I have been to Flying Burrito a few times for lunch and my experience is that this is a good place for a pretty fast lunch. The food however, is just ok and definitely not the best Mexican in the area. As mentioned in other reviews, this is more Americanized food or «Tex-Mex«or maybe even«California-Mexican», than it is authentic Mexican. On one visit I got the Flying Burrito and was it very big as I recall, but not the best burrito I have had. On another visit I had the fried fish tacos and definitely not the best I have had in that department. The fish part was small, and had too much fry and not enough fish. The black beans that were served as a side, were only ok as well, nothing special. The restaurant area is pretty clean with tables and booths. In my times here service has always been friendly and prompt.

The Flying Burrito and I go way back, as my dad used to take me here when I was a kid. He would get a drink at the bar, and the bartender would always give me a little, plastic statue of a bull, a novelty item that came with the beer. Ever since then I’ve been hooked. While my love for the Flying B started over plastic bulls, it has since grown from an appreciation of their unique south-of-the-border dishes. Their flavors and taste combinations are very creative, using a lot of fresh vegetables and seafood inspired ingredients. I love any of their seafood tacos, but the last time I went I tried their Carborro enchiladas. They were awesome! Two corn tortillas with squash, zucchini, broccoli and carrots, smothered in green chili and cheese served with a side of rice and mashed sweet potatos(something I’d never tried before but was quite tasty!). They’ve got some good(and local) beers on tap and have an excellent outdoor patio that makes for a perfect spot to enjoy your meal when the weather is nice. Overall the Flying B might be my favorite Mexican place in Chapel Hill. Good food, good service and a relaxing, enjoyable atmosphere.

One of my fave spots in Chapel Hill. The burritos are always good, never too crowded and the service is always speedy. They aren’t the best burritos in town(that would probably be Cosmic) nor are they very authentic, but their good and have creative flavors. The Flying catfish is my favorite. They have good use of fish and vegetables in their dishes which seem to be chef created and not out of a freezer. They also have $ 2 tacos until 5pm. This is a good place if you just want some good quick food or just have a beer, they have an outdoor area as well.

I don’t think it’s a requirement for a Mexican place to serve«brunch», but if you’re gonna, don’t run out of both bacon and sausage. «Huevos Diablos» were neither devilish nor good, nor were the tasteless canned pintos upon which they were served. If «Julie» is working, make sure she’s got your table, she’s the only semblance of order the staff appears to have.

I just had to update to say I am STILL a fan. It’s been cleaned up a bit(thank BOB for that; the bathroom no longer makes me throw up a little in my mouth but it still has that Chapel Hill/Carrborro edge of indifference to it that we all know and love. My date’s food and mine were rather spicy — he has a much higher tolerance than do I for these things, so for him to say this was something. Admittedly, right there after the renovation things were a little«eh» but I’d say that it still gets four stars. The sangria especially. Tonight was my birthday dinner and I can happily and assuredly report that NOTHING has changed about that blessed balm: consistency counts, kids.

:Finally: made it back here since their renovation. I went with a group of work folk, and there seemed to be two camps — those who preferred the former worn-in version of the Burrito, and those who thought the old way was«scuzzy» and appreciated the update. They still have a bar, plus indoor and outdoor seating; but the bar has flip-flopped with the booths. The interior is painted in bright oranges and has mod suspended lighting, but everyone seemed to think it looked a little neutral, like a chain. Our server was a little patchy, but we had a big group and came right after work, so that’s to be expected. The margaritas were terrible — way too tart, something must’ve gone wrong with the mix. The menu, happily, still had most of my favorites on it and I was glad to see that the portions haven’t downsized.
