If you drive far enough out of Minneapolis, you might find yourself in Cannon Falls. If you’re in Cannon Falls, you might stay at the Quill and Quilt. You should. I took my boy with me to the bed and breakfast after finding a deal for the Quill and Quilt on Crowdcut. It was his birthday, and this was his birthday surprise. We barely made it to the 8PM check-in, but it was worth the rush. Nestled in a 100+ year old house that screams colonial revival and decorated in Victorian chic, the Quill and Quilt has themed rooms. We stayed in the Writer’s Loft on the third floor. Half the room is an immense and captivating bathroom, with jacuzzi and a shower with a most curious arrangement of shower heads(two from opposite sides!). The house is beautiful, if a bit overwhelming, but the room was cozy and grand at once. Breakfast(which after the Bed is the reason one visits B&Bs) was rather nice, with a local blueberry sausage, a simply egg quiche and parfait. Nothing truly remarkable, but you won’t starve and you’ll probably enjoy it. It was, as we say in Minnesota, very nice. Part of the appeal of a B&B is the people. It’s not a hotel, and breakfast is a communal affair. Over our scones and sautéed sausage, we met a doctor and his wife out biking, another couple who sold real-estate celebrating an anniversary and yet a third couple whom I don’t remember much about. They were all lovely, though, and if any of them read this review, hello! The town of Cannon Falls seems to have struggled through the death of small town America. It’s got a few decent places to eat(we stopped at the only one still open at 10pm, a bar and grill), a few small shops, and a growing winery, courtesy of the University of Minnesota’s invention of wine grapes you can grow up here in the frigged winter. If you can get yourself out of the bath long enough to take a look, a walk around Cannon Falls is very pleasant.
