Los Cabos

We went there when my daughter was two. We didn’t come back for a year but returned when she was three. We were seated, and then the waiter came back with the toy that we’d left behind the previous year. That’s the kind of place this is. The people there really care about their restaurant and their customers.
The food is good and reasonably priced, the waitstaff is efficient and friendly, and the décor is nice without being pretentious. You can’t beat the Main Street location. We like to eat on the deck when the weather is nice, but usually wind up eating inside.
Is the food authentic? I don’t know. I know it is good and a value.

Neat little place for a Mexican-​type lunch. The menu here on Unilocal is pretty outdated, so while they do have what Unilocal shows, they also have a TON more stuff, so be prepared for a lot more options. In case you’re not versed with Mexican lingo, they have an entire section of their menu devoted to defining a lot of the terms used in Mexican cuisine to give you a good idea of what you’re ordering.
Los Cabos has a neat little arrangement. They have seating outside on a little private deck that overlooks Main Street. It’s a crowded little deck since everybody seems to like to sit out there, but it’s neat that you can watch the coming and goings of Main Street. The inside has tables and booths to choose from. The inside, however, is extremely dark. Not like, in a «mood lighting» sort of way. In the «none of the lights are on so it’s just outdoor sunlight streaming in». It leads to a neat, dark dining experience, but it honestly hurt my eyes to be back out in the sunlight when I was done dining. Maybe a bit more fill light would be preferable indoors. Or just eat outside.
I love good Nachos. Like, a lot. That’s why I was pretty disappointed by the nachos here. You get a basket full of free nachos when you dine here, but it really wasn’t worth eating them. They have virtually no flavor to them, aren’t salted, and aren’t warm. Pretty disappointing really. I was hoping they’d use different nachos when I ordered their Nachos Grande dish, but that was a silly thing to hope. They use the exact same Nachos — only it’s slightly better because they’re covered in refried beans, cheese, tomatoes, green peppers, and sour cream. Also, despite my request to the contrary, they also were covered in guacamole — and whole lot of it. I just spooned it off of my meal onto a napkin instead of asking them to remake the entire dish. Would not each the Nachos Grande again. Pretty bland. For the price, portion size was also pretty small. At most restaurants, a $ 7 dish will leave me feeling overstuffed. Here, I was pleasantly unhungry, but it definitely wasn’t the «hunger fixer» I’m used to from most restaurants. As it was just nachos with some cheese and veggies on top, the price seemed a bit high.
However, someone in my party had the Cheese and Meat Quesadilla, and it was surprisingly good. A much better showing of what Los Cabos can offer. The cheese and meat blended together nicely and the tortillas it was in was nice and warm. Each slice wasn’t cut all the way through which required trying to cut warm tortillas with butterknives (protip: not easy), but it was pretty delicious. Would eat that next time I come.
As a random note, they deserve Coke products here (alongside a large selection of beer), but you’re only offered one free refill.
Service was okay. Most of the staff spoke Spanish to one another, and they had a Spanish dialect as well. However, they did speak English for taking our order and whatnot. Decently friendly staff, and our order was taken quickly, food was brought quickly, and check was taken care of quickly. Absolutely no complaints about the service (aside from getting my special menu request wrong)
Would come back. Would definitely not eat the nachos again, but the Cheese and Chicken Quesadilla would have been worth it.
Extra tip: For those that like to save money, Los Cabos seems to regularly print a coupon in the Cedar Valley Super Saver newspaper that gets sent to your homes. Check that out for $ 4 off two entrees and two drinks.

I drive through Cedar Falls about once a week and usually like to stop in at Pablo’s but they were closed so I thought I’d check out Los Cabos. Service was pretty good and the outside area was pretty nice. Chips and salsa were decent. I got the special, Steak Fajitas. Somehow onions were buttery and general theme was lacking in flavor, though I was impressed I got 4 tortillas. In a pinch I may give a second chance, but not if Pablo’s if open… Steak quesadilla with cayenne salsa… MMMMMM

Food is great! Service is excellent! Every time we are in Iowa we have to come here. We have never had a bad meal/​experience. I highly recommend eating here

