I use this shooting range when teaching classes, and when hosting shooting events, or just going out with the family. I like using the pistol bays when I’m out there as i feel safer being in control of my immediate area. However lots of the time the bays are reserved so I’m forced to use the regular pistol range, and that is a nice setup as well, with built in shooting tables, and a concrete walkway. makes the brass pickup easier. I recommend checking out the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Club Website as they have a calendar of events so you can see if the bays are reserved before heading out. Only negative is currently there is no restrooms at out there, but the club and the City are trying to get that fixed. the clubs website is

I’ve only been here once, but got an overall good feel of the place. Nice drive to get here and it was relatively quiet and not too crowded(went around 4pm on a Monday). The boy and I came to complete the shooting part of our test to receive our CCWs. As we drove by, there seemed to be a variety of spots that were sheltered and allowed for long and short range shooting. We didn’t use these spots, however, and went to the«dug-outs.» The class instructors set up targets and this is where we shot. I liked it because it allowed you to be away from everyone else and kind of do your own thing without worrying if someone might shoot you while you changed your target or something. However, I do see the appeal for the other parts of the range as they were sheltered and looked like you could sit down as well if you prefer that. Coming from Texas where it costs upwards of $ 30 for ONE hour and two people to shoot, a free shooting range is completely awesome to me. Sure, some people are going to abuse it and leave their trash, but for the most part, it looked pretty clean to me. I had a great time and would enjoy coming back here to shoot, despite the 30 minutes it takes to get here. For a free range, I’ll take it. As long as you’re aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on others, or simply stay away, you shouldn’t have any issues here. Be sure to bring your own targets and pee before you arrive, or be prepared to go behind a bush!

I like this place because it’s usually pretty quiet(except for the sound of gun fire, of course!) If they had bathrooms I’d give it 5 stars but the range serves me well so I don’t mind going behind a bush!

I like this shooting range a lot. It’s outside and away from everything. Besides having a rifle range with cement tables protected by overhangs from the sun and rain, there is also a shorter pistol range, with the same overhead protection. Then, off to the side are several fairly new(in the last several years anyway) individual ‘shooting lanes’ consisting of berms that have been set up between each lane. This is my favorite section to shoot because you can ‘move’ at your own pace and change targets without everyone else having to stop shooting. And, you meet the nicest, most polite people at a gun range(smile here…).

These reviews are written from the perspective of regulation-loving rich kids who think every yokel Nevadan is a complete moron. Yes, you may run into some trashy idiots here, and no, there is no tax-paid babysitter on duty to hold your hand while you shoot. But there is tremendous freedom in shooting at whatever target you have and getting along with others using the facility. Most of us have enough respect to pick up any trash we shoot, and there is a network of people who work hard to keep the range neat. Nevada is about freedom; if you require impeccably manicured public facilities with stern regulations and only college-educated patrons, move to California. Give ‘em your paycheck on the way in.

I’ve been a competitive shooter since the age of 10, so I’ve had the opportunity to shoot on a lot of shooting ranges all over the country. There are a lot of very nice shooting ranges in the USA, Canada, & Europe, unfortunately the Carson City Shooting Park is not one of them. The sad thing is that this could be a really nice range, but the individuals that use this range are, by their disrespect for this facility, 3-steps below trailer trash. These slobs with guns and a pickup truck load of trash [that they gleefully scatter about the range property] will never be totally worthless as they can always serve as a bad example. I can’t wait to see another anti-gun documentary starring the slobs that inhabit the Carson City Shooting Park range. You know what you can expect from the low-lifes at this range when you see the shot-up road signs on the road leading to the range. .. ah I mean trash dump populated by armed slobs. This place needs supervision.

A great desert facility located next to the Carson City dump. Newly up dated by the county. Not a California or Ariz type range. Very clean and safe.

A pretty scuzzy & wretched dung heap of a shooting range which is more of a landfill in the making and garbage dump than an actual faclility for serious shooters. Unlike some of the private shooting clubs I belong to this one is open to the public and therefore no one’s really being paid to upkeep the place. Also, a certain percentage of the folks who frequent this facility are less interested in serious shooting and are more about just plinking at their old TVs, auto bodies, fridges, glass bottles(or whatever other Hee Haw horsehit strikes their fancy) and since many of these same people do not pick up after themselves –this range has become something of an impromptu junkyard. In addition, many of these weekend warriors displayed some seriously careless and unsafe gun handling practices. That said, everyone was pretty good about regulating themselves and cooperating when it came to abiding by ceasefire periods and allowing for interested parties to go downrange to set up/check targets. One of the other few things I liked about this range was the fact that it was possible to shoot out to 200yards which is always a plus for us rifle shooters.
