I grew up in Cedar Falls and have the fondest memories of Spring and Summer weekends that were bookended by trips to Jordan’s to prep the garden and work in the yard. There was both a sense of community and sense of caring with the family-owned business that resonated even when I was a young kid. Some 30 years later, I was thankful to see that this local nursery was still in business despite what I imagine must be increased competition from big-box retailers and their garden centers(Home Depot, Lowes, Menards) as well as likely decreased spend due to the economic downturn. We decided to redo the landscaping at my parents’ home in CF. While the end result of the work is decent, I decided to write a review to share some of the frustrations of working with this business. When we started discussing the project, we clearly asked if we could pay some amount upfront as downpayment but were told that for some reason(I don’t recall why) they couldn’t process any credit cards that day and not to worry about it. We emphasized that we would need to pay by American Express and were told that paying by credit card wouldn’t be a problem. When the work was finally done(understandably delayed due to lots of rain and backlog of other work), we learned that the person at Jordan’s who worked with us on the design had not even come to the house to check if things were put in where they were supposed to have been. The part of the lawn that was supposed to be replaced with grass seed was only about 75% done, with about a 3ft by 8ft patch of ivy left in the middle of the lawn. Where the downspouts are, they were supposed to put rock but only put it under one of them. When we pointed it out, they agreed they were supposed to have done that and fixed it(only to charge us $ 45 more for the rock they failed to put in the first place). We left them numerous messages to get the invoice, but never got a call back on it. When we went in person over July 4th to pay for it, we were told that they do not accept American Express(even though we had agreed to a 4% credit card charge in advance). We said we could either pay by AMEX or by check as of 9⁄1. They said they would prefer a check on 9⁄1. When I called to ask for a revised invoice, I was rudely told that they were going to add a finance charge for the delay in payment(even though we had tried to pay several times). This is a small business, I get it. It’s family-owned, I respect that. But they refuse to communicate via email, they cannot send quotes or invoices over email, they rarely return phone calls, and they are often closed on the holidays. If you want to work with them, just go it eyes wide open and know that the service level you would hope to get from a family-run business is just not there anymore.
