I come here a lot because of its location. When they have food, it’s usually pretty decent, but they’re always out of breakfast food by 10am. I know 10am is late for breakfast… but we’re at MIT, where most people stay up until 4am and wake up at 11. They should have breakfast at least until they start serving lunch at 11:30. 90% of their breakfast food is brought in from some third party company. They don’t make anything themselves, so when they run out, they run out. There are also very few outlets in the seating area… I think there are two in the corner, and that’s it. We’re at MIT, remember? Where everyone is working on their laptops 24÷7… The staff is very friendly, but not very attentive. They are usually having conversations amongst themselves and don’t realize when there are customers lined up at the cash register. Koche has a lot of great potential, they just need to get their act together and start making more food themselves! I also wish they hadn’t switched from Peet’s to Starbucks…

OK, so it’s probably not fair to review the Koch Café yet, since they’re clearly just getting going and haven’t even set everything up yet. I was psyched to try them when I saw that they were(sorta) open, though, because they offer Peets Coffee, and if the brewing is at least as inconsistently mediocre as the Peets at Bosworth’s(Lobby 7), then it would be a major step up from the Starbucks at the Forbes Café(Stata). I grabbed a cup of house blend, which seemed to be pretty fresh(I had seen them carry out the urn a couple minutes earlier). The verdict: not terrible, about equally to Bosworths in mediocrity. Hooray? (It remains to be seen how it is, efficiency-wise– it’s a small and possibly somewhat crowded space, with one check-out system for both coffee and lunch items, a la Sebastians…)
