Many nice beers! Crazy lady downstairs did not want us sitting few minutes before that section closed, fine with us… Only wanted beer from the upstairs.

The bratwurst was ok, the ground mustard saved the day. They have the presentation of the waitresses down(she was also very attentive), they just need to work on the food presentation.

I really like IPA’s, but, man, I really got tired of them this past summer. And not just IPA’s but all super heady(pun intended) local craft brews. Sometimes, you just want a good ol’ clean, crisp lager. And by the end of this summer I was ready to session some pilsners/lagers. Well, when it comes to lagers you cannot beat a traditional German lager and the best place(only place?) in town you get them on draft is at Das Bierhaus. Personally, I tend to order anything on draft by Weihenstephaner. For food, always order the pretzel. Soft and warm and goes great with the beer. The rest of the menu has traditional german plates, and I prefer the simple wurst plates. Other highlights: The staff is always super friendly. They seem knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the German style beers. And the biggest highlight must be the rooftop seating. I love all the outside seating that is found in BTV, but Das’ rooftop is quite unique(seems like there should be more rooftop seating in town…)

Wow!!! Amazing German beers on tap!!! You must have the dumplings and a side of potato salad. A little below church st proper but not that far down at all. The homemade red cabbage is awesome. If German beers are not your thing they have heady topper as well.

Wanted a bratwurst so we were very fortunate to find this place! The spahtzel was delish but could do without the onions. Overall food was great, the brat was just what we were looking for. Service was good.

My boyfriend and I visited Burlington for the first time this past weekend and Das Bierhaus was by far our best experience of the entire trip. We stopped by hoping to grab a late lunch and then head out, but ended up staying for SIXHOURS just chatting and joking around with with the bartenders and locals. Key points: 1. Best tap beer selection I’ve seen in all of northern New England, if you like German beer(which you should). Schneider Aventinus! 2. Very chill yet competent staff. They got a rush of customers around mid-afternoon and the two bartenders flawlessly managed the tables while still taking great care of us of us at the bar. 3. The food was simply incredible. We got the cheese pretzel and the schnitz on a stick. Other reviews don’t lie when they say the jäger sauce is something you want to put on EVERYTHING. 4. Overall vibe was very enjoyable. They happily put on a non-local college football game, we never felt rushed, and only left because we had to nap before going out later after getting a bit too tipsy on all the delicious beer offerings(including plenty of Head Topper). We will be going here any time we visit Burlington again. If you don’t stop by while in town, you’re a fool.

Das Bierhaus has two things going for it: 1) Delicious German beer 2) Rooftop drinking Everything else was terrible. And by everything else, I mean the service. I apologize in advance for the oncoming sassiness.(Kinda.) We arrived at Das Bierhaus and the place was fairly empty.(Meanwhile, the rest of Church St. was packed, so perhaps this should’ve been our first clue something just ain’t right here.) We were a big table of ten, but there was a long picnic table on the roof to accommodate us. The waitress was able to find us just two food menus(a ratio of 1 menu per 5 people if you’re keeping track), but then had to «search» for beer menus. I might have to stress this a few times unfortunately, but again, there was hardly anyone there, so I’m not exactly sure where the beer menus had run off to… Anyway, we finally got them, placed our orders, and then waited. And waited and waited and waited. And because I had been looking at the time so damn often, I know for a fact it took 45 minutes before I had my first sip of beer at Das Bierhaus. C’mon. I don’t care how laid-back and chill Vermont is, that’s too damn long. In the meantime, there was a cooler out on the roof filled with cold water, but no cups. When we asked our waitress if she could bring up a few more, she said she was having trouble finding them. Apparently everything is misplaced here — menus, cups, beer even! I understand if you want to give us those plastic cups that you usually serve water in, but if you can’t find them(again, weird and concerning in itself), then maybe you should just give us some empty beer glasses from the behind the bar, I dunno. Unless those are nowhere to be found either, because then that at least follows some sort of twisted logic up in this place. Our waitress was either incompetent, unprepared, or both. She couldn’t have been overwhelmed — again, there was hardly anyone else there. I felt bad for her though. Partially because she looked completely uncomfortable in those German dirndl get-ups they make women wear here, but also because I fear she might be really terrible at fun games like Photo Hunt, Hide and Seek, and Where’s Waldo? And that’s the real tragedy, my friends.

Happened to catch a glimpse of their German flag while driving through Burlington, so we drove around to get parking and walked around the block to get to this haven of German beer, food and culture. A mildly hungry family of four, we walked up two flights of stairs to the roof garden and had a nice lunch on the five wurst sampler platter that came with adequate sauerkraut, both in amount and taste. Also had some fries and wings. Solid beer selection. Too full to try desert. Drawbacks: stairs, smoking on roof garden, limited tables with shade – bring sunscreen. CKA

You NEED to go here. IMO one of the two best restaurants in Burlington(Trattoria Delia being the other). Please, for the love of god, start with a cheese pretzel and a beer. You can thank me later. For entrees, it’s all good. Jaeger schnitzel is my personal favorite(highly recommend extra jäger sauce on the side – that stuff is epic!) but rouladen, mac and cheese, jäger burger, are all also excellent. We often split a meal to attempt to save room for the apple fritter which is totally worth having, even I pin comparison to a stroll to Ben and Jerry’s. It’s basically 3 large, delicious apple donuts, freshly fried, with vanilla ice cream. Service is typically great – last night was a little slow – but I think both Staff were newer. Roof deck is a great time, but good ambiance inside, as well. Clean restrooms(random, maybe, but it’s important!) and friendly staff make for a really nice night out, or a great stop for a mid-day snack.

