Great fried food. I particularly liked the crab cakes. No filler and just enough spice. Save room for the hush puppies too.

Great lunch from this resto up here at Charleston! All servings are huge! And they’re pretty cheap considering they serve seafood(which can get pretty pricey). We got a bacon, cheese and ranch fries for our appetizer and trust me, their home made ranch is GOOOOOD. They were also very generous with their bacon bits and fries(very generous for an appetizer *wink wink*). Me and my boyfriend shared an entrée plate with 3 choices of seafood: fish(which was flounder for today), crab cake and shrimp(fried). They were really good and pleasing to the palette considering they’re south fried seafood(because some people don’t like their seafoods too oily). I’m a big fan of the shrimps and the fish but not so much with the crab cake(although my boyfriend who loves crab cake says they’re one of the good ones he’s had). For dessert I had their exquisite hummingbird cake! It’s a banana/pineapple with nuts and cream cheese frosting cake. It’s very very good and filling! It’s great because you can actually taste all the flavors from the ingredients that make up the cake! So I give this place a 4⁄5!

Stopped here for lunch after church. Had no idea this place existed but I’m so glad we found it! Traditional southern home cooking. I got fried catfish nuggets with collards and red rice, the husband got country fried steak with rice and gravy and collards. Everything was excellent. Staff was super nice and personable. Casual atmosphere, I definitely recommend.

Everything was great from start to finish. Service was very friendly and helpful & attentive. The restaurant was clean with simple décor and the food was phenomenal ! The flavor of everything was so so good. Me and my husband were fighting over the Hushpuppies. LOL My Crab Cakes had so much meat, it should be a crime. On to the sides… the greens, the potato salad, tasted like something my Mama would cook and she is a damn good cook ! The quantity of the food for the price was really good. I had plenty left over for round two later that night & the flavor was even better. Nice solid, southern dining experience. We were visiting family in the area during the holidays & my husband found this on Unilocal while we were out shopping. The young lady(I think her Dad is the cook) asked how we found them & I promised them a great review because it was well earned.

Was heading to a plantation but needed a lunch spot. Thanks to Unilocal, decided on this place. Great local spot with amazing food. Definitely recommend the BBQ fries. The pork has such great flavor, you don’t need the sauce.

This place was great southern food! The cook came out and was really friendly. Don’t let the outside fool ya. Try the fries with bacon and cheese. They were able to take care of a table of 9 including 5 kids easily.

We really enjoyed The Mason Jar. This isn’t 5 star dining with fancy cloth tablecloths and napkins. This is down-home southern cooking at it’s finest. First of all, the service was perfect. We were checked on often, teas refilled very quickly, but weren’t pestered at all. We enjoyed the BBQ plate with collard greens, corn bread and hush puppies. Another one of us had the chicken fried steak. All the food was fresh and tasty. And, it was very inexpensive for what we got. I also enjoyed a free iced tea because I checked in on Unilocal!Try it!

This place isn’t fancy schmancy, it’s a locally owned southern style stick to your ribs restaurant and I LOVEIT! The restaurant has cute details from blue mason jars, bluebird salt and pepper shakers, to a colorful bird mural on the back wall. My only regret is I didn’t order fried chicken! When I saw the other orders, I had major food envy! I saw fried chicken, hush puppies, BBQ, collards. If you are looking for fast food, this isn’t the place… this place is home cooked made-to-order-so-bring-your-patience. The customer service was warm and welcoming and the cook and owner came out to greet and chat with everyone once they were done cooking for the day. Great local place to put on your list. On Sunday’s, they may run out of the most popular items towards the end of the day… so get there early for the fried chicken! I know that’s my new food goal.

I’m traveling and found this place on Unilocal.Being from California I wanted authentic southern food. Holy cow did I get it! Yesterday I ate at Paula Deen’s Lady and Sons and the food at The Mason Jar is far and beyond better. Crazy delicious! Don’t let their funky location deter you. And if there is a line for a table — wait!

