Mixed bag. Needle roll and spring roll appetizer were both top notch and worth returning for. Hot rock salmon was a fun twist on a standard. But … Edamame was over-cooked(microwaved?), vegetable tempura used a heavy, too-crispy batter, and service was a bit too aloof.

We were looking forward to dinner at Fishes having experienced this restaurant last year and loving the sushi while on vacation. Last year you had to make reservations to get a table. This year we walked in and there were only two tables with people in them and half of the restaurant was empty… empty as in no tables or chairs, weird. The host asked us how many and had to see if there was availability, really there are lots of empty tables. Long story short, the waitress was indifferent, didn’t introduce herself, welcome us to the restaurant, etc. The sushi was mostly rice, the chef wandered around looking lost. A table of 5 came in while we were finishing and they were seated in a small table, smashed together, again there were lots of empty tables. Its sad when a formerly good restaurant goes downhill this way. Needless to say we will not be going back.

The first time I ate here the sushi was ok, I went back again because I love/crave sushi & this is the only option in CB. I will not make that mistake again. I placed a to-go order of 3 sushi rolls(spider, yellowtail & needles) & spring rolls. I actually spit out the piece of spider roll I ate because I was worried it would make me sick. All the rolls tasted fishy… which is even harder to accept when you’re looking at the ocean while eating it. $ 50 of sushi went straight to the trash. I can say the service in ordering it was very good, even called to let me know my order was ready. It’s really too bad the food was so awful. It’s tough to get over bad sushi.

The food was amazing, small portions with moderate prices. But very good. Try the pearl sake!

My amazing boyfriend brought me here for my Birthday. Even made reservations. We walked in and we were the only ones on the book! Ok we knew its a ghost town in Dec around there but wow! We ordered and everything we had fish wise was fishy! We immediately lost our appetites! Even the edamamme was WAY over steamed! We had a couple beers and left after about 35 min and went to Driftwood steak house. Best place in town! Sorry guys. But we should have known better then to eat a sushi bar that’s only open 2 days a week during the winter. Cause why would they order top sushi grade? :-/

Terrific lunch while exploring cannon beach during the stormy weather arts festival. Service and food were excellent! Already planning our next visit! Highly recommend!

I came here this evening with my girlfriend after spending the afternoon out in Cannon Beach. We wanted to look for something to eat but couldn’t decide where to go. We walked around all over downtown Cannon Beach but every restaurant menu we looked at didn’t not seem to appeal to our appetite. We walked by Fishes Sushi and at first I was a bit reluctant on coming in but at the point we were at we were running out of restaurants to look at. We took the risk and I believe our gamble turned out well. Atmosphere here is a very inviting feeling. The colors are soothing and warm. The tables inside here seem a little bit on the awkward side for me which seem a little bit on the short side for me at least. Our server this evening was very friendly she showed us the menu and quickly returned with our drinks. This evening we ordered the: Quail Egg Sushi California Roll Spider Roll Tempura Needles Roll Sea Food Noodle soup We receive the Quail Egg Sushi first which was on the special today. It consisted of a raw quail egg yolk over salmon eggs wrapped in seaweed and filled with rice on the inside of the seaweed. I wasn’t quite sure if I really enjoyed it or not. I love raw quail egg yolk like on the steak tartar they serve at Beast but it was definitely not quite the same. Quite a bit of crunchiness from the salmon eggs but with the slimy texture of the egg yolk I just didn’t feel it worked too well together. After finishing off the bite sized morsel we received the noodle soup next. Bowl was very amply loaded with soba noodles which were overcooked. The broth was very good and flavorful but when it came down to the main ingredient the seafood I found was overcooked as well and rock hard. The veggies that came in the soup complimented the soup well. If I was making the soup I would advise serving the seafood raw and having it cooked into the soup so they would have been at the correct range once served. Up next after that was the spider roll. You can definitely tell the soft shell crab was fresh. Pretty standard Spider Roll it just didn’t stand out for me but it was good nonetheless. After that we received the Tempura Needles Roll. This took the show! I don’t know how to explain it but everything was just perfect. Its a seaweed wrapped roll with Crab, Shrimp, Salmon, Avocado & Spicy Mayo that is lightly floured and fried to perfection. The seaweed was crunchy and with the spicy mayo was like a little piece of heaven. Now what made the dish perfect was the seaweed salad that accompanied it. I was in love with it and almost tempted to ask for an extra order of it cause it was that good. Lastly, we had the California roll and once again you can definitely tell the seafood is fresh but it really didn’t stand out above the crowd. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience here. The menu is a bit lacking on the sushi side but there was enough there to find something I could definitely enjoy. Due to the lack of selection on sushi and the jaw dropping cost of chicken teriyaki($ 18) I can’t give it five stars. I would definitely give it four without a doubt and more than likely come back when I am in town next time. Whoever said you can’t find good sushi in a small town should come here and give it a try once. The service is outstanding here and food is definitely worth coming back for. Happy Eating Everyone!

Service was very slow. Waited more than 40 mins before anything was served. Food was ok. Nothing too special. Ask one of the girl for wasabi, she acknowledge it but did not bring anything. Need to speed up !

The food wasn’t bad, but we paid $ 53 for three appetizer-sized menu items. The rolls were good, but the value is poor. I’ve paid way less for much better sushi in the city.