I mean, I’m not NOT going to go to a place called Das Bierhaus. That means«The Beer House,» right? I like beer. And houses. Fuck yeah. Came here on a Saturday night and it wasn’t too crowded. We were seated immediately on the roof in the«biergarten.» We got a pretty good spot right near the edge of the building, though I gotta say some of the spots seem very poorly lit in the back. Which I guess is pretty solid if you’re looking to give each other handjobs or whatever. I ordered some bauernwurst, which is both a spicy and smoked wurst. I was really impressed. I also had a couple of sides — the kasespatzle and the potato salad. The kasespatzle was excellent. It’s like a weird Germany macraoni and cheese. I was really impressed. The potato salad on the other hand… eh. I mean, I get that it’s a German take on the dish, so it’s got more of a sauerkraut thing going on, but eh… it did nothing for me. I didn’t even finish it. And I was drinking. The beer menu was excellent and I tried a few. The service was also very good. She was attentive without being pushy. I would definitely recommend this place for anybody who wants to check out some awesome German food. But I’d pass on the potato salad. Especially if you like regular ol’ American-style potato salad, cause that shit is not that at all.

We popped in on Trivia Night! They made a great effort to make this an authentic German restaurant. Great German menu, beer selection and style. We had 7 in the party, so we tried a little of everything. You won’t be disappointed. Definitely get the pretzel! PS We lucked out and went on Trivia Night. My party killed it. Went home with some trivia prizes!

There are a couple styles of German restaurants. One is the beer garden(or here, biergarten), which is popularized by a bunch of beer, and it really has little to do with German culture, other than a bunch of beer — and not much in the way of garden, as far as an outdoor natural area, if that’s your thinking. We did visit in the colder part of the year — though to be fair, I’m not sure when the warm time of year happens in Vermont — so you might be able to find a rooftop patio or something at other times. With that in mind, there are some German, or at least Bavarian, specialities on the menu, and they purport to be made with local ingredients. Now it seems we all like to eat farm-to-table and whatnot, but really: Do we know? I generally don’t, because we don’t see the farming done, and the slaughtering done, so it’s just a matter of how the menu is prepared. This isn’t to slight Das Bierhaus, it’s just to say that it could very well be a marketing thing, because we really don’t know for certain. The items on the menu were definitely interesting, but mostly unsurprising — pretzels, sausages, etc. Tasty, and they go well with beer(or bier, if you prefer), but ultimately the issue here is service. It’s on the slow side, and since you are essentially in a bar, it’s not a huge deal if your food is slow — but the drinks should be able to keep up, and they really don’t. So if you really must have German food, check it out. Oh, the other style of German restaurant? That’s the kind with the one man band singing German drinking songs. Those are fun too, but alas, this isn’t one of those.

Yay! This place was a great find! We were hungry at a very odd mid– to late-afternoon hour and weren’t sure where to go. Unilocal recommended this choice. We don’t really frequent bars since we don’t drink much, but I was intrigued by the German aspect. First, the local cider we ordered here(Citizen Cider: bourbon barrel aged cider) is good enough that it could make me need a twelve step program. I’m sorta glad it seems hard to acquire in Boston. It was delightfully refreshing and so light it was almost like a wine, not beery at all. Sorry, I know this is totally uncool to say in this age of microbrewing and girl power, but I hate the taste of beer.(And not because it’s by the people and for the people, I’m all for that.) Our server was delightfully friendly. I liked her a lot. Our selection of food was great. We sort of ordered small plates with a ham and cheese pretzel, bratwurst, and Käsespätzle(noodles with swiss, gruyère, cheddar, and romano cheeses, and onion). Our pretzel was massive and layered with ham and cheese(for some reason not what I pictured) and very good. The bratwurst was good(it comes with two links) although it didn’t blow me away. And the Käsespätzle was good too with subtle flavors and a creamy texture. It made for a perfect late lunch especially with our yummy cider.

A fun, pretty authentic German beer hall in downtown Burlington. The beer selection is awesome, including some typical German beer and some more obscure, delicious ones. The Aventinus was delicious but I didn’t realize it was something like 12% until later. The food was also very good and fairly authentic. The currywurst was excellent and tasted just like the Berlin version. The jagerschnitzel was also good and the sauce was excellent. Service was very friendly and actually German!

