Uniquities

This is a really nice boutique. Think ShopBop, but B&M. They carry lots of the cool brands you can think of — Splendid, Joie, jeans by AG and Paige. It’s not as cheap as fast fashion, but it is pretty trendy. When I visited around mid-​late-​May, they carried a lot of loose tunics, summer sweaters, shorts, a few jumpsuits, and summer dresses short and long. The décor is bright and colorful, but the clothes themselves were mostly neutrals. There’s a sale section in back corner with jeans neatly organized by size. There is comfy seating for those who are not interested in shopping.
There was only one person working the shop when I while I was perusing. She greeted me when I walked in the door and gave me some space. After I pulled a few items to try, she came over and offered to start a fitting room. I didn’t buy anything, but did figure out what sizes I do NOT fit in AG and Paige jeans.

This isn’t a review on service as much as it is a review on a garment I recently purchased from Uniquities.
I purchased a beautiful red silk button-​up top by Joie from Uniquities about 3 weeks ago. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I understand the concept of spending money for quality. You get what you pay for. I shelled out a lot of money for this top. I saw a long future together.
I bought the top specifically for an event I was attending — an event where I was a speaker. I thought long and hard about the outfit I would wear. I pictured myself, this top, a pencil skirt, fierce heels and statement necklace. I’m typically an XS but all they had was a S, so it was roomy — hence the waist-​cinching pencil skirt. I put on my outfit and within minutes — SHOCK — the top tore along the shoulder seam and next to one button! I was not doing jumping jacks — was just putting on a necklace and doing my makeup. Based on the fabric and placement of tears, I don’t think the top is repairable without spending a considerable amount of money.
I’m super disappointed in Uniquities. I saw myself shopping here often; however, what I will not stand for is shelling over big bucks for low quality. I have tops from the clearance rack at Old Navy that have lasted longer and held up better.

I was recently given a pair of jeans from this store as a gift. I had the pants hemmed at the store. To make a long story short, it took about three weeks for me to finally have my pants back and wearable.
The reason I’m writing this review is because during the process of having my pants tailored I went back to the store twice and spoke to several associates on the phone. Each of these experiences was unbelievably unpleasant because of the service I received. Every associate I dealt with (except for the manager Jessica) was, for lack of better words, snobby and rude. I literally felt like I was Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman: not good enough to be in the store.
The only person who redeemed my experience with Uniquities is the manager (possibly owner?) Jessica. She ended up refunding the tailoring fee and shipping the pants to my home so I didn’t have to make a third trip to the store. Most importantly though, she treated me with the respect that every customer deserves.
As someone who has worked in customer service for 8 years, and retail specifically for 5 of those years, I really appreciate Jessica’s professionalism.
I’m just disgusted by the way the other associates treat their customers. Just because your inventory is high-​end does not mean that you should treat your customers as second class citizens. It certainly did not make me want to spend more money in the store.

This place is really cute and has great clothes. They are expensive though and rarely have sales.
The jewelry in the cases were very nice but I want to see a price before I ask for something out of the case in an expensive store.
I will only return if I can’t find what I am looking for in the other boutiques in the area. Sorry, I need a sale to justify my purchase.

Wow, HOLY BATMAN EXPENSIVE! I’ve been in a «shopping» mood recently, so went in for a look. This place is well-​lit, spacious feeling yet cozy, clean, etc. But $ 140 for a short, simple cotton jersey dress? Are you OUT OF YOUR MIND?!
That dress’ equally-​attractive cousin would cost me $ 35 MAX @ H&M or even Zara’s! What would I tell my bank account? «Oh, but see, I got it from this really cute local shop in Chapel Hill and it’s *consignment*.»
I don’t think so. Even if I was richer than Bill Gates & Warren Buffet COMBINED, I would not spend such a ridiculous sum of money on clothing that can be found way way way cheaper.
And let’s say I didn’t want to go for the equally-​attractive cousin, I can still find the same brand & items online for a fraction of the price. I even looked around for a «Sale» section, no luck.
I think they must cater to the crowd whose parents pay for their tuition, rent, and food. I was never that lucky and if I were, I’d invest that money and earn interest. And then use that interest to go to H&M and buy five times the amount of clothes I would’ve been able to buy at Uniquities.

