What a great pub! I was pleasantly surprised to find this gem in a beach town. I wish I caught the bartender/server’s name – he was working the entire restaurant flawlessly, gave a great beer recommendation, and had our check ready before we asked for it. My mom loved her fish tacos(fresh fish!) and I had a great burger. Wish I were staying in town longer to try the shepherd’s pie, meatloaf, and mac & cheese balls.

Went to grab some dinner here last night with my wife and 17 month old daughter. From the moment we walked in we were treated extremely well! Our server who was also the bartender was very warm and friendly as well as attentive. I had read that the fried mac and cheese balls were a must try and they weren’t wrong they were delicious. We also got a bacon cheeseburger that was tasty and huge. The food was great and so was the atmosphere and staff. Can’t wait to go back and try other things!

Fantastic restaurant full of awesome bartenders and great food. They have a nice bar and outside area too. They usually have bands on the weekend. A little small inside for a larger party but defiantly one of my top places to grab a bite in CB.

The food is fresh and very good. My fave is the grilled chicken salad. Lots of veggies! My kids like the fried cheese balls(ok, so do I!). Service is very good. Love the atmosphere. As a local, this is our go-to food spot.

We went to Hoplite twice during the week we were in Carolina Beach for vacation. The first time I had meatloaf with mashed potatoes. The second time I had fish tacos. Both times the food was very good. The owner is friendly and accommodating with food requests. Due to a food allergy I asked to have my fish grilled instead of fried and he didn’t hesitate. We also had both beer and margaritas while there and both were very good. They have a good selection of beers and have happy hour specials nightly. I would highly recommend Hoplite to anyone in the area.

My only regret is that I had but one meal here while at the beach last week. Bar food at its best!

My husband and I went to Hoplite a few weeks ago. We got there early and I’m glad we did because the place got busy. The food was delicious and the service was great. Chas, the owner chatted with us and our server was attentive. I had a Ruben and my hubby had the meat loaf. Not sure I’ll be back through Carolina Beach, but if I am I will definitely eat at Hoplite!

We went here on a Sunday just wanting a little something so we settle on two appetizers. We ordered the Mac n Cheese balls and the grilled shrimp quesadilla. The Mac n Cheese balls came with a sweet chili dipping sauce, but I found just plan old yellow mustard was an awesome taste combination. Good thing we saved the sweet chili sauce, because the shrimp quesadilla was served with sour cream and salsa — instead of using them we used the sweet chili sauce, AWESOME combination. The Bloody Mary’s were spot on — just the right combination.

Cold beer, killer onion rings along with great service. Now onto the food. French fries are Orida crinkle cuts! Fish is a step above Mrs. Pauls and I’ve never seen $ 16.00 nachos on a menu. The wife had a Ruben that was good with the homemade chips.

Thank you Unilocalers for recommending this place. Reuben was top notch as well as the onion rings. Great drinks, personable staff. Even though I’m at the beach, I don’t eat seafood. This place was perfect for me

When we walked in we were greeted by locals, which is always a good sign when at the beach. This place is a true bar with the atmosphere that comes with it, not a great spot for kids. I had the burger and my wife had the ruben. The burger was just ok, the ruben saved the day for sure. I recommend grabbing the onion rings as a side, you will not regret it. They also have a pool table, fun to play while waiting for food.

How this place is called a beer garden is beyond me. Maybe in the South they’re not used to a good selection but really there is NO selection. The best craft they offer is Son of a Peach Wheat. Really? And I’m sitting here sipping in this swill waiting 30 minutes for a Buffalo Wrap? It’s not even busy. And deservedly so. I’d hate to see this place on a weekend. The name draws you, the tourist, in but I’m sure it’ll be closed within the year due to lack of local following.

Top notch! Excellent service. Outstanding food. Wish we’d tried this place sooner. This is our new Go To place. Casual, relaxed, comfortable. Affordable. Scratch made food. Excellent. Can’t say it enough.

I have been eating at this delightful little pub for the past 5 years… and with only a few exceptions have always asked for their burger.(On rare occasions I’ve been on a health kick and asked for a Reuben, or a wrap– these too were excellent). But the burger… oh my god! I am 54 years old, and have had my share of burgers. This is the best– EVER.

Close by the beach. Good selection of beer on tap. Nachos were meh. The cheese sticks were the best ever — big sticks of mozzarella, home battered and fried. The Reuben was big — and I ordered the Lil Wuss. Good place– pool table off to the side.

Although not exactly a hole in the wall, but definitely a gem on the strip! Hoplite is such an unassuming little pub located right off the main road in Carolina Beach. When we arrived, it was late in the afternoon and quiet. The bartender was also our waitress and she was as sweet as rock candy. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich — and my oh my, was it THE best pulled pork sandwich I’ve ever had! Not overly saucy or sweet, the pork was perfectly doused in a bbq sauce and cooked so tenderly. The slaw in the sandwich was also a perfect touch. My boyfriend ordered a chicken sandwich and I was pleasantly surprised by how juicy it was. I tried the Mac’n’cheese balls and although it wasn’t my favorite, the rest of the table raved about them. We’ll definitely be stopping by again on our next trip!

Decided to breakdown dinner & this was the appetizer stop. Greeted promptly & the atmosphere was relaxing and inviting for a dive bar. Got the impression the locals stop by a lot. Which is normally a good sign when venturing out for a meal Ordered the housemade Nachos & fried housemade Mac n’Cheese balls. They were awesome. (Review stars given based on my experience of the place & not made to compare with another lodging/eatery establishment.)

Carolina Beach isn’t just for tourists, and that’s exactly what Hoplite believes. It’s the locals place for cold beer, great service, fresh food, and affordable prices! Open 24⁄7 without fail, and the kitchen is open until at least midnight every day. My favorite thing to eat here would have to be the hand made friend Mac N Cheese balls and the burgers! Each Thanksgiving they offer a traditional turkey dinner which is way more food than I’ve seen anywhere else!

It’s Christmas Day and you’re looking for a place to eat(and a beer) after exploring the beach. The people at the Inn I was staying at mentioned this place would be open. I stopped by around 2:30 and they were not but someone greeted me at the door and said they would open at 4pm. So after finding another bar that was open, I stopped here on my way back. The place is tiny but laid out well. There is a rectangular bar in the middle and tables around the outside wall. They serve food here, have a full bar and serve a few beers on tap. I had actually already eaten but was interested in something«light» so I went with onion rings. Wrong move for something light! As I was watching the food prep area, I realized that portions are huge here. That onion must have been the size of a basketball! They were beer battered as well which made them quite delicious. For beer, I wasn’t too impressed with the selection… Shocktop, Guiness, and a few others but only one Real craft beer that happened to be from down the street — A Good Hops Double IPA. Being a beer snob, that is what I went with the IPA. It was ok… it didn’t seem like a double IPA but it was easy to drink. The bartender was awesome and friendly. I think he might have been the owner and his wife/girlfriend was helping him out a bit. And most of the clientele seemed to be locals. I assume they get more out of towners during the warmer months.
