LOVE, LOVE. Most recently we got the Michigan 4-Berry Cheesecake and we all enjoyed it– even my 4 year old! The pie is plenty big for 8 – 10 people, and very reasonably priced. You can’t go wrong with Achatz!

This little gem is tucked away in an industrial park off Gratiot around the 26 Mile/New Haven triangle. The hours are strange and based on the owners religion(closed Saturday, etc???) but the great handmade pies are worth the quirks. Don’t be fooled by the friendly, cute smiling cherubs working the counter, they are trained Capitalists ready to sell some pie. Ask for any specials, sometimes a pleasant surprise lurks in a fridge somewhere. The pies are handmade using good old fashioned Little House on the Prairie techniques with no artificial ingrediants. This is a blessing and a curse. Most of the pies taste great, some not so great. The French Silk and chocolate based pies have been very lardy, so I avoid those. Others pies like the coconut and banana cremes are outstanding. My favorite fruit pie is the Michigan 4 Berry. I believe that pie has won several awards. Some of the cheesecakes are good too. Free samples abound in this place so don’t be afraid to partake. If the sample tastes good, the pie will too. Be careful what pie you select because not all are«great» and worth the high price. They do sell some stinkers time to time. So make sure to cherry pick the offerings.

I was in the area today and decided to stop in for an afternoon snack. Their soup this afternoon was Hungarian Mushroom. I bought a pint and ate it at the table in the store. It was the best! I followed it with a slice of Key Lime pie. Again, their pies are the best! 10% Military discount on Mondays. Now taking reservations! $ 12 pies. Customer Appreciation Day — Friday, July 26

I give Achatz Pie a 4.5 because I have to make room for the occasional superior home-made pie right out of the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream as a 5. But for a store bought pie you are going to have look far and wide to find better. Watch the store hours on the weekends as other folks alluded to. Banana cream very good. The product is worth the price.

Yummy pies. Cannot beat their banana cream. Not cheap but worth every penny.
