New Canton II

Mixed reviews. On my first try, I ordered my standard won ton soup and steamed dumplings. I figured if they could do those classics well I would give them another try. Not impressed, especially the dumplings that I found terribly doughy.
A friend recently wanted to have Chinese and we were in that shopping center so we went again. This time, my friend ordered chicken fried rice and I got their special honey walnut shrimp. Both were wonderful! As a matter of fact I am planning to get the chicken fried rice to take home for dinner this evening. Hope it’s as good as I remember.

Ate here for lunch. Had the duck and the Pepper steak. Both dishes came out within a reasonable time but the food quality was poor. The door seemed re-​cooked and hard the pepper steak was way to salty. Chef must have made a mistake and didn’t want to remake.
Service was not bad but the girl that was serving had an attitude and had a body language like she didn’t want to be there.
Price was reasonable.

A solid Chinese hole in the wall. Went for the small, yet amole buffet. About 10 dishes and soup served. $ 6.95 for Chinese buffet is pretty good. Pretty good food, hot and flavorful and attentive staff. The ambiance is the only detractor. The walls and decorations are not traditional Chinese. However, pretty good overall.

Solid food especially considering you are getting far from the city. Sauces were a little ‘off’ what I’m used to. But quality was good. Orange chicken my son had was exceptional. Other dishes were all ok.

Stayed in the area for one night and my husband and I had dinner here (dine-​in); it’s a small place, with only one woman working front-​of-​house, but the service was great, very competent and professional. The orange chicken was honestly the best I have ever had in my entire life. Different texture than anything I can get where I live, and a unique sauce, but absolutely delicious. I plan to go back on our next visit. As a final point: he left his phone behind on the table, and the server held it at her desk and immediately recognized us when we returned to pick it up. I’m very impressed by their business and especially the quality of their food.

It’s unfortunate that so many people have let their poor experience with the old ownership defer them from trying it again. I will say that this food is closer to traditional, true Chinese cuisine than it is to «American-​ized» Chinese food. It’s still not true traditional Chinese, but it’s also not the same heavy, sticky, sweet sauces on heavily battered meats. They have a very small lunch buffet and it’s excellent. The food is always very fresh. They don’t have 101 options but what they do have tastes very good, is hot and they make sure there is enough available. And it doesn’t all taste the same. My family is split, with half of us preffering to go to New Canton and the other half wanting the more western version of Chinese that you can get in Stevensville.

I recently moved into the area and was grateful to find a Chinese restaurant for carry out. I like to buy a variety of items each time and eat them over several days.
My first visit to New Canton I ordered the Singapore-​style Mei Fun. It’s a spicy, curry noodle dish with the usual types of meat for a Chinese combo dish: chicken, pork, and shrimp. While flavorful, it lacked the usual curry intensity I’ve come to enjoy with this dish. The egg rolls were done crispy just the way I like them.
My second visit, I ordered egg rolls, seschuan wontons, combo fried rice and spicy Thai beef. I was flabbergasted to open the wonton container and find my spicy wontons in… GRAVY. I have eaten spicy or Seschuan wontons in a lot of places and they have always been prepared In a hot oil sauce. And they’re typically in a delicate dough shell. These seemed more like pierogies, lots of dough, light on the filling, and the aforementioned gravy. The egg rolls weren’t as crisp this time, not a big deal. The spicy Thai beef had lots of mixed vegetables, still with a bit of crispness (cool!) and a good amount of beef throughout. What it lacked, though, was much flavor or spice. There was nothing in the dish to indicate it was a Thai dish compared to a simple stir fry of the ingredients. The combo fried rice was decent, if not a little overcooked.
Based on my two visits, I still have hope that New Canton can be an alternative to driving across the Bay Bridge to get my fix of Chinese food. I’ll just have to experiment to find those dishes they do better than others.

I have only gotten carried out here. The food is not bad at all. They have your typical Chinese menu. Nothing fancy at all. reasonable prices. in like the other reviewers said this place used to be awful, but that was a long time ago.

Not the cleanest of places to eat at for dine in. Only place in the area to get your Chinese food fix. Food isn’t too bad. Manager/​Owner is always a nice guy.

Service was ok. Food was awful. You’re better off eating a pack of ramen from the grocery store.
