Ponderosa Steak House

I have family memories of this Ponderosa. It’s been around for several years. I was again in town visiting family. The Ponderosa offers both individual menu entrees as well as a full buffet. The buffet seems to be the most popular option. After walking in, go up to the cashier, order which option you want and go stake out your table. We all went for the buffet.
It has a good size salad bar that was stocked with a variety of options. Everything looked fresh and kept clean. Buffet entrees offered a variety of «comfort» style food. I enjoyed their meatloaf, mashed potato’s with brown gravy and green beans. They ran out of baked potato’s while I was there. The taco /​pasta looked picked over and some items may have been sitting there for awhile.
The staff was always friendly, even jovial, with a smaller town feel to the place. Folks seemed to know each other. For the price and value that you get, it is well worth it.

Okay, I will admit that I am a big, awful food snob when it comes to American buffets. They are not my first choice for where to eat out and I usually find the food lackluster to just plain depressing. That being said — I have to apologize for preemptively turning up my nose at the idea of Ponderosa. We hosted a birthday party for about 50 people here and it was a wonderful experience! Everyone placed their orders at the front counter before making their way back to the expansive private room. The service was excellent, in spite of the chaos of lots of people milling around visiting with each other and the restaurant had no issue with us bringing in our own cake. Like most of the guests, I went for the buffet and was pleasantly surprised at the great flavor and quality of the offerings. I had meatballs in a dark, rich gravy over noodles, fried shrimp and a few salads that brought back fond memories of my grandmother, despite some chuckling over the Midwest obsession with mayo-​based salads. I was surprised to see pork and sauerkraut on the buffet and it was as good as my grandmother used to make. I don’t think I’m signing up to live in Carrollton full time but I have to give credit where credit is due and thank Ponderosa for providing the backdrop and food for a great night where my family made some wonderful memories and provided a rocking 95^th birthday party for my grandfather. Well done!