I am going out on a limb giving this place 3 stars. Our experience there certainly warranted a two star review. But I liked my food, so I’m going to go with a three star. The good, even on a Friday night, we were able to get seated quickly. And the food was pretty good. The bad? Everything else. Most of it due to our waitress. I’m going to assume she’s actually really competent and was just having an off day, and would be happy to bump this up to a 4 star review if I go back and the service is better. First off, the lighting outside? Non existant. It was dark when we got there, and we were all using our phones for lighting to read the menu. That’s something that definitely needs to be addressed. Especially for people like me who barely can see in the dark… Anyways. After we were seated it wasn’t long before we were asked about our beer. Our waitress looked at our IDs(all from different states), and ran off to get our orders. Which took… well next to forever. Then she wanted to see the ID from Rhode Island again«just to be sure she didn’t make a mistake». Okay. I guess… Then we wanted to order food, and she was unaware of if the kitchen was even open(which it was open for nearly another hour at this point) Then she brought one of us the wrong size of beer. Then she brought out the wrong food.(Though she was kind enough to nix the dish that was wrong off the bill). She also spilled other people’s beer and just put it on the table anyways. She seemed only marginally apologetic for all the mishaps. I wouldn’t have felt so bad if she owned up her mistakes and said«Oh, well it’s been a long day», or «I’ve simplely spaced out» even. I know most service people work their asses off, and at least to the customer put on a great show of «caring about their job». A little of this would have went a long way.

Terrible service. My office went here for a team lunch on a week day and it took 2 hours to get our food. Maybe this would be acceptable if they were slammed, but he were the first people in the restaurant that day. We even got a parking ticket because it took forever and two people left before the food even came to go back for meetings. The waitress offered no apology despite our complaints and just shimmied her boobs around innocently. The food is fine, if you don’t mind the small portions. Personally not going back, ever.

Met up for dinner with an old friend, Amanda. The place was dead when we showed up for dinner on a Tuesday night at 6pm, but we were not deterred. A nice round of german beers(and a hard cider for me) to start the meal, along with appetizers of Schnitz on a Stick and Kasespatzle were perfect for sharing, and damn tasty. For entrees, we all had the schnitzel – how could you not? I had the Wiener Schnitzel, which was a big portion, nicely breaded with a light lemon caper flavor. The side of grilled asparagus was fantastic and much better than expected. Tom had the Schnitzel vom Schwein, complete with the runny egg on top and a side of spicy fries – get this, they were actually spicy! Amanda had the Jäger«Hunter» Schnitzel – she also had the egg on top and she mentioned that the mushroom gravy was delish. Perfect place to eat, drink and catch up on old times. Here’s to the next one!

I have been here twice in one day. I feel that says enough about a restaurant, but I’ll review it anyway. I came here for the first time last February, right after they had just opened. The second floor bar area was all they had open, and it served its purpose as a sanctuary from the Vermont cold. Maybe I’m just a nerd, but check out the monitor behind the bar. It’s pretty. Das Bierhaus serves Austrian, Swiss, and German food, with German beers on tap. They get their ingredients from local sources. You’re in Vermont, get the cheese platter. When I came here last summer, they had the roof, first and second floor, and an area in the front all open and packed with people. We split the cheese plate, and I got the Yager Schnitzel with a side of sauerkraut. All were excellent, but made my buddy decide he’s bringing his own tent next time. I just came here again a couple weeks ago. When we showed up about fifteen minutes before opening, there was already a line of people waiting to get in. We enjoyed a few beers, and I have no complaints about the cleanliness of the taplines or the quality of service. We returned later in the afternoon for a few more beers, and made our way up to the roof. It’s a nice, shaded area where you can enjoy the weather. All of us tried the pretzels this time. When asked how we wanted them, one of the guys at the table next to us proclaimed«Cheese! Get the cheese.» So, we got the cheese. It’s a big, soft pretzel with cheese melted all over it. Really, you can’t go wrong there. I’ve been to Das Bierhaus four or five times now, and I’m always pleased. It has become a must-stop when I go up to Burlington. Get into it.

Das war köstlich! We had a great time at Das Bierhaus tonight. It was a nice change from the typical food found on Church street and the service was top notch. The theme is authentic German food and the waitresses even dress in traditional dirndls. The menu has a variety of portion sizes to fit your appetite. The soft Bavarian pretzels was a great starter. You can choose from: traditional, cheese, chocolate, and cinnamon; you also get a trio of dipping sauces: honey, spicy mustard, and cheese. My favorite combination was the traditional with the spicy mustard. For entrees, I tried the Jäger«Hunter» schnitzel with sauerkraut and the best wurst sausage combination. My previous experiences with schnitzel have all turned up soggy and overdone, but this pounded pork loin was perfectly pan-fried and crispy throughout. The mushroom gravy was too salty so the Schnitzel vom Schwei probably would have been a better choice. The sausages all tasted too similar for me to appreciate their subtle differences. The big winner was the curry sauce that came with it. I completely agree that it’s «better than the Indian food available.» Of course, no German meal would be complete without an authentic draft. If you love Hefeweizens as much as I do, the Weihenstephan Hefeweis is a must-try.
