I guess we stopped on an off day, the chef apparently is not well, and I wish him a sincere prayer of wellness. That being said, the small chocolate assortment available(two plates with 5ish pieces each) offered what I thought was expresso chocolates and an apricot version. I purchased the expresso($ 12.99 for 4 one-bite chocolates) which turned out to be cherry flavored, and not of good taste at all. It was a floury paste covered in bitter chocolate. My husband did not like them, and my chocoholic daughter passed too. I ended up throwing them away. A waste of $ 13.00 better spent at many great chocolatiers in Houston, or even a box of Godiva from Target. I’m sure this isn’t normal, according to the great reviews, but I likely won’t try again. Best wishes to the chef and kind young lady at the counter.

Oh this adorable place! Amazing, hand made chocolates and the best French Onion soup. So much character and incredibly kind hosts. They were excellent and tolerant of our 3 young children. What a special treat of a stop! We’ll be back for the dinner.

This quaint little chocolate shop in this little town in between College Station and Waco is without a doubt the best chocolate shop in Texas! Seriously, if you haven’t tried it before, it is worth the drive. The chocolates are amazing, and cost just about the same as any other boutique chocolate shop you get in the big city, but I guarantee that his chocolates are better than any I have had in the US. This guy knows his craft. The hot chocolate alone is amazing and an experience in and of itself. Shoot, it is like in a different class than even Theo’s hot chocolate in Seattle, and that one is pretty good, too. The owner is such a nice guy, and his chocolates are amazing. If he had his shop in DFW or Houston, I guarantee he would beat out any chocolate shop in the area. If you haven’t tried Cocoamoda before, you should drive up and try it on a free weekend. Amazing! I would order his hot chocolate shipped if I could, but I will just stick with ordering the chocolates. :)

Excellent everything, coffee, chocolate, service. Can’t ask for more. The owner is ridiculously friendly and tells a great story. Do yourself a favor and stop here. You won’t regret it.

Cocomoda is lovely little pit stop on the road from Dallas to Houston. It’s an unexpectedly upscale shop with gourmet chocolates and the best hazelnut lattes. The owner is very animated and fun to have a chat with as well.

This was a jewel — great discovery in the middle of nowhere! Loved the jalapeño Rosemary truffle. The passion fruit and key lime were divine. And the owners just great.

A completely magical experience! I had heard lovely things and been really wanting to visit cocaomoda for a while. My husband took me for a surprise road trip and I was so happy when we arrived here, but I have to say it exceeded any and all expectations I had. The chocolate was die for and chef Ken was so entertaining, welcoming and an incredible host. We are cherishing the chocolates we brought back, they are unrivaled to any I’ve ever had. It’s definitely a trip worth making. Next time we plan to stay longer and enjoy one of his 6 course meals. Can’t wait!

Cocoamoda was featured recently on «Restaurant Impossible», one of those shows that I can easily watch in marathon fashion! Their episode was one of the better ones, and I thought it was cool that they would feature a restaurant in the small town of Calvert, TX. Anyhoo, we were in route yesterday evening from Katy, TX home to Keller and as we entered Calvert I remembered the episode. Of course, we had to stop in, and coincidentally, it was 6:50PM — perfect timing for dinner! Unfortunately for us, Cocoamoda is «reservations only» on Saturday night, and possibly other nights, too. The restaurant was beautifully set up for the evening’s patrons and I really wished I could have been one of them. Although we couldn’t have dinner, we did purchase a variety of homemade chocolates, each of which was absolutely divine. Why four stars? I’m saving the fifth for that dinner review. We will make a reservation, and we will partake!

Had a great anniversary dinner at Cocoamoda. There are plenty of small town restaurants in the area to get a chicken fried steak or an enchilada plate, but if your looking for a special night out and you are near Calvert, this is the place to be. It was a very relaxed, enjoyable, dining experience. Chef Ken did a great job with his presentations providing a great variety of tastes and textures. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Looking forward to a return visit!

Cocoamoda is fantastic!!! I stopped by because my friend heard great things about the chocolates on tv and boy was she right! At first the chocolate display looked really simple in comparison to other places I’ve been to but the taste made up for it. We were greeted by who I believe was Mrs. Wilkinson and she was very sweet, explained all the different flavors and was even able to convince us into trying their usual crowd pleasers that were definitely out of the box flavors. I tried the«Inspiration» which had a white chocolate shell brushed with 24K gold and had a rose petal infused ganache and it was as an incredible of a taste as it sounds! You really have to taste them to be able the understand the names of the chocolates and the flavors they’re described to be. We also tried the passion fruit, lavender and bourbon chocolates and they were great too but if I had to choose a favorite I would pick the Inspiration again and again, I could eat a whole box! They also serve French cuisine for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays with a specific menu cultivated by the chef that I have yet to try so I will be back again, with more friends! This place is truly a hidden gem.

Finally time to get to my tasting notes and get down to a fun review of the food. Valentine’s Dinner 2013.(Reviewing stuff on Unilocal can get boring some of the time, so this is right up my alley of late, some very unique and awesome food); 1st Course; SOUPEDOIGNON A LAFRANCAISECLASSIQUE(The Classic Cheese and Croûton Topped French Onion Soup) PHOTO:
We arrived 10 minutes late which is 5 minutes early in rural Texas. Chef Ken hugged us(we go back to when they open), apologized for the presentation of the soup as it was splashed well on the bowl. We got the joke when we tasted it as it was so delux that we ended up scraping the onions off the plates. Lots of butter. Really nice invite to settling a serious hunger. We actually caught the trick of Chef Ken where the so called«croûton» was a hand made delicacy with a firm internal bread that had breading on the two sides that melted differently thus making the dish complex in a funny way, while you waited for the next dish. We finished every drop with soup spoons. 2nd Course; ESCARGOTPOCHESDANSUNECOUVERTURE(Escargot with Garlic and Fresh Herbs Encased in Jalapeño Saffron Brioche served with Sweet Blackberry Orange Couli (PHOTO) Snails. Yep snails. Being a Californian when someone says that your tastes change every 7 years I call that out as bullshit. I have loved shrimp and clams every day of my life and always will. I have tried Escargot in New York and Chicago, maybe in Tokyo(LOL) and these were awesome. Regardless of what the menu says I say that they were very fresh snails in a jalapeño cheese bread pouch with real Spanish Saffron. The saffron brought all the tastes of France and Texas together like a bow tie. I actually was able to catch Chef Ken by grabbing his arm and asked about that and he stated that he used raw Spanish Saffron that had never been diluted. Killer dish! 3rd Course; BEURRESAUTESFILETDECABILLAUD A LORGE. AVECDELASAUCEABRICOT Butter Sauteed filet of cod on a bead of poached barley with Burned Apricot Sauce (PHOTO) United States, welcome to sweet fish. When we tasted it my wife from Japan informed me that there is a trend of fish with sweet sauce. Apparently no one else has the balls. Getting tired. Will review and share photos of the next dishes as well when I have time.

CocoaModa is a necessary stop between the drive from College Station to Dallas. The chocolate truffles are heavenly. A few that we always get: Lavender(unbelievably good), Mint, Key lime, and Espresso The truffles are not cheap, so we always make sure to savor them very slowly. Nothing more pleasant than one of these little delights melting away in your mouth.
