Having lived in Italy and travelled there often we recognize good Italian food when we taste it. Giovanni’s cooking is the real thing… all made fresh and authentically Italian. We no longer bother to order from the menu but instead ask Giovanni to bring us anything he wants to make. Never disappointed, sometimes delightfully surprised with the things he comes up with. This location is a very humble café but the food that comes out of that tiny kitchen is truly amazing. Not your standard American-Italian restaurant. We followed Giovanni from his previous restaurant on Water Street and when he moves back to Italy we may have to follow him there, too.

Stopped by this cute Capitola café for a warm drink on a cold, rainy day. It’s a tiny little place, and the proprietor(a friendly Italian man with a great accent) seemed to be the only person working there. I got a chai, and my friends got a hot chocolate and a latte, and all of us were pleased. The desserts they had displayed looked very tasty — tiramisu, some tortes, some cookies — and it looked like they also had baked pasta dishes. No negatives that I can think of.

While on our weekened in Capitola, we were walking to the beach trying to find a place to stop in for coffee and a little breakfast. We stumbled upon this place, and went in. There were only a few other people in the place, but there was also only one person working there. So service was very slow. I ordered a regular mocha, which was served luke warm, rather than piping hot. My wife ordered a hot chocolate and a bacon, egg, and cheese melt thing. The hot chocolate also arrived luke warm. They had run out of most of the rolls and breads that they would serve the melt on, so it was served on something else. It tasted decent enough, so that was ok. If you’re in the area and go here, be sure to ask for the coffee hot, otherwise, its a decent place.
