It was our anniversary dinner, a special night. The service was less than adequate, I ordered the«steelhead salmon» oscar style. I questioned the server about that, steelhead is a trout, not a salmon? She assured me that it was a trout(white meat). I ordered it and was served, I swear to God, Atlantic salmon!!! Farm raised crap, raised in pens. I fished the NW for steelhead for many years, I know what it is, and they did not serve steelhead. Even the manager got involved, and concurred that it was steelhead from Scotland. And the«oscar style», OMG the crab we brought home thinking to use it on something eatable, totally stunk up the refer!!! Disgusting!!! $ 150 later, very disappointed with our meal. Worst meal I’ve ever had, especially for what it cost. Through most of it away, and the service, I have NEVER stiffed a waitress or waiter for a tip, but when a group of regulars came in after us and got served first while we waited, and my wife never recieved a second glass of wine, 0 on the tip… we will never go back… I get the feeling the staff thought we were tourists, guess what we are locals, and locals talk to other locals…

Fresh seafood, oh-so-tender steak, paired with great wine… makes for a perfect Sunday Father’s Day dinner! Tasted the best Kobe steak in Japan and the steak here comes pretty close. Ordered the 22 oz porterhouse steak medium rare and it simply melted in my mouth! The ahi poke and salmon sashimi comes close to the best poke restaurants in Hawaii… Chef Dave is truly talented and infuses the flavors of Hawaii with the fresh catch of the day. He infuses traditional Hawaiian flavors in the ahi, salmon, and oyster. From the appetizers to the desserts, everything was truly magnificent!

Great restaurant. My family stayed in Carlsbad on vacation and we were looking for a nice place to eat just my wife, parents and I. West hit the spot. My wife and I have been fortunate to be able to eat at some wonderful restaurants during our travels. The 21 day wet aged filet I had is honestly one of the best steaks I’ve had. Further, the service was outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant.

We were staying at Legoland and asked for a recommendation and West’s was suggested. We walked in and the restaurant looked very nice but not too formal. Being from Hawaii we noticed they had Poke on the menu with Kakui nut which we thought was unusual to find on the mainland until we discovered the head chef was from Hawaii. Ordered the rib eye and it was one of the best steaks I ever ate. This from someone who eats steak 2 – 3 times a week. Perfectly cooked and fantastic flavor. My wife ordered the sea bass which she also thought was very good. Very happy to experience this place since it was one of the best meals we ate on our vacation. Fantastic service.

I’ve been to a lot of steakhouses where I live(other part of sd) and I actually really enjoyed this place. Food was great, but above all, the service we got from our waitress was perfect. I wish I could remember her name but she had short blonde hair and wasn’t too tall if that helps. Will definitely consider coming back on the service alone.

**THISWASTHEBESTMEALIVEEVEREATENHANDSDOWN** I cannot say enough good things about this place. Up until Saturday night, I never knew this place existed. My husband and I found West on Unilocal and decided to make a reservation and try it out as we are foodies and always looking for a new steakhouse to try. First off, this place is busy. Make sure to make a reservation in advance as this place is only open 4−10pm. Secondly, dress nicely. I don’t mean suit and tie, but don’t wear sneakers and a baseball hat. It is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, inside and outside. Talk about a classy, upbeat place! Everything from the woodwork, decorations and lighting, is phenomenal. Now on to the service. Our server Ann Mari was INCREDIBLE. Honestly. No exaggeration. She was SO personable, yet professional, it was the best serving experience we have ever had. We left her a $ 100 tip because she deserved every penny. She was warm, inviting, and extremely knowledgable about the history of West, the menu, and even the source of the meats! She told us exactly where my husbands steak came from, and we googled it just to test her knowledge and she was spot on, down to the exact Ranch the cattle came from. WOW. She gave us her opinion on different items on the menu, and we went with her suggestions. Now on to the FOOD. Everything was PERFECT. I mean PERFECT. I had the Bison filet mignon with a side of creamy mashed potatoes and mushrooms. I had never eaten Bison before and I was sooooo happy that I chose here as my first time. It was cooked to perfection, so tender, so juicy, so buttery. I probably could have cut it with a fork to be honest. My husband had the off-menu 12oz Wagyu steak with a side of creamy mashed potatoes and asparagus. We also got a side of truffle Mac n cheese to split. His steak was incredible. SO tender and juicy, I’ve never tried a steak so delicious as that one. We have been to several upscale steak houses such as Ruth’s Chris and Flemmings and both of these places do not even come close in comparison to West. My husband and I plan on coming here ATLEAST once a month to try everything on the menu. Again, I cannot stress enough how amazing this place is. If you want to WOW your date with a beautiful establishment, wonderful service and extraordinary food, come to West. I’m glad we did!