Okay, where to begin. One I am from Cedar Falls and I currently live here. But I am a San Diego resident for the past 11 years. This was the worst Mexican food ever. The service was absolutely horrible.
I walked in and I was seated. And forgotten about for 20 minutes. The waiters were in the kitchen singing songs to each other. And sitting behind the register on their phones. They sat me on the wall in a booth, the waiters couldn’t see me if they tried because the divider is 6′ tall. Two waiters walked past me and wouldn’t even make eye contact. Finally some joe-​schmoe «accidentally» came towards me and I looked at him and he said «oh sorry» and went to leave and I said «NO! I’ve been ready!» He couldn’t have looked more defeated that I caught him. So he takes my order and the entire time he is looking at me like I’m freaking stupid, total dumb dog look in his face the entire time.
My michelada was sub par, do you want this gringa to come show your people how to make a good one? I mean I’ve been to Tijuana enough times that I have seen them made and been taught by one fish taco joint personally. And don’t act so surprised that I know good Mexican beer like Sol.
I ordered the Tacos Al Carbon (steak), I asked to have the toppings on the side, no big deal I like to make my own taco. So they bring me my food, I got a tablespoon of pico, some lettuce, dollop of guacamole, and a pinch of cheese – FOR FOUR TACOS. I asked for my pico, and then I found out I was charged $ 1.45 for pico. Then I asked for limes for my tacos because who doesn’t eat «street tacos» without limes?! The service sucked so bad that I had to go to the bar to get the limes myself. And then my waiter wanted to charge me for the limes after he found out I went behind his back and got them.
Do not go here. I will never ever ever come back. Or maybe I will.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the cedar valley. Great food– Always hot & comes in a timely manner. Everyone who works there is friendly & helpful. They have a nice area with tables outside too. Prices very reasonable for what you get.

I absolutely love being able to sit outside on their patio area and the food is good.

The margaritas were great. However, the service was mediocre and i found a piece of hair in my food. Very disappointing. I would not go back.

Pretty solid Mexican food. Nothing too special, but always decent. Good lunch deals. Large portions. The salsa is probably my favorite thing about it. Staff is friendly and helpful. The outdoor patio right on Main St is nice when it’s warm out. Finding close parking can be a pain, especially on the weekends, but that’s pretty standard for the location.

Great food!!! if you want fresh Mexican good food, go for it! Not too much spicy, very good environment! Either you want to sit outside or inside!
Delicious food

Well, here goes my first ever 1 star review on Unilocal.This place was AWFUL. I should have been clued in when they brought out chips to the table that were actually so stale they were soft. REALLY? A Mexican joint that can’t even do the chips right? My meal was total blandness and lacked any authentic Mexican taste whatsoever, but I ate it because I was hungry. BIG MISTAKE. Later that night I spent several hours bent over the toilet throwing up every bite, and my gut still hurts today (the day after). I don’t know if it was food poisoning or what, but it wasn’t fun. You couldn’t PAY me to go back to this place. Beware!

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in CF/​Waterloo combined. Love sitting out on the patio in the spring/​summer, the margaritas are phenomenal, and the food I had was excellent! Not to mention the salsa is perfect! I am not sure why others are harsh on the reviews I read, but as a native of the area, it has always been great!

Awesome outdoor seating. Wonderful staff. Cheap margs on Thursday. Chicken milanasa is to die for. My favorite restaurant to hang out with friends, especially during the summer on the patio! Some dishes are just ok, but any regular will find those really magic few.

So average its sad… no bien.
Nothing special except for the awesome Main St. location… and wonderful out door seating for people watching on Main.
Maybe they could just sell the business to someone that will make it worth eating at… then Cedar Falls would have a great Mexican restaurant and people could enjoy ethnic food on Main St… that would add to a great little downtown experience.

Food was average. Pretty bland for Mexican food. The big problem I had was with our waitress. She was not friendly at all and would not pick up our plates. We had to hand them to her. It was pretty obnoxious and made her seem quite arrogant.

I’d been looking forward to hitting up Los Cabos with a friend of mine from town when I came to visit a couple of weeks ago. We were warmly greeted by the manager (owner?) and seated at a table. We made our choices from the expansive menu. A larger party seated by us was just getting their food, so we waited for the server to acknowledge he’d been seated again. After about 15 minutes with nary a glance from anyone working at Los Cabos, we put our coats back on and headed for the door. The same guy who greeted us wished us a pleasant evening… as in, the SAME GUY who’d greeted us 15 minutes prior! I thanked him, and then told him we were leaving because we’d sat there for 15 minutes without anyone coming to the table.
I was so disappointed. Los Cabos moved in shortly after I moved to Chicago, and I’d heard great things about the place, but I’m not on Main Street very often on the rare occasion I come to visit, so I hadn’t yet been. Based on this experience, I’m reluctant to return.

When at UNI, I used to eat here with my family after basketball and football games when I was cheerleading. It was always good. Two nights ago, I was back in Cedar Falls and decided to stop in again for dinner. The waitress brought the chips and salsa right away. You can tell that it is made in house by the chunks and the flavor of it. Though I did think it could be a little less runny by draining it a bit. I had the shrimp diabla which came out spicy but not overwhelming. The flavor of the sauce was great and it had me spooning up more and more of it until their was none left. The rice and beans that came with it are just as good as I remembered them. I also had a jumbo margarita that could have used a bit more tequila in it. If you want to try their best drink, go with the Loco.

Perhaps my lack of delicious Mexican fare out west makes this food taste ultra amazing, but when I come home this is the first (and often only) place I demand to eat. The pollo con mole is highly recommended. Excellent prices, customer service, & food.
