This isn’t great food truck food. It’s okay, and it will hit the spot if you’re in a pinch. I’m not surprised at some of the two-star ratings, but I’ll give it three due to it’s good service and large portions. What’s not so great: –the slaw is just bad –the pulled pork is dry. you need to douse it with sauce, vinegar, whatever to moisten it up What’s ok: –the fries(hard to mess up, right?) –the hush puppies(I prefer jalapeño-infused, but these are just very sweet) What’s great: –customer service. You can text your order and they’ll text you back when it’s ready. Great for if you’re at a nearby bar and don’t want to wait in line. –portions. You get a ton of food. The downside is you may not love all that food! The platters are enough to share. Don’t hate on the Olde North State, but don’t be surprised if this truck slightly disappoints you.

I haven’t experienced many food trucks, but I’ve had a LOT of bbq in my day so I was VERY excited to discover this truck in RTP near my office a few weeks ago. There was no line so I was their star customer outside whatever company they’d anchored themselves in. They were quite taken with my enthusiasm and told me all about what they do and where they’re from. I was impressed with how local and fresh all the ingredients were so this had me even more excited to try it out. I was having a larger lunch on this Thursday so I had I ordered a hot dog and the bbq plate which had a bunch of bbq, hushpuppies, and the fresh vegetable of the day — strawberries! The hushpuppies were good, but didn’t blow me out of the water. There was a generous portion of bbq, but the meat was really lacking in flavor. It was hot and fresh, but just didn’t have that«mmmmm this is GOOD» factor at all. I had a little bit of their Eastern bbq vinegar sauce, but the meat needed to be dretched to really be good and that doesn’t speak well of bbq if it absolutely has to be drenched. On the other hand, my hot dog was delicious, but those are kind of hard to mess up… and the strawberries were stupendous and rather large so that was a nice treat. As I said the friendly service was awesome, but it still didn’t compensate for the lack of flavor. Maybe I’ll give ‘em another shot another time, but not before grazing on some other trucks nearby. Should you care to track them down, You can follow them on Twitter here: @onsbbq to find their location or like them on FB:

I think this is the first food truck experience I’ve had that’s been disappointing. It started out well… no line at the food truck, surprisingly diverse menu, and quick turnaround time. I’d decided on the Flaming Pig, which is pulled pork in chipotle sauce on a bun. My two initial reactions: 1) the meat is cold 2) I don’t taste chipotle. There was a generous helping of pork, at least…

Not a huge fan of pork BBQ(BEEEEF!!), but this was tender and tasty and hit the spot. $ 5 for a BBQ sandwich, an extra buck for a side. I went with hush puppies, which were giant and nicely textured — could have used a bit more flavor though. The fries and fried okra were clearly better values — the helpings on my friends’ plates were heaping. We only went here because KoKyu ran out of food(sigh), but I wasn’t disappointed. Next time I might try the«Big Pig»($ 8) — fried pork tenderloin piled onto a normal BBQ sandwich. Yum.