West Steak and Seafood has such a wonderful atmosphere. You don’t have to dress up but you would not look out of place if you did. Most importantly they have excellent food. There is a great bar to hang out in before dinner if you like. They also have Kobe beef which literally melts in your mouth it is so tender. They also have a nice seafood menu. I had the Ribeye with creamed spinach and the most beautiful mixed vegetables I have ever seen. All in all it was a really great experience and I just ate the best steak of my life. I am serious it was the BESTSTEAK ever. My husband said its the best meal he has ever had and we have eaten all over the world. Five stars for atmosphere and service also. We will definitely be back soon. I gave them five stars so I am not sure why it shows four. It’s definitely five stars.

I love this place! As a mother of two little ones, I do not get out much these days, so when I do it has to be a very special occasion. My husband loves the lamb at West, and I am a total steak girl, so we went recently to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I cannot say enough about our experience there, I wish we could go more often(darn babies.) Because Mommy likes to wear high heels, and it was a very chilly evening, we valet’ed our car. Jason was the valet that night, and he was so nice. $ 5, very reasonably priced for a fancy restaurant. Jason was personable and super friendly, we didn’t have to wait for a single minute(even though it was a relatively busy night) and we were inside and seated quickly. Rob was our server that evening, and he made some suggestions for dinner based on a few things I had been eyeing on Unilocal photos(yes I plan out my meal ahead of time… don’t judge me.) My husband ordered the lamb and a caesar salad, and I had an heirloom tomato salad, the grass-fed filet from Australia. OMG the grass-fed filet. Drool. Was it cooked in pure butter? Did the cow eat nothing BUT butter before landing on my plate? I don’t know and don’t care. That steak was amazing. No leftovers. I ate it all. YUMMMM. We ended our night with a chocolate parfait(on the house, thanks Rob for celebrating our anniversary with us) and it was truly one of the nicest dining experiences we have had in recent years. Rob was great, so attentive without being annoying, and made great recommendations. I don’t know if our server and the valet had a walkie talkie thing going on, but when we walked out the front door our car was waiting for us right at the curb. How VIP is that!!! We felt so cool. Jason had the heater at the perfect temperature for us, and it was just such a perfect end to our night. Thank you thank you to West and the great staff and food. These tired, overworked parents appreciated it so much.

A perfect place for anything but the twenty something crowd. I wouldn’t go again because the atmosphere is truly a steakhouse one and that’s not what I’m after. Lamb lollipops were about $ 50 and steaks were $ 70 and up. The sides came separately and were mushy and bland. Desserts were not impressive. Crime brûlée was grainy and hard to eat. Meat was tender and perfect. No qualms there!

West is the place to go. Got dinner reservations two days before New Year’s Eve for New Year’s Eve and they fit us in. The setting was wonderful. We started with the oysters that the sauce was so amazing my date was licking the bowl clean. The fresh field greens are grown there. The salad was pleasant with candied walnuts and cheese. Delicious. For the main course I got the Chilean sea bass and he got the bison filet mignon. Amazing. We were so full we had to wait for dessert. Overall it was a amazing meal. It was a wonderful way to bring the new year in. I have recommended it to all my friends.

My experience was fantastic. I met some friends that were in town, and being that they are former pro athletes, they have had a lot of eating out experience. I don’t get the 1 or 2 star reviews. The bar is lovely. They have an incredible wine menu and I think we tried about 6 of them. The scallops were insanely good and perfectly cooked laid on top of a small potato cake. We had to get another order of them, they were so good. We had a couple different sashimi’s, salmon belly and an ahi dish. Melted in your mouth. So good. Quality and nice cuts of fish. We also had steaks and the Chilean Seabass was to die for! If it is ever on the menu at a place that knows how to cook fish, don’t pass it up. I am happy we didn’t. The boys loved the creamed corn as well as the creamed spinach. No salads at this table. The manager was kind enough to come over and chat us up and also sent over the most incredible, oozing chocolate molten cake a la mode. We also ordered a bread pudding that is a favorite of one of the boys. Topped with ice cream also. The restaurant is nice, classy and the wait staff is very attentive. Our topics of conversation could shock anyone, and although our servers didn;t say anything, you could see the twinkle in their eye as they heard some of the locker room banter. It was cute and they were nothing but professional. I will definitely be back.