The clothes are very cute, very expensive, but maybe its worth it… the reason I am giving a crappy review is because my friend was completely harassed by the girl working there. She picked up this cutely wrapped condom and was planning on buying it, but first we kept walking around the store to browse and whatnot. The employee walked up and asked if she could hold the condom at the counter for us… i mean did she think we were gonna steal it? If i planned to steal something I would pick out a cute tiny, over priced shirt, not a silly cheap condom!
gosh… but i might eventually buy something from there… like i said their stuff is cute!

Uniquities is a great place to get your designer fix without having to drive to Southpoint. I love, love, love the James Perse and C&C California shirts (so soft!). They also have an entire section of the store devoted exclusively to high-​end denim, with friendly and knowledgable sales representatives to help you find your best fit and brand. I do hate those dressing rooms with curtains instead of doors, but I’ve only ever seen a couple of men in the store (always accompanied by women) so the likelihood of being seriously embarrassed is low. Most of the stuff is pricey of course, but they do have trunk sales every so often and you can occasionally find random items that have been marked down. As Christina said, you can only get store credit for returns, so make sure you’re really committed to that thousand dollar Paddington bag before you lay down the plastic.

The only way Uniquities gets better is if it were three times bigger. It’s the only place in Chapel Hill where you can get a dress worthy of a pair of Jimmy Choos.
My favorite thing about Uniquities is that it is one of those places that you can ALWAYS find a special occasion outfit when you have a hot date and no time to head to Charlotte or Atlanta.

While I don’t shop here, I’ve been several times with many of my friends. Uniquities specializes in designer labels for women of all ages. Most of my friends come here for designer jeans, including Seven for All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, and Paige. The staff is extremely friendly, and most of them are full-​time, so you get to know the faces around here when you visit, and they also get to know you. They keep track of purchases, and are willing to call when your favorite brand is in stock. When I was purchasing a gift for a friend, the sales clerk was great at providing me a variety of options at the price range I was looking for; she even offered to try on the potential items, but I didn’t think that was necessary. Expect to spend a lot of money in here because they don’t run sales that often except their big annual sale. If you can get over the price tag, Uniquities is a great place to shop/

This is a sexy boutique that keeps designer labels on their racks at all times. The quality of their merchandise is equal to the price you pay and the excellent service present here. They have beautiful jewels and accessories to make your new outfit more dazzling and you look more dynamic. When you step out onto Franklin Street for a night on the town, you can be confident that not too many people will be wearing your identical garb. You will have truly captured the essence of the shop’s name.

I could be wrong here, but I feel like there was a time when we didn’t have multiple upscale boutiques throughout the Chapel Hill/​Durham area. And I know there was a time before it was considered normal to buy jeans that cost more than $ 100. Even in those long-​ago days, though, kids, we had Uniquities. I speak from this place of experience because I was shopping here for dresses in late 1995. I know, eons ago, right? So whether or not my history is 100% accurate, I tend to regard this place as kind of a fashion flagship in this area.
All of which is a long-​winded intro — what you need to know is that Uniquities is one of the best stores around for designer clothes both dressy and casual, particularly when you need your high-​end denim fix. Think of the brand you like best and they probably have it. The jewelry selection is excellent — not just filler for the space near the cash register. The salespeople are great as well… helpful, friendly, and fun.
The sales have been mentioned by earlier posters. I think at one point, they used to call them «attic sales», now I don’t remember what they’re called — annual closeout sales, whatevs, but yes — they’re major. As in, girls lined up to get in one at a time, stripping down in the middle of the store, set down that part of Sevens for a sec and some other skank will snatch them up major. I bought a pair of Juicy Couture jeans at one of those sales once for, I think, $ 20.
Is it goofy if I say I have special memories of this place? This should, I suppose, tell you something about my loyalty to and affection for this store. Particularly from my more financially solvent college days.
I bought my favorite, favorite dress of all time here in 2000… a blue, sparkly Vivienne Tam that I later saw on 90 210 (on Donna… ergh) and on Gwyneth, in orange, in that karaōke movie she did with Huey Lewis. My Michael Stars shirts, my first pair of designer jeans, this sparkly sweater by easel that I later saw Lisa Kudrow wear on Friends. That little black Betsey Johnson dress I bought the first week of college when I realized that a linen sun dress and a barrette wouldn’t cut it at UNC sorority soirees.
Enough from me. Go forth — and make your own memories.

