Svendsgaard’s Inn

We had a good stay here with our two dogs. It’s a budget place but it was clean and had new (I think), decent beds and quality bedding. The rest of the furnishings could use renovation. Also, the office staff, Jaime, was helpful and personable. It’s always nice to feel welcome! Also thoughtful was that, because the inn was quiet, we were placed on the bottom but with no-​one next to us or above us. Great! The maids did a good job cleaning up the extra dog hair and bits of sand. There’s wifi, a nice pool, cookies in the lobby and an adequate breakfast. So I recommend it for a dog-​friendly place to stay. Also, if you sign up for the Inns by the Sea e-​mail list you’ll get 40% coupons on this and their other properties…

Casual and cozy, close to downtown make for a solid spot to stay in Carmel. The friendly staff and ‘little things’ they do put this Inn at 5 star. If your goal is the have a relaxing time and get to know some of the local businesses. This place is for you.

The location was perfect for walking downtown or to beach, which we did daily. The rooms are kept up pretty well, but are ready for updating. The motel offers a nice grassy area outside the rooms, which is great for pottying the dog. It’s too bad not everyone respects the «Clean up after your pet» policy! The «kitchenette» is merely a mini-​fridge and microwave and offers only two glasses and 2 coffee mugs. I recommend bringing your favorite coffee K-​cups; we didn’t care for what was provided. Overall, we did enjoy our stay and the price was reasonable for Carmel. We will stay here again.

Comfy bed, comfy linens. Clean grounds, nice pool. Staff so friendly and accommodating. Breakfast brought to room with paper which is nice but nothing special. Big tv with easy remote to use. Walls are not as thin as some Carmel inns. I love staying here when in Carmel. Dog friendly!

It was a nice little hotel. Plenty of free parking. I enjoyed the fact that they gave us breakfast at our door and paper in the morning. 2 blocks from downtown so we just walked everywhere. Room was clean and had everything we needed. I’d go back.

With three of us in our party, it was tough to find a place in Carmel that didn’t involve getting 2 separate rooms for an arm and a leg a piece. To make matters more difficult, one of us had a very early morning the next day, so we wanted the ability to have one person get up and get ready early without disturbing the other two.
Not only was our room at Svensgaard’s one of the most affordable (maybe THE most affordable) of anything I checked out in Carmel, there was a bedroom plus a pullout couch in the living room, separated by two doors and a kitchen/​dining area, making the early-​morning situation a breeze.
We also had a fireplace, which was a nice little luxury. It’s walking distance to the main drag, restaurants, and the beach. And they put out fruit-​infused water and cookies in the lobby. Nothing but good things to say about this place.

I recently stayed at Svendsgaard’s Inn and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. My room was very clean and welcoming. The room had a mini-​fridge and a microwave which I really appreciated. The grounds are beautiful as well. Very well taken care of gardens. I really enjoyed the pool as well. Despite being a very dog-​friendly inn, I didn’t hear any dogs barking which I was a little concerned about. The inn is about a 5 minute walk to all of the shops, restaurants and galleries, so very convenient. They also have a big parking lot and I never had trouble finding a spot. All in all, a very lovely trip to Carmel and I really enjoyed my stay at Svendsgaard’s Inn. I’ll definitely be back!

Everything in the room was prepared very nicely. I feel better than the hotels in Las Vegas such as the Wynn. I really love here. Very comfortable and relaxing.

For the people who say it’s too expensive for what you get, try staying elsewhere nearby and then we can talk. Motel 6 on Fremont street by the Monterey Fairgrounds: $ 199 for the same night we paid $ 298 at Svendgaard’s for a suite with two flat screen TVs with DirecTV, a freestanding fireplace, giant jacuzzi tub, kitchenette, Keurig coffee maker, kitchen table, separate vanity area from the bathroom, and breakfast/​local newspaper delivered at 7:30 am. At Motel 6 you can walk to Denny’s or CVS, at Svendgaard’s you can walk through Carmel and to the beach. Both are dog friendly, so there’s that. But your dog will like you better when you’re at Svendgaard’s.
Yes, it’s a little dated looking and it’s not right on Ocean Ave, but it’s noisy when you get closer to the main drag and this is right on the fringe of town 3 blocks away where you feel a little more laid back. It’s clean clean clean and everything works, and the staff is incredibly friendly and hard working when it comes to getting you into the room you want. We love it here.

My stay at Svendsgaard’s Inn was very pleasant. This Inn is located approximately 3 blocks from the main shopping. The staff is friendly, courteous, and professional. I really enjoyed my corner room with the many windows. I gave this Inn a score of Very Good vs. Excellent because the dog bowl outside the main entrance lacked clean water and I did not receive my dog bones with my continental breakfast on the first day

Been to several dog-​friendly inns in carmel, but this exceeded our expectations! Very clean and accommodating!
The age range of our group is 12 – 80 years old and EVERYONE was very happy and would stay here again. I think that says it all :)
On the doggy side, they were very accommodating. Rooms are very roomy, so my doggy felt like he had ample room. Upon request, they prepared our rooms with a large doggy bed, blanket and food/​water bowls. Biscuits are in the lobby too for a midday snack!

Great location to shops and the beach. We booked last minute and they were extremely accommodating. Dog friendly rooms and grounds. Hotel staff were professional and courteous. Very helpful with luggage delivery to the room. Parking was great too!

