I got a four-pack of lessons with a dreaded Groupon so I could brush up on some guitar fundamentals that I don’t get with my current lessons, which is more like me bringing in a song I want to learn, and my current teacher transcribing it in a way my lameass fingers can understand. Lydia, my Real School instructor, was fabulous. She was totally cool with knowing I was cheating on my current teacher with her. She was patient, she provided great printouts of scales, warm-ups and stuff, and was really encouraging and filled in a lot of blanks in my musical education. Don’t let the semester payment plan thing scare you off. Lydia told me they’re very flexible: you can drop in as needed, come once a month, call for last-minute appointments, etc. If Burlington was more convenient to me, I would totally do this often. The main clientele are kids, so the 80s-esque neon décor might strike the adults as cheesy. And the studios aren’t soundproofed too well, so when you’re waiting for your lesson, you can really hear the 13-year-olds who play better than you do and hang out with their parents who are probably wishing earplugs came with their kids’ tuition.