I’m really disappointed to be updating this place with my review, but it seems to that the quality has really de-escalated since all my past visits. I return to a certain establishment based on original review, but I can’t say I’ll return again. I was lazy and didn’t feel like driving to Del Mar for dining, so the next best option is to avoid a 40 min. drive and head to West, but never again! Reasons Why: The service/staff is too stuffy, the sides are mediocre, bland and the filet was so basic! There’s too many restaurants that are keeping up with trending dishes and implementing that into their craft cocktail list, or their sides, but this place is keeping things the same since day 1 which = not very exciting unless your a senior citizen :(

So went here again all the way from sacramento ca to treat my dad to a fantastic steak. And we were not disappointed. We ordered the American Kobe wagyu steak and the way the waitress described it was a cut like a filet but the flavor of a ribeye and I was sold. Got my two sides to go along which were the creamed corn and creamed spinach. I downed that steak in like 10 minutes. I couldn’t get enough of it. West steak has jumped towards the top of my steakhouses to frequently visit. And btw the service was impeccable. Thank you for the great time.

i pass this place every day on my way to work. and will admit that years and years ago, when they started advertising a high end steakhouse spitting distance from a gas station(and attached to a hotel) of the same/similar name… i was doubtful. but after hearing and reading quite a few stellar reviews from various places and people, my curiosity was piqued. if we really did have an incredible farm-to-table gem hidden away only a few miles from home, i wanted to see for myself(especially since i also pass their farm on that same daily commute). the perfect opportunity finally came last night, and my husband and i headed down for dinner. after a quick chat with our awesome server, we dove straight into the menus. per his recommendation, we started off with the jumbo sea scallops appetizer. they were perfectly seared with an amazing crust on top and bottom, stacked on top of a potato pancake and finished off with a liberal drizzle of an incredible truffle sauce. from there, we moved onto our main course(both of us ordered the same thing) — one of the evening’s specials, a 4oz wagyu baseball cut ribeye. the steak was perfectly cooked(and again with the absolutely AWESOME crust!), and just melted in our mouths. and each of the four sides we tried(the farm vegetables, sautéed spinach, mushrooms and creamy truffle mashed potatoes) were fabulous. by the end, every single bite was gone from both our plates. with just enough room to spare, we finished off our evening with a couple wonderful desserts — bread pudding(stuffed with figs and cherries, under an incredible sauce), and crème brûlée. to be honest, it’s been a long long time since we’ve enjoyed a high end date-night dinner, where every single bite of the meal was incredible. sure we’ve had plenty that were close. but more often than not, there was just this one thing or that other, which could have been a little better. the bar has been set though… last night’s experience was perfection from start to finish. thank you, west, for an amazing evening! thrilled to have a new go-to dinner destination so close to home, and we look forward to coming back soon!

The first time our server brought my lobster it was overcooked. The second time around it was drenched I’m butter(and yet yummy). Their filet mignon was good but I will tell you: it does not compare to Japanese Kobe beef. Their stuffed squash blossoms were delicious as was their beet salad. Oh, I almost forgot to mention… this is good for a romantic date — they have dimmed lighting, etc!

This place was wonderful. I got the burger and my girlfriend go the free range grass feed steak. We started with calamari. The waitress was great she check on us many times and was friendly and out going. We went just before closing and did not have to wait in any line or even wait for a table. I asked the waitress for a cocktail and she suggested the Russian mule which was perfect for the hot day. Over all everything was great. My girlfriend’s steak first came out a little over cooked but was able to be fixed in about 8 minutes. We had the lava cake for dessert and I was amazing. Would definitely recommend this place and go back.

This place reminds me of the Ranch in Anaheim. It has a great upscale look. We only went for happy hour, so I cannot comment on any of the entrees. Happy Hour has some very good deals. Every item is quite a bit lower than the regular price. The cheese plate has a variety of options with fruit, nuts and sauces to compliment the fantastic cheese. Great wines and cocktails. Service was excellent, as well. We will have to come for some of their entrees.

