The site of MIT’s new Building 76, the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, was previously a parking lot, so it is a welcome addition to the surrounding streetscape. It’s prominent location at the corner of Main and Vassar Streets also helps to hide the uncomfortable aesthetics of the neighboring Stata Center.
A noticeable decorative feature of the new building is the glass enclosed staircase on the Vassar Street façade. Building 76 is connected underground to Building 32 (Stata Center) and uses it’s same entrance to access subterranean parking and loading docks.
Building 76 is just starting to be occupied, so time will tell as to it’s successful utilization, but so far it looks encouraging.