We have stayed here twice now and simply love the place. This time we were pleasantly surprised by a jacuzzi tub in lieu of a kitchenette. Such a great room! We loved it! Not a thing to complain about.

I loved my stay here. Perfectly adequate 2 bed guest room. Very clean (had to open the window for a couple minutes to air out the smell of cleaning product), good shower pressure. Walked in and there was classical music playing on the TV. Coffee maker in room. Tiny fridge in the closet.
We didn’t have any dogs, but it was very quiet even as a dog friendly hotel. They have a quiet time of 10p — 8am, and everyone around seemed to adhere to that rule.
Staff was very nice. There’s free WIFI. Plenty of parking. Walkable distance to Ocean avenue where all the shops are. They deliver a cooler of breakfast items at your door between 730 and 8am. It has cereal, milk, orange juice, pastries, and fruit.
Best of all, there are these Ginger Spice cookies in the lobby that are deeelicious. I found out they’re made by Pacific Cookie Company, and I am mourning the fact that I can’t get these cookies in LA anywhere.

I enjoyed this place. I stayed here with my fiancé and two dogs, and we had a pleasant stay. This was our first trip up to Carmel, and it was perfected by the inn. The pros include the location which truly cannot be beat. We were able to walk everywhere in Carmel: shops, restaurants and the beach. Parking was also easy and always available. The inn itself is beautiful and clean. We stayed in one of the pet-​friendly rooms on the first floor, and I was actually surprised by how clean everything was. The bed was very comfortable, and the room was right across from a large, grassy pet area which our dogs enjoyed. Each morning, we looked forward to the adorable breakfast knapsack filled with juice, milk, cereal, yogurt and pastries. It was the perfect amount for both of us. The newspaper was an added treat. It was great to wake up and grab the breakfast outside our door and enjoy our food in bed… a much nicer alternative than racing to breakfast before it ends. We didn’t interact with the staff often, but the attendant who checked us in was extremely friendly and provided us with a map that pointed to dog-​friendly restaurants in the area. If you eat at a restaurant on their list and show them your room key, you will either be offered a discount or a free glass of wine, etc.
We had some minor issues such as a couple of the lights not working. The price was a little steep considering what what we got. I understand that Carmel is a pricey area to begin with, but we still felt it was a little too expensive. Overall, our stay was pleasant. Not extraordinary, but we enjoyed ourselves.

Perfect location. Perfect parking. Yes the place may appear somewhat old but it will impress you. It’s very clean. They have free water, refrigerator, and Keruig in your room. We only met one member of the staff and he was friendly. I reserved the room for the wrong date but they still adjusted and accommodated us. I don’t believe there is AC or I just couldn’t find it. The room temp was just fine with the window open. Overall quiet location. Not too close to the loud action on Ocean Ave. but certainly not to far. The small walk is preferred. Just a pleasant atmosphere. I won’t stay anywhere else.

My sweetie surprised me with a special two-​night stay at this little spot. If you’ve overnighted in Carmel before, you’ve no doubt noticed that many of the inns are old motor lodges that have been updated and renovated to «up» the charm factor — and the rates! Svengaard’s is one of these.
Reservations were made quickly online, with some helpful phone support to answer some of our questions about the individual character of the rooms. Our room, #18, was a lower unit in the U-​shaped complex, backing onto 4^th Ave. and fronting on the courtyard-​style lawn. This location proved convenient with the dogs, as well as quiet for us.
The carpeted room was nicely laid out, with a gas log brick fireplace — a real one — and a seating area with a sofa. Charm factor: 4 stars. With a real bathtub this could have been a 5, but the small shower provided was clean and adequate.
Although I’m not a fan of the Green Mountain pods, the Keurig coffee maker worked just fine. A «continental breakfast» delivered each morning with a newspaper (wow, they still make those!), though simple, was a nice touch. It’s discreetly dropped off in an insulated cooler that’s handy for picnicking.
Location?! You can’t beat it! Just across the street is Brophy’s Tavern (see reviews) and less than a block away is Hog’s Breath. In 10 minutes, you can walk your dogs to the best dog beach in 100 miles!
Svengaard’s Inn is part of the Inns By The Sea group, so once you’ve stayed, you’ll get half-​off offers to use during their slow times. Nice touch!
Simple, quaint, convenient, dog friendly. If that’s what you’re wanting in Carmel, this could be your place!

Carmel: Who knew you were so freaking adorable. Not I, and I’m a better gal having known you the last three days.
JAM and I were checked in by a pleasantly articulate gentleman that gave us a rundown of the city and a map of the town, as well as a list of restaurants that would give us a discount if we showed our room key. This list also indicated which restaurants/​cafes were dog friendly. The hotel and city are both very dog positive.
The room itself is quite large, and while the bathroom wasn’t the best I’ve seen it was entirely adequate and clean. The only minor complaints would be the lack of air conditioning in the units, and the fact that our queen bed was pretty concave and JAM and I had to struggle not to end up cuddling (because with no AC, ew).
The staff was really nice. They have complimentary breakfast delivered to your door every day. There is complimentary tea/​coffee/​cookies in the lobby all day e’ery day. Location is very convenient to shops downtown. Wi-​fi blows, but is free. Totally a fan.