You seat yourself and pay up front at the register– FYI If you have a large party please call before hand the restaurant is small. Ordered fish and chips — I wish the fish had more flavor but nothing some hot sauce and ketchup can’t cure. Waitress was very welcoming overall the atmosphere is very positive.

Once again, Unilocal helped me find a pleasant surprise while out of town and exploring a new area. This place is nestled on the side of a small shopping center, don’t let the looks throw you off. Everyone is friendly and the food is exactly what comfort southern food should be. Did I mention they sell beer? Southern grilled cheese with bacon, onion and fried green tomato-this was very good and very filling. I could only eat half of it. it was nice and crispy with the right flavors mixed in. I had a casserole as a side which was pimento and cheese with corn, bacon, green beans and topped with Ritz crackers. This was the oddest casserole I have ever tried. It was a bit too creamy for me but it really did not taste bad at all. The corn added the right crispy texture to the baked buttery ingredients. Cornbread –this was not my favorite. It was dry and it tasted rather bland. I’ll opt for a different side next time. Sweet tea is amazing here. It tastes like real sweet tea and not the fake stuff other places try to sell you. It was not too sweet and hit the spot. Fried shrimp with onion rings fried zucchini /squash — this is real real fried, like mom makes. You can see where they had real chunks of fried veggies that they hand battered and fried. They shrimp tasted fresh and battered to perfection. All of their sauces are made in house like the cocktail and the tartar sauce. They taste nice and rich and never watered down. My favorite thing to do is mix both sauces. The beer selection is rather small and basic(Bud’s, etc.) but I didn’t come to get drunk, I came to gain weight and enter a happy food coma. For dessert I tried their homemade Hawaiian Carrot Cake. It was very rich and creamy. You can sure tell they made the icing and cake at home. Overall this place has a small town feel yet the décor can be tacky but again, that’s not why I came. I was treated with so much sweetness and friendliness by the wait staff and even the cook who came out to see if we liked our meal. The prices are VERY affordable and that’s highly appreciated when most places try to give you small quantities and mediocre dishes. If you have a chance, do not miss out on trying this delicious southern yet charming establishment. They have something special going on in here and it won’t be long before folks continue to spread the word. It was empty when we stopped by Saturday for late lunch, that won’t be the case for long. Trust me.

Just moved down from NC, but I’m a Charleston regular. Tried this for my lunch break and will be back again w my family. Ordered the shrimp po boy, and it was fried fresh per order. You actually felt like you were eating shrimp and not batter. Fries were awesome too. This is not where you go to save on calories. This is where you go to get great low country food that’ll leave you wanting more. Thanks Fatboys!

We stopped by while running errands in West Ashley and stopped by due to the Unilocal reviews. That strip mall has been there forever and, as other reviewers mentioned, it’s not much to look at on the outside. But in my experience, for excellent Southern food, that’s usually a good sign. The staff was friendly and the food was delicious. Some of the best fried okra I’ve ever had. Hubby had a fried pork chop, collards, and fried zucchini & squash. We both had a biscuit which was also really good. Awesome little find and definitely 5 star for when you’re looking for a solid Southern«home cooked» meal.

Pork skins were crispy and fresh Could have used a little more salt, which we added We both had the Special, Fried Pork Chop with 2 sides I loved the greens, full of flavor, fried zucchini and squash was fresh and tasty and the pork chop was huge and perfectly cooked with a ton of crispy breading. I would have liked a little more flavor, but overall a Definite

After a hectic day doing touristy things in Downtown Charleston, this restaurant was a wonderful respite for my fiancée and I. I found it because of Unilocal, saw the numerous high reviews, and loved the name! I had grilled pork chops, collard greens, and potato salad, with an order of fried okra to start. Everything was delicious, filling, and very flavorful! Dynamite sweet tea as well. This place is basically located in a strip mall, and you likely won’t be wowed by the ambience, but the staff was incredibly friendly, conversational, and even gave me an extra pork chop for free! You can tell they love being a part of this place. If you’re powerful hungry and in need of southern hospitality, drop on by!

