This place is awful. They lied and treated my wife with such disrespect. They clearly think women are unworthy of help.
We called about a simple headlight repair. They said they had the bulb there and it would be no problem.
My wife arrived and they took the battery out of our car and then told her they didn’t have the bulb they had to get it from another store. Then she waited around for an hour for this bulb that they didn’t have. Finally she told them she had to get to work and they said «Don’t know what to tell you.» They treated her terribly. Finally after an hour of waiting around they brought the car back to her and told her they couldn’t fix the bulb and she left.
I can’t imagine lying like that and then treating a customer so poorly. They think that a woman showing up alone isn’t worthy of their attention. Like her time has no value.
I would encourage all LP families to avoid this place like the plague.

I’ve only used this Car-​X for minor service (namely oil changes and patching tires) but they’ve been extremely professional and friendly, offer some of the best pricing I’ve found (check their website for coupons), always complete the service quickly, and I haven’t had any issues with the work they’ve done. For quick maintenance, or a regular oil change, highly recommended!

Did very good work, were incredibly fair and honest about what they did and did not do, charged a reasonable price.
My rust bucket failed the emissions test. Took it to another shop where they fixed one error code, took my money, and said if it fails again then they need to replace my catalytic converter. After the check engine light clicked back on, I was a little more discerning on who I would let interrogate the second time. Car-​X said they would wave the diagnostic fee if they did any work on the car. Seemed fair so I handed over the keys.
They found two error codes. The same as the original one that the other mechanic claimed he fixed by replacing a part. Car-​X fixed it by replacing one wire — no charge. The second error code indicated there was a vapor leak in the fuel system. Apparently a difficult problem to diagnose. They did several hours of diagnostics and could not find the leak. They reset the alarms and told me if it drives for 50 miles without a problem to take it in for testing. Cost for hours of diagnostics and wire replacement — $ 0.
Well, the alarms went off again in about 3 miles. Took them some time, but ended up replacing a part in the fuel line that was leaking intermittently. I picked it up, put some test miles on it. They re-​ran the on board diagnostic — passed their sensors and then passed Illinois Vehicle Emissions tests a few minutes later. Quite a bit of work for only ~$ 250.
Overall, pleased with the work, pleased that they waved their labor charges for simple fixes.
Lose a star for poor communication — I had to call them for updates and to find out the car was ready. Otherwise, great work and would highly recommend.

I had a «check engine» light and went in for service here. I had been in there at least 5 – 6 times in the past and always had a great experience so it was a no-​brainer. This time I noticed it wasn’t the usual people and I didn’t get the usual service I had in the past but still went ahead. I was told the check engine light was due to my fuel gauge being stuck on «Full» and that I needed a new fuel pump (I had filled the tank the same day the light came on). I mentioned that and they still said it was the fuel pump. I also asked them to check a weld on my exhaust system that I had done recently to make sure it was still holding. They came back to me saying I needed a new muffler (the guy who did the weld said my muffler was fine 30 days prior). Foolishly I went ahead and approved $ 1200 in repairs anyway because I had an important trip planned where I needed the car back the next day. Two days later the check engine light come back on. When I took the car back in after my trip they said the check engine light would be from something else and I would incur new costs without even looking to see if it was the same problem. I decided to take it to a different shop and found it was a whole different problem. This shop told me the fuel pump would not have been the issue when I described what happened. The actual problem was a cheaper fix. Too boot, the new muffler is louder than the one they said I needed replaced. At the end of the day I was in a major rush and I was the idiot here. I can only blame myself for being taken to the cleaners this time. Just don’t go here, and if you do, get a second opinion.

Had a nail in my tire. Bryan had me come in and told me it would be repaired in 2hrs. Exactly two hours later, he called back and told me it was ready. I’m very happy with Car x

Had my brakes done here about a year ago. Turns out they just replaced the pads when the rotors needed replacing too. Saved me a little in the short term, but basically wasted a set of brake pads, which were shot after a couple thousand miles. This place is probably fine for small stuff like oil changes, but I just don’t trust them to fix bigger things right the first time.

I was in a jam and needed my Ford fixed promptly and efficiently. The team over at Car-​X was overly accommodating. I was getting ready to go on a road a trip, and, of course, my car started acting up. I explained my situation and they were able to get my car in within 20 minutes. Anthony called back within a couple hours to give me a reasonable estimate and the work was done the next day.
Quality and professional work. Don’t need to look for another mechanic in the city anymore.

I consistently have great experiences here. CarX already pulls up information and history when they see me pull in. Brian, manager at this location, is very friendly. Prices can vary but oil changes are well worth the deal here. They’ve also fixed several other problems over the years as my car is 15 years old. They have even done quick fixes or adjustments free of cost. I rarely wait more than 30 min for an oil change and are up front if other work will take a few hours to come back. Their communication is spot on. I’ve had my share of bad experiences with auto shops over the years and I’m glad I found one I can trust.

I brought in my car for a minor bit of work. Evidentially it was do minor they fixed it at no charge despite the large hourly rate sign.