This place was way too much of a temptation when I went to UNC, had no car, and lived within walking distance of its glamorous offerings. Since then, Southpoint Mall with its swanky Nordstrom store has opened and several boutiques in Durham and Raleigh are now accessible to me; but I still find myself returning to Uniquities. Luckily now, I’m gainfully employed (and can afford more than a single sock).
The store is small but inviting — it runs narrow and deep — with 3 separate ‘rooms’. The first harbors career-​oriented and evening-​out clothes (lines such as Theory and Trina Turk); the second changes seasonally (think: bathing suits, shoes, or Juicy Couture terry sets); the third is a sinfully stocked mecca of high-​end denim (Sevens, Citizens, Joes, James, Chip & Pepper, True Religion, Paper Denim & Cloth — I’d go on, but I fear I’ve already exposed my weakness). The store’s buyer never ceases to be in-​the-​know with new labels — but she manages to strike that fine balance in fashion between trends and classics. Make sure to shop the shelves as well — you’ll find fabulous (and a little more cult-​ish than the expected Botkier or Balenciaga) bags, adorning the mannequins displayed there — Rebecca Minkoff, Rachel Nasvik, Lauren Merkin, etc. They’re also my favorite for unmentionables — Cosabella and Hanky Panky.
The staff is always friendly and willing to help fetch sizes and styles or put together an outfit — however, they are also given to saying things like: «That looks SO cute.» «I LOVE that on you.» — don’t get me wrong, a little flattery goes a long way (especially on a bad hair day). But don’t get talked into a $ 300 dress with a drop-​waist that makes you look like Phillip Seymour Hoffman on a good day.
Not for the faint-​of-​heart, the dressing rooms (screened off with corded drapes) have no mirrors — forcing you to trot your designer duds out into the open store (where there’s a wall of mirrors) and invariably hear from a nearby sales associate, «Those are ADORABLE!»
Though the store rarely has sales, keep an eye on their storefront windows where they’ll post a sign in advance. Also be on the lookout for their annual stock clear-​out — usually around February and advertised in the Indy — girls line up hours before the store opens and are provided with coffee and donuts. Inside, it’s a free-​for-​all frenzy. Boxes of last-season’s cropped pants, fleece hoodies, and overstocked tissue tees. And girls grabbing up the goods and stripping down to hurriedly try stuff on. It’s almost enough to make you clutch your rosary beads.
Shop here for one of the very best selections in the latest lines (or shop their location in Raleigh, if that’s more convenient for you); but be warned: it’s addictive — oh, plus returns can only be made for store credit.

Decent denim selection. High quality, high priced clothes. Shopped here when i lived in chapel hill… LOVED THE TRUNK SALES! Ella Moss, Diesel, Seven for All Mankind, How and Wen, Trina Turk, Generra, James Perse, Shoshanna, Paper, Denim and Cloth, C&C… best thing about this place? Great service. The girls working here really help you out! It’s the place to shop for cute clothes in Chapel Hill… It’s Chapel Hill’s version of Lisa Kline. LOVE IT!