We hit up The Mason Jar by Fatboys early this evening for dinner. We were the only ones in there to start. Cute décor, laid back environment, tvs, booths, and tables. We started with the Bacon Cheddar Ranch Fries, they are skinnier fries(not the big thick cut fries) which we prefer, the bacon was smokey(like bbq, in a good way). The husband really liked these. I was a little nervous because one of the reviews I read previously was fairly negative, but ours were hot, gooey, smokey goodness. I then ordered the Fatboy Burger(hamburger patty, fried green tomato, bacon, and pimento cheese). I don’t think«hamburger patty» really does it justice. This is a good sized burger and mine was well spiced and juicy. The cook/chef/maybe one of the owners(?) came out and asked how it was, specifically checking on the temperature, and then commented how he doesn’t like to make them too well done. I’m glad he cares about his work and my burger was probably done at about medium-well so if you want something other than that you should probably say so when ordering(they don’t ask). Everything on the burger was solid. I ordered the side of fried zucchini and it also was really good. Simple, well seasoned goodness. The hubs got the shrimp po boy with potato salad. He said the sauce had really good flavor, but he would put a little more on, as it got lost in the bun. The shrimp was well done. Overall very positive! The potato salad was good but not phenomenal, in the hubs opinion, but he prefers mustard based instead of mayo, so maybe a note to keep in mind if you share those preferences. We both got a dessert to go, I got the éclair pie, which was solid, I wish the pieces were a little bigger, but it was very good. The hubs got the yellow cake with chocolate pecan frosting. He said it was a little dry, just okay. Overall this is a place I would go back to for easy southern food In a relaxed environment. The service was also friendly and helpful with recommendations and kept us filled on ice tea and water. Also, although their location is in a strip mall, the inside is cute, and there is plenty of parking.

Great local place. We found this place via Unilocal since we wanted to try some place new the other night. It was really difficult to find even using Google Maps as it directed us about 100 yards shy of the restaurant because of the way the restaurant doesn’t front the street directly. It also didn’t help that their sign wasn’t lit. The food and atmosphere were terrific. I got the pulled bbq with sides of collards and cole slaw while my dad got the hogdog(hotdog that includes pulled bbq) and a daily special side of fried squash and zucchini. We also got dessert(a type of bunt cake as well as a cookie/brownie/pie like dessert). The waitress was very friendly and helpful as well.

Great place to stop for lunch if your car is getting serviced at Jiffy Lube right next door. I was done eating before my oil change was completed! Love being efficient. My husband ordered a chili cheese dog and I ordered the fried pork chop. My pork chop was thin, breaded to the max, and a tad dry. My husband hot dog was really good. I did like the fact that one of the owners and also the chef personally stopped by our table to make sure everything was okay. I didn’t want to be ‘that girl’ and complain about my pork chop. Plus, I was starving and ate the whole thing.

This is cute little spot. I ventured in solo. The waitress was really nice. I like that they have a small TV because there was a game I wanted to watch on. The tea was served in a mason jar as expected, I loved that, very southern. I had the fried country steak which was awesome! The potato salad was good and my rice & gravy was delicious. The only thing I could live with were the hushpuppies, I’ve tried many different hushpuppies in my last couple years down south & these weren’t impressive. Besides that everything else was great! I would deff stop by again if I went back down to Charleston.

Sometimes the best food is in the most out of the way places. This is one of those places… In an industrial strip mall. I don’t ever talk about specific foods in my reviews because my thinking is that if my review is bad, then the food is by default bad, but if my review is great, then any food that you try will be great. This is good stick to your ribs food. Great taste, and plenty of it. Price is excellent, and you get a lot for it. Bring the family, sit and stuff yourself. Service is friendly with smiles. It’s all good! Who says you have to go broke on good food? Try this place, you will take a menu home to show others. Frank G