Reservations recommended! Ours were for 6:30 and by 7:00 the restaurant was full. Overall, the food was very good. The salmon rolls and miso soup were quite good, tempura vegetables and the tempura zucchini were excellent. We ordered the summer rolls and they were not good — cold and rather flavorless. The service was good and the atmosphere was calming. A good change from the traditional seafood of the coast.

Had an excellent meal here during a nice weekend vacation with my girlfriend. The service was extremely courteous and attentive from the moment we walked in the door. We sat right at the sushi bar to get a little show with our meal — it was great! The sushi itself was terrific — fresh ingredients, innovative plating, and we even got a lesson on the process with our meal. I would definitely recommend Fishes for anyone in the Cannon Beach area; I know we’ll be back!

I was so happy to see a sushi restaurant finally in Cannon Beach. We did have a good meal though it was pretty pricey. Their rolls are ridiculously huge — like difficult to eat huge. Miso soup with lobster… pretty fab. Their sashimi was amazing.

I guess we walked into this place after its lunch service was already over and we were being told to come back at 5pm for dinner. As we were walking out the door the chef told us to stay and it was fine. I was relieved since ive been wanting to try this place for 2 days. We ordered the tempura noodle roll and the california dungeness roll. Both were excellent! I highly suggest the tempura noodle roll, its served hot but super fresh, you can taste every ingredient. Service was excellent. Will be returning here again.

A nice little place with a quiet atmosphere. We walked around town looking for a place to eat and couldn’t really decide on what we wanted. We stumbled upon this place and thought«why not»? We had a toddler and the staff was very understanding and accommodating. I only ordered the unagi and lobster miso soup. The unagi was tasty but it wasn’t made very well. The rice was too loose. It fell apart when I picked it up with my chopsticks. My husband had the chicken teriyaki and it was very good. My son loved the lobster miso. It had a nice depth of flavor. I mixed it with his rice and he ate it up! We ended dinner with a yummy ginger crème brûlée.

Sushi is a great idea for Canon Beach, but they need a professional sushi chef. There was so much salt on our edamame they were white! The sake was luke warm, and after asking for sushi for our kidos with no wasabi we were served 8 orders of fish covered in green. Hey thanks for trying to correct the bad meal by comping the kids 3 sodas… don’t go out of your way next time… we wont be back, sad…

Although the selection of fresh fish was limited, the quality was very good. The shrimp tempura we ordered was skimpy as they did not use the larger shrimp filets you usually see in Japanese restaurants. All in all, a decent addition to CB dining options but not worth a special trip down.

This is a place you should run away from. I am a Sushi lover but Fishes leaves a lot to be desired. On a Friday night it was half empty, should of seen the writing on the wall. The sunomono– cucumbers cut to thick, too much oil and not enough vinegar, Miso soup — good flavor but was luke warm Chirachi — glob of rice surrounded with a few pieces of fish. Super tiny portion. In most restaurants for the same price this dish is a main course and you need nothing else. We left hungry and went to the pizzaria across the stree for a slice.

This rating is generously adjusted for North Oregon Coast fare(it’s not fair to compare this restaurant with top innovative sushi restaurant in New York, for instance). The Oregon Coast is not known for having(good) sushi, and it’s a niche that is in desperate need of filling! Overall, I had a very good experience and was pleasantly surprised by this new Cannon Beach sushi joint. The restaurant is clean and airy, and the décor is casual and well done. The service was good and efficient. The cucumber in the ice water was a nice touch(and they did a good job of keeping my water full throughout the meal). There was a nice selection of cold sake. The seaweed salad was perhaps the best I had ever had! – a perfectly spicy salad with a fantastic combination of flavors. The tuna sashimi had nice flavor, but the integrity was not ideal as it was a bit mushy(problem of lean fish that has been poorly frozen/thawed). I look forward to learning more about where they source their sushi-grade fish. Their sorbet and ice cream is made in house. The green tea ice cream was fantastic, and perfectly paired with a couple of almond sugar sesame seeds cookies. Yum. Would have liked to have had restaurant-quality chopsticks instead of the very cheap disposable variety that is typically used only for take out. The only thing that seriously disappointed was the edamame, which was dry and they used iodized table salt on it(!?) when they should use a course salt like kosher or sea salt. They did well for having recently opened, and I expect that they will grow and improve. I hope they continue to keep a simple menu and focus on doing a few things really well, and also allowing them to keep the freshest, best quality fish possible.

Great addition to Cannon Beach restaurant options! The restaurant has a crisp, clean, inviting atmosphere, with a range to welcome all-comers; slightly elegant, casual and just off the beach, father-daughter, whatever, it works. The sushi is good, but on our first visit, I have to say that the sides showed exceptional attention to detail. The seaweed salad had a spicy bite, the miso soup was hearty. All excellent and well-priced too. Service was extremely pleasant, friendly and attentive. A winner!

Jonathan and Jason at the helm of the sushi bar means you can expect innovative sushi rolls made with fresh fish –most of them from local waters. We were at Fishes Sushi on their third day of business. Service was exceptional with a small-town friendly flair. We were greeted with a bowl of edamame upon being seated. Basic rolls were on the menu along with traditional Japanese entrees. Not to worry, sushi chefs were open and willing to create rolls of art upon request. Rumor has it they are planning on incorporating seasonal rolls to the menu. Hamachi sashimi was superb. Soft shell crab roll to die for. Special order deep fried eel roll was out of this world. Sake bombs enhanced our experience. We ate so much sushi we didn’t have room for sake sorbet, Ginger crème brûlée or green tea ice cream. Maybe next time.
