I was really craving some honey walnut shrimp and decided to come here. Ordered the honey walnut shrimp, a sweet and sour chicken over rice and an order of chicken fried rice. The fried rice was good, a little on the oily side. I did get my craving satisfied and the sweet and sour was okay but was served with a lot of rice. The parking lot does seem a little small and the service wasn’t great but okay. We were seated right away and they boxed the food up for me. We were also given hot and sour soup even though we didn’t order it.

The service was awful. Owner and waitresses are super rude. The food was ok but really not worth it.

We have been coming here for years. My husband tips very well. We had a favorite waitress, Sue, who is now retired, so we miss her. The replacements are not so nice and there is always a little language barrier. Just recently, my husband ordered food to go. It came to $ 86 and change. Ok mind you this is to go. Since it was the holidays, he gave $ 100 and told them to keep the rest. They were very appreciative. Next week, I come in, they’re very nice to me, I ordered a rice plate for a coworker, and it came to $ 9.80. The waitress Shirley, who I normally like and tip very well,(we always slip her a $ 10) kept saying, «minimum $ 10» when I gave her my card. I said, «really, Shirley?» I meant, «I can’t believe you’re quibbling over 20 cents when we tip well even if we don’t have to and my husband just gave you a $ 14 tip for a to go order!!!» I was livid. I even told the owner, who pretended not to understand, that she can’t arbitrarily put a limit on card charges. It’s not legal, but apparently a common practice. Yeah, they don’t want to pay a service fee. I get it. But it’s still doesn’t sit right with me after many years of patronage and excessive tips. Okay, now for the food. The hanging meats are not bad, but beware, when you ask for a half duck, stand right there and watch them give you a half duck. I don’t care who you are, Chinese or not, unless you watch, you will get a pieced together half duck. No, cut the duck in half lengthwise then cut it into portions. As if we don’t know what half is. The intent is not to give as much breast meat. Who are they saving it for? Good portions for the other items, Mongolian beef is not very good, but we like the black bean sauce fish. Good wontons, meaty and plump. Food ain’t bad, service hit or miss, the $ 10 minimum is ridiculous, especially since we always eat there and spend always an arm and a leg, and as other reviewers mentioned, watch the tab, unless you read Chinese characters, they could slip other items in there.

Moved further from Chinatown, so this is by far the closest authentic Chinese cuisine in Castro valley.

I like this place. Being from NY, this is one of the places I like in the SL/CV area.

This is worth the trip to Castro Valley for those that love Chinese food. I am looking forward to my next Chinese culinary experience here. Both my in dining experiences here were exceptional from the food to the service. The same goes for take out. I love it how our waitress made me feel welcome my first time there and how she remembered what we ordered the next time we were there. The Baristas at Peets coffee in Hayward could learn something about customer service from this restaurant.

Ok… so this place is usually my favorite chinese place in the east bay. I make it a habit to come here because their shrimp and scrambled eggs over rice is sooooo good. Unfortunately this place has let me down BIGTIME! I ordered my usual shrimp scrambled eggs over rice and said I wanted it well done. The lady repeated it back and we were all good. I picked up my food and headed to work which is an hour away. Open my food and it’s not what I ordered. I call back wanting a refund. The lady then tells me I must come back with the food and get a refund. So because of their mistake they want me to drive back from work in order for them to give me what I originally wanted. I don’t know about you but that seems like crap. I’m honestly very disappointed because I really love to the food here, but bad service says it all.

Really delicious Chinese Street Food. I’ve had the: _Roasted Duck Lo-Mein _Tomato Beef Pan Fried Chow Mein _Gravy Beef Chow Fun _Chicken Congee All of it fantastic. It’s fast, good and cheap. Not a fancy or nice place to dine in per say. I always get my orders to go. It’s my go to spot for dinner.

