Berlin’s for Men

I went searching for a miracle this morning and I found it at Berlin’s in Charleston. A last minute change in plans had created a need for me to get and needed to walk out the door carrying a tux that would look flawless (at 6’5″, 230 lbs and size 14 shoes no small task) for an important event where I have to give a toast. The folks at Berlins said «no problem» and grabbed hold of me like I was on an extreme makeover tv show. A gentleman measured me in no time (I suspect he could have done just by eyeballing but he wanted to be sure). First tux they brought out was perfect. Matched exactly what I had in mind despite my rather vague direction. But the best part was when I was planning to wear my own shoes and the owner Steve came over and did an all out intervention and told me he couldn’t let me go to the event wearing my shoes. He was very firm and assertive, but extremely courteous. I respected him for basically saying «hey if you go out wearing my tux, you need to be looking good because that’s MY reputation at stake». Loved it, and he was absolutely right.
I am sure I could have rented a tux someplace else in town, but there is no place where I would have gotten a better deal. I was in an out in a jiffy, the tux was superb, and the service spectacular. I would never consider renting anywhere else in town, even if it was half the price. This is the only place to go if you are serious about looking fantastic.

This place is very very very old-​school but a great shop. I first shopped here in the 80s to buy suits but I no longer wear suits but they still have lots of other types of clothing. If you want to fit in old South of broad Charleston this is definitely your store.

Nice. Very, very nice. Better selection of Canali suits than Nordstrom’s in Charlotte.
