matting and frame were just what I was looking for. The work was done when they said it would be. The finished product was just beautiful and perfectly accented the artwork. Perhaps most importantly, my daughter loved it and is proud to have it hanging on the wall.
We will definitely use The Studio Shop in the future.

We came here to find a frame for a landscape photo my husband took which he had blown up and put on canvas. We luckily had a Groupon and it was the perfect time to use it. The store is a nice size with a hefty selection of frames for custom framing. Julie was the lady that helped us and she was extremely helpful and gave us great ideas. I also felt she was really knowledgeable about the frames they carried and knew just what would compliment the photo based on the colors and content of the photo itself. Framing never comes cheap, but I’m happy to say that our experience at The Studio Shop was a very pleasurable one!

The Real Deal!
This place is awesome! My wife and I first went here to get our Ketubah framed from our wedding. We were promptly helped by one of the staff who was professional, knowledgeable and had a keen eye. With her help we picked a matting and frame in about 15 min. When we picked it up we were blown away. It looked fantastic! We couldn’t have asked for more. The attention to detail was unquestionable.
About a month later we purchased a modern print from Upper Playground that needed framing. I wasn’t sure if it would be overkill to have it done at the Studio Shop but we went ahead anyway since our last experience worked out so well. This time I went on my own and worked with another of the staff. Again we picked out the frame and matting in about 15 min. It looked like it was going to come out well but when I picked it up yesterday I was totally blown away (again!)! I don’t think this print has ever looked so good, anywhere. We picked the perfect frame and matting for it. It is now hanging above our bed and every time I look at it I can’t get over how clean and just amazing it looks!
5 stars all the way! This place kicks major ass! I don’t think it is possible to be disappointed with work done by The Studio Shop.

My boyfriend and I wanted to frame two calligraphy paintings from Japan, and we came across The Studio Shop through a groupon deal. It was well worth the drive from the city to Burlingame for our custom framing. The woman who assisted us was very friendly and helpful with her advice. She didn’t make us feel pressured to get the high-​end frames, and she offered her honest opinions.
We got our paintings back after two weeks and we were thrilled will the results. The results were flawless, and our paintings look great in the dinning room. I am excited to go back and frame my 1930’s Chinese advertisement posters.

These guys did a tremendous job artistically framing and preserving a priceless old newspaper from 1845. The helped pick out the best frame for the piece (and for my budget), and the focus was always on helping, not selling. 2 weeks later I have a perfectly preserved piece that I no longer have to worry about degrading. They seem to really know their stuff when it comes to preservation. Their selection of art, posters, frames, etc is also pretty cool!

I don’t usually Unilocal, but my experience at the Studio Shop recently warrants some Unilocal points. I have framed a total of 9 rare/​limited addition prints by famed artists such as: Swoon, Evan Hecox, Shepard Fairey, Tomokazu Matsuyama. I have worked with Julie Venosa on both occasion and felt 100% comfortable with her design instincts and handling of my artwork. The customer experience from consultation to the end product is worth every penny. These gals are pros. The Studio Shop delivers high quality framing with a piece of mind. I’ve been having my art framed at The Studio Shop for 20 years. This is the best place between SF and SJ to purchase fine art and to have beautiful, distinctive framing for your art and photography.
The Studio Shop is a family-​owned business that takes good care of its customers, gets to know your taste, and offers skilled advice for framing and art choices. Sisters Janet and Kristen Benson are two of the principals, and I’ve found they have a great eye and are a tremendous help when considering different framing options. They offer as many choices as you can handle and stay neutral, never influencing your decision. The selection of beautiful, often hand-​made and hand-​finished framing materials is incredible. There’s also more simpler styles for those on a budget.
I recently attended the Antiques Roadshow appraisal event in San Jose, and brought a 100-​year old doeskin Stanford flag that was framed some years ago at The Studio Shop. The first thing the collectibles appraiser asked me was, «Did you frame this?» I said yes, and he said, «The framing is beautiful, really lovely, and more valuable than what you framed.» I see this fellow on TV on the Roadshow all the time, and it’s pretty clear he knows good stuff, so at least I walked away knowing my framing job was a treasure!
Whenever I’m in downtown Burlingame I stop in to see the latest art on display. I enjoy the variety of artists represented and obvious quality of workmanship.