I wanted so badly to give this place a good review but sadly I cannot. The stars were just not aligned for my visit to this restaurant. I think the most disappointing part was not the fact that my $ 62 porterhouse was overcooked, I asked for medium rare for medium, but that the manager came over to say that they were making me a new steak and that my steak was in fact medium rare and I should order it rare plus in the future. I very politely told him I’ve ordered many steaks medium rare and that my friend ordered his steak medium rare and his looks great. But thank you for the tip. I do know what medium rare is and my steak was definitely not medium rare. Even if it was why are you, the manager, telling me, a customer, how I should order my steak. I would love to know how many people have ever heard of rare plus? No one at our table had. In fact my brother steak was also overcooked but I was told that his actually was overcooked. The whole thing was insulting to say the least. When the new stakes came out they were rare negative. I had to send it back again. It was still mooing! I’m posting a photo of my leftovers after they cooked it again. It’s pretty good now so you can imagine what it was before I sent it back for more time :) Pretty much I think we scared them with sending two steaks back and they definitely undercooked them. So in the end we had a 434 dollar bill between six people had two steaks that were mediocre. They comped me the extra glass of wine that I ordered because I had to wait for my steak to be cooked twice. By the way the glass of wine that was recommended was Silver Oak and turned out to be $ 29 a glass. Very happy that we did not have to pay for that. Not sure that you should recommend a $ 30 glass of wine to someone. I think it’s better to show the wine list. But our waiter was really awesome and we tipped him well. On a side note I started scratching halfway through the meal and when I went to the bathroom realized I was being eaten alive by bugs under the table. I was wearing a dress and everyone else was wearing pants so I was the only one affected. When I showed the fresh bites to the hostess she said the carpets had just been cleaned that day. I’m thinking that the carpet cleaning either woke up some fleas or attracted mosquitoes because the floor was probably still damp. Not sure but the manager never came to address the bugs and I asked on the way out of the hostess had told him. She confirmed she had. I think he thought I was trying to get a free meal! Haha! All in all it was not a great experience. Too bad because two of the people that I was with had eaten there before a long time ago and had much better experiences. I will definitely not be trying this place again or recommending it. There are so many good restaurants that if your service is not excellent when your food is not doing well that night, you really should just take your lumps and be gracious.

I was invited to a work luncheon and I will be back! It was a group of about 18 people speaking about 401K. I had the lobster bisque, and filet with veggies and mashed potatoes. The bisque had so much lobster in it, it made me happy! The filet was prepared perfectly and it melted in my mouth. The server was ONPOINT! Granted, we were the only people in there for lunch, but you can tell, she was marvelous and on point even when it is busy! I allowed her to choose my dessert and she knew exactly what she was doing. I look forward to going back for dinner and experience the ambiance of the restaurant. The food was amazing and so was the service!

We had the chance to head down south to celebrate an early mother’s day and I was surprised that my mom picked this place because she doesn’t usually like non-Asian food! I had made a reservation ahead of time and when we arrived, they knew me by name before I even said anything!(Although it’s probably because we were the only Asian family dining there that night at that time, LOL!) Service was wonderful and they were really nice about moving our table even though we had already sat down because the AC was too cold in that area. They had complimentary warm bread with soft butter — my ultimate favorite combination… already my meal was looking up up up! =) We each had gotten our own dish so we could try different things: — uni tagliolini: never had uni in pasta before! definitely an interesting dish and was very good — seared scallops: very well executed but could be better — halibut with pistachio: this wasn’t as special but still very good — chef’s creation of filet mignon: I always end up getting filet mignon because I can’t finish anything bigger… very well done and delicious! — porterhouse: this was so good, my husband actually finished the entire dish! — triple chocolate parfait: I’m not a fan of parfait but the rest of the table sure enjoyed it… — chocolate lava cake: who can resist!!! This place was a nice find — will definitely come back again in the future for another celebration!

Was expecting more from the reviews I read. Nice place but a bit of a chain atmosphere. We were seated(the 2 of us) between 2 large parties and we relocated ourselves to the bar area which was quieter. They were out of the bottle of wine we ordered and we had to chose mother one. Waiter wasn’t the most attentive. Food was good but nothing to write home about. All in all, not an exceptional experience… just average.

I would love to give this restaurant a higher rating but an incident occurred that was handled very poorly. I have been to this restaurant a few times. The steaks are always excellent, the side dishes are outstanding and the atmosphere is lovely. Tonight I ordered a wedge salad as a starter. It tasted a bit like sand. After a few bites I noticed something black in the middle so I cut open the lettuce wedge. It was black and had holes and was not edible. Quite gross actually. I quietly called the waiter over and he was apologetic. I was later told by another waiter that they found a bug in there. A worm I am sure. The manager came over and said«thank you for bringing this to our attention, we will inform our supplier». They asked if I wanted another salad. I declined. When the bill came, I really expected it to be discounted, or be given some sort of gesture for this gross experience. Silly me. Instead, when the waiter handed me the bill he said, we have decided not to charge you for the salad. It is the least we can do. As if they were doing me a favor not charging for it!!! Seriously, did they really expect me to be grateful that they did not charge me for the dirty, unwashed, wormy salad??? The least they could do indeed!

