I grew up during the 60’s and 70’s a couple blocks from Czech Village and have always loved their kolaches and rye bread. It’s still as good as I remember. I’m glad an old landmark like Sykora’s is still around. Polena’s meats left a while back and I miss loaf day on Saturday morning. Things change, but not for the better. At least one good place is left from the old Czech tradition. When I was a kid running around there in the mid 60’s they had polka music playing everyday throughout the whole neighborhood and you’d never be surprised to hear older Czech ladies speaking Czech as they walked from store to store. I was a wondrous place back then.

Love Sykora Bakery. 65 years ago my Father would take me there every Memorial Day as we visited my relatives in the beautiful Czech cemetery. I loved it all and though I miss my Dad who is buried there now, I always get the kolaches and enjoy one next to my Dad reminiscing my childhood favorite memory.

After our visit to the Czech museum, we hit this place up for some kolaches to go. Cute little bakery with a downstairs filled with an eclectic mix of items for sale. It will remind you of your grandmother’s basement! The gentleman(owner?) behind the counter was very nice and we left with poppy seed and raspberry kolaches. When we opened up our pastries, our car was filled with the aroma of grandma’s kitchen and tasted almost as good. Who can beat gma? This place comes close!

Great family owned bakery. Fresh baked pastries, cookies and bread. Need I say more.

The weekend of Easter I would have expected a fresher product. Again I went with the poppyseed. Again it was horrible. Why do I do this to myself?

I have very fond memories of this place! Nestled in the heart of Czech village, this bakery is a quaint little place to munch on some kolaches and sip on some coffee. Even though I don’t come here often, when I do, I always receive good customer service and delicious pastries. I had my puppy with me on a hot summer day, and they kindly offered him water and a dog treat.

Cute little bakery in the Czech village of Cedar Rapids. I wasn’t expecting much but someone told me about it so I decided to check it out. I had the poppy seed kolach(sp?) and apricot and raspberry pastries that I can’t for the life of me remember the name of. All were so good I bought a goody bag to go. The inside is quaint with a country kitchen feel. I loved that as I walked in there was a group of locals just hanging out and shooting the breeze. If you go, don’t forget to sign the guest book!

Classic small family-run bakery in the heart of Czechtown. stop by for an old fashioned cinnamon roll and kolaches, which seem to be the best sellers. They’ve got other baked goods as well, and the ladies in the store seemed very nice on my visits. This is definitely one of those places you’ll want to stop by if you’re trying to ‘experience’ Cedar Rapids in a historical context. Given that it’s right down the street from CR’s best brewery and several other decent restaurants there really isn’t a good excuse to skip it.

Stopped at Sykora Bakery this past week when I was in Cedar Rapids for the yummy kolaches. Growing up I have lots of memories of my dad and aunt going to the Czech Village to bring back kolaches for breakfast on the weekend. This time, I picked up an assortment of kolaches(cherry, apple, pineapple, poppy-seed) to bring back to my family in San Diego and they were quickly devoured! Not sure when I will be back in Cedar Rapids, but when I am, I plan on getting more kolaches.

They have pretty good kolaches, not sure were else you can find them in Iowa, after trying them in Texas I am glad I found a spot to get them. They also have the cookie kolaches which are also good. Was very pleased on both styles of kolache.

I had a cream cheese kolache and a blueberry doughnut. Fresh, tasty, heavenly. The atmosphere is neat too. The old historic ovens are still in the wall. The lady behind the counter was helpful and explained what everything was to myself and all the other patrons. She was very patient dealing with a couple elementary school-age kids and their ditzy mom. I wish it was closer to home! Parking is easy on the street or in the lot directly behind the business(accessible from the street that runs parallel to the front of the bakery).

Very disapointed with the Kolaches. The service is very good, but the Kolache selection is minimal. You will not find a sausage kolache in this establishment. SERVICE: 6⁄10 AMBIANCE: 6⁄10 FOOD: 5⁄10 PRICE: 8⁄10 UNIQUENESS: 5⁄10 OVERALLSCORE: 60 Service: Graded by the«Keep my cup full principle». Ambiance: Pretty self-explanatory Food: A high food score does not always indicate it is a place for foodies. It is weighted based upon the establishment — thus bar food can receive a high score Price: Price is graded based upon what I believe is fair value for the food you are receiving. A high score does not necessarily indicate the establishment is cheap. Uniqueness: Higher scores indicate desire to return.

This business deserves better than four stars(but five implies perfection.) I was in town for Xmas and needed a bakery that would be open on the Sunday after. My brother recommended Sykora. Czeck Village is a short drive from his house so thats where I stopped on my way to my sister’s house where everyone was gathering. The lady who was running the place was very friendly which is exactly what I would expect in a small town privately owned shop. What sets this place apart is the quality of the food. I bought several products including some poppy seed pastries that were designed to look like little hamburgers. Everyone agreed that the treats were delightful. I believe Sykora will have a few new patrons in the future coming from our gathering and I’m sure I will go back there next year to sample their eclairs.

From the moment you walk in the door you are in a great experience. The staff are SO friendly and give you all the help you need. But the pastries are amazing! It was my first time so I got a bit of nearly everything and could barely stop eating it! All of the items were rich in flavor, smooth in texture and even smell and feel wonderful! I wanted to go when I was in town a couple of years ago but they were closed. I’m so glad I went back… and will again!

I stopped in to pick up some rye bread and saw that they were selling bowls of goulash for under $ 4, so I rolled the dice and gave it a shot. This was WONDERFUL. It has nothing in common with those sad bowls of mac, tomato, green beans and ground beef that show up at every pot luck in town. This was a rich plummy stew of pork shoulder, peppers and tomato with great depth of flavor, seasoned with caraway and, I think, fennel. Either way, this is a phenomenal deal. — — — — — — — - Went back today and was told that there was no goulash today, but that there might be some tomorrow, so it is apparently not a permanent fixture for the place.

CULTURES!!! I heart the Czechs– they can do pastry. I want to marry these kolaches!!! Big ups for restoring it back to its original façade– and weathering a setback from the flood. namaste Sykora