Had lunch here for the first time in a long while, and I have to say I was very impressed. I had the Roast Duck Won Ton with Flat Rice Noodles(haw fun), and while it was one of the most expensive items on the menu at $ 9.95, it was HUGE. The won ton was tasty and each had at least one whole shrimp, and the duck was just right(breast, leg and back pieces). The biggest problem was there was no room in the bowl to get noodles or the broth! Others in my group had the Roast Pork Rice Plate(super generous and very tasty) and the Roast Duck Rice Plate, each $ 6.99. Someone had the Shrimp and Egg Chow Fun, which was not very good. But the roast meats were excellent, and the portions were gigantic all around. I would definitely recommend this place for a barbecue rice plate or won ton bowl.

So… I called the restaurant to place a to go order. From the moment the lady picked up the phone I was turned off but decided to go ahead and place an order anyway. I told the lady I was ordering from the online menu and was hoping for some suggestions as it was harder to see on my phone. I asked for a recommendation on a dish and was told«just order, we have lots of options.» I ended up ordering and calculated out the price and it should have been $ 35. I go inside to pay and leave and was told that it is $ 54. I told her that is way more then it should be as I added the prices up. She told me that she hears that all the time but the prices online are outdated. When I called in I specifically told her I was ordering off the online site. The food was ok and the prices are decent but the service is atrocious. There are so many other places that have good food and good service that I will be going to.

So I order the $ 8.25 plate(beef and broccoli over rice) which comes with soup. I get a huge bowl of soup so I thought I was getting a deal but at the end I got charged separately? I didn’t even bother arguing with them as they barely speak English. The food was mediocre. 3 stars max for this place.

My daughter was craving Peking Duck and we got it here… it was a whole duck, they don’t do halfsies… unless you want a roasted duck instead. Daughter was happy. The pork & preserved egg porridge was decent too. Wasn’t too thrilled with pig’s ear w/bean sprout, when the ears are warmed up, they stick together, I guess I was looking for something cold, but that was my fault.

I usually order the roast pork and Peking duck; they never disappoint. Hong Kong style noodles are really tasty. Other dishes such as Mongolian beef, Kung pao chicken, sweet and sour chicken, etc. The portions are huge. The staff are really helpful. The place is really small but every time we go there, we manage to find a table. It’s our go-to Chinese restaurant every time we crave good food, reasonable prices, huge portions and friendly staff.

Please note, don’t expect fast and friendly service but it’s alright. The food is decent and some of the younger servers are nice. Solid«more real» Chinese place(unlike Panda Express)

I’ve always had great service with Hong Kong BBQ Restaurant, both customer service and food wise. Their parking lot is a little small, it’s shared between the Liquor store next door and the European Market. Make sure to park in the allocated spots or you’ll hear it from the owners of both those spots coming to haggle and tell you to move! They must hate it because everyone always comes to HKBBQ for their food. I’ve never really explored outside what I like from here. I’m that kind of person. find something you like and eat it til you get so sick of it you can’t stand the smell of it anymore. I absolutely love their tomato beef chow mein. Yup, it’s exactly what you’re thinking. It’s a Chinese version of spaghetti. Call me Americanized, but this is amazing! You get ample slices of beef, noodles smothered in tomato sauce, onions and bell peppers. Their BBQ pork is great too! I’ve gotten their Duck Rice combo plate here once or twice, and it’s good if you can score yourself a fatty duck. If not, it’s a hit or miss. Definitely, call in your order and it’s ready within 10 minutes. Everyone speaks English here for you non Chinese speaking customers. I’ve never had issues ordering and picking up at the exact time they said it’d be ready. Never dined in, but it seems like a lot of people take their order to go.

This is the go to Chinese take out place for my family and I. We live nearby and it’s always fast and easy. The meals come in sizable proportions and it’s always fresh. You can also order bbq pork, roasted pork, or roasted duck at the counter. They chop it for you too. This place is more of a quick eat for me so I’m not so sure about dining in. The Chinese staff are friendly and always greet you with a hello. I ordered fried rice to go today and was in and out in 10 mins.