A good thing came out of Social Gourmand’s sad Valentine’s Day, her boyfriend’s bad example prompted her father to make reservations for dinner at West for no occasion at all. We’d already been once for happy hour, but graduated to the main dining room since Hostage Gastronome recently became Unilocal’s highest rated dentist in San Diego — hurray for his skill and effort! However, it’s been my life’s work to practice frugality, so I hobbled across the street rather than use the valet, and, though I enjoyed the evening, I came away unhappy about the waste because I happen to know that the same quality of food and ambience can be had for much less at Bistro West a few steps away… and closer to my parking space! Our waiter, Jeremy, chose a drink for me, so if you act like a light-weight girly girl, expect a not-too-sweet Sextini. The Beet Salad and Lobster Spring Roll were so filling, HG had to take his entire Wagyu Burger home(so delicious the next day!). I ordered the fish of the day, a branzino, which, after googling, I’m happy to report is a type of bass. I recognized the black veins(?) from the fresh water variety for which I fished as a kid, and I didn’t want to catch them duping diners. This bass wasn’t murky tasting at all in comparison — no hint of fishiness even in the skin. I don’t think Jeremy told me the price of the special(an added crab topping), and now I see I could have had the steak & lobster for $ 1 more:( As you may have deduced, I’m all about value, and the only difference between the steakhouse and the more economical bistro seems to be the ratio of staff to customers. That adds to the elegance, but can be annoying when they whisk away a plate from which I hadn’t sopped up all the sauce, or another with one more bite still on it. The managers in both restaurants stop by your table to chat, both host families after a tiring day at Legoland(maybe it’s sexist of me, but there seem to be lots of sugar daddies at West), but it’s the Bistro with the unbeatable dish — the crème brûlée duo — yum! I don’t mean to knock the steakhouse, but only go there if you can’t get a table at the bistro!

I highly recommend West for a great happy hour menu that involves more than your average bar food. We ordered and shared the Seared Jumbo Sea Scallops as well as the Beef Bourguignon. Both dishes were fantastic. Three scallops sit on three delicious potato cakes and are drizzled with the most amazing truffle sauce that is very creamy and not too oily. The sweet corn is a wonderful addition. My taste buds haven’t been so impressed in a very long time. At $ 19 for a small dish(or $ 14 during happy hour), it is pricey — but it’s worth it. The Beef Bourguignon was also very well executed. The tenderloin tips were cooked well and maintained their moisture and tenderness. The mushrooms were delicious. The fettuccine was cooked perfectly. And finally, and most importantly, the red wine sauce was not overpowering — an error that is all too common. The service is pretty good — very attentive but not pushy. The lighting is perfect: bright enough that you can see everything well, and dim enough to be romantic and intimate. Also — this is strange but I have to comment on their bathrooms: they are very classy! They were spotless, and each stall is more like a private room. There is hand lotion and a bright blue liquid that I thought was cologne, until I poured it all over my hands and realized it was listerine. Tip: Don’t pour listerine all over your hands; it doesn’t smell good.

I don’t always go out for dinner and drinks, but when I do, I go to West. Actually this was my first visit to the steakhouse, though I have been to their Bistro for lunch many times. My man took me for happy hour today, which is rare for us. What led us here(besides the high reviews) is that the happy hour menu includes real foods, not just fried appetizers. I ordered the beef bourguignon which was delicious. The sauce was great, and the meat was super tender. I would definitely get it again… if it wasn’t for the scallops that my man ordered. Those were the best scallops I have ever had — absolutely amazing. They were perfectly seared and everything I ever want in scallops. I will probably never return without ordering the scallops, either for myself or to share. We also took advantage of the bar — I ordered the blood orange cosmo. I love blood oranges, and I have never seen this drink anywhere else. Needless to say, I will definitely be back for scallops and a cosmo :) (For more of my date night favorites, check out my Kiss of Approval list.)

I love West Steak and Seafood! Been going there for years and love it. It’s got that classic old Steakhouse feel, without the stale smell they used to have. Once you’ve been there, you are greeted with warmth and respect every time you walk in the door. While I love the restaurant, when in need of a true«steak dinner», my favorite part is their happy hour in the bar. This isn’t your usual«bar food” — oh no, my friends! You have a choice of numerous, tasty and delicious treats– which are a perfect dinner for me, along with one of their martini’s at special happy hour prices. Their scallops, on small potato pancakes are to die for– and a very generous serving. Enough to fill me up. Their wedge salad, served with a delicious petite filet also fabulous. They have fabulous braised ribs, and much more. The bartenders are the old fashioned kind who remember what you drink the next time you come back. Haven’t seen that in years. Go my friends, you will be happy you did.