If I could give this place –5 stars I would. I took my car in here to get my tires rotated and my oil changed. Pretty simple right? Wrong!
1. Tire Rotation: I told them to rotate my new tires to the front. Well they never did do that and I only knew because I checked by looking at the new tires before I left. I told them and the guy said that your not supposed to put new tires in the front.
So common sense tells you to inform the customer of this fact, don’t just not do it and not tell them. I also told them to rotate them to the front. I don’t care if you disagree with me. I’m the customer and its my car. I have front wheel drive! I took it somewhere else and they did it right away.
2. Oil Change: They WAY overfilled my oil. I could have damaged my engine. So I took it somewhere else to have it refilled. I got a receipt that said «oil overfilled» in bold. I took the receipt in and asked for a refund for their screw up. The guy said something to the order of «sure, we just have to run it by corporate for refunds and then I will get back to you.» That was obviously a lie by an employee/​company who doesn’t give a shit, because I of course, never heard back from him. It is only $ 30. IS your reputation really worth $ 30??? Its could have cost engine repairs!
Needless to say, I will never take my car back here again. And with all the one star reviews on here, you would be crazy to take your car there. This place performs the simplest services in the world, so no reviews should be less than 5 stars.

This was my first time visiting a Car-​X and I have nothing but great things to say about the location on Ashland and Altgeld. They were able to do radiator repairs same day without an appointment and were all very courteous. I wanted to be sure everything was working properly before I left and Brian took the car out and drove several blocks to ensure everything felt and sounded good. Would not hesitate to go back for future work.

This Car X in Lincoln Park is awesome! I’ve been coming here for 2 years now and the staff is always nice and honest, and I don’t feel like they’re selling me things I don’t need. I just took my car in and they tightened a belt for free:) Today is Christmas Eve, so I guess I got an early present! Thank you guys:)

Great experience. I had a bent rim causing vibration. They drove it once and then put front tires on back and it took care of it, instead of selling me new rims I didn’t need. Mentioned I thought I had a stripped stud which turned out to just be a stripped pignut that they replaced for free. Ended up buying 2 new tires (by choice, was about to snow) and they were good enough to put them on the good rims in front, and put the old tires and dinged rim on the back, didn’t even have to ask. Good guys all around.
Only thing they could do better is calling you with update or when it’s done, but for the service I can deal with that.

I had a very good experience here recently and, while I hope to have no more issues with my car, I would take it back here.
I failed my emissions test thanks to my engine light being on. The reason it was on in the first place is because of MCGRATH HONDA doing such a bang up job fixing it. Apparently, their idea of fixing a sensor issue is literally duck taping wires together. I had no idea, and drove my car around for almost a year with the light back on (ugh, I’m lazy) only to find out that McGrath did this when Car-​X informed me. They also explained other issues that McGrath failed to fix and screwed up. I’ll write a review of them later and be contacting them regarding their business practices.
Anyhow… Car-​X fixed this on the cheap (less money than the last place charged) just over $ 200 and they drove me to work at my ridiculously early start time of 7:30, drove me back, drove me to pick up my car the following day, and were super friendly. They even take your car for emissions testing once their work is done — I passed, I was able to purchase my state sticker, and all is well after a chaotic day of failing it on my last possible sticker purchase date. One small problem: I did have a smoke smell in my car after picking it up so I’m not sure if the person driving it or working on it smoked in it or around it or if it was on their clothes and it transferred into my car, but other than that there were no issues and fortunately the smell is gone after my weekly car wash.

I know that people’s experiences with auto shops can vary widely, so I can understand why some people have given negative reviews to this location. Today was my third visit to this Car X in the past two years — all for different reasons — and I specifically chose it based on the trust that they’ve built with me in my previous visits.
They always discuss whatever options may be available to remedy the problem, and will lean towards the more economical solution. If something’s broken & needs to be dealt with, then there’s no getting around it & you have to bite the bullet & get it fixed or replaced, but I’ve never felt pressured to buy or fix something that wasn’t necessary.
While I was there today, I witnessed an Audi owner who seemed to be a regular customer come in complaining of a groaning noise when he made sharp turns. They diagnosed it as a steering pump fluid leak around a seal. His check engine light was on, so they ran a check on that, and his battery wasn’t holding a charge. He didn’t want to deal with it today, so they topped off his power steering fluid and told him to keep an eye on the level and didn’t charge him for the visit. I realize that they’re counting on him returning to do the work there, but there was no sales pitch. They let him know what problems there were & left it to him to prioritize what he might need to address & when.
The reality is that most people will neglect routine maintenance& minor problems, and drive their cars until they suffer a major problem. If it gets to that point, don’t blame the shop on what it costs to repair it.

I had a good experience here about two weeks ago. The check engine light was on in our 2002 Volvo and they conducted free diagnostics. The manager was knowledgeable and both willing and able to answer questions I had about the vehicle and repair options. Since it was a Saturday, they weren’t able to obtain a quote for me on foreign car parts on the spot, but they got back to me the following Monday as promised. While the car was in the bay they did an oil change, charged me $ 20 and I was on my way. Coffee is a 5 minute walk away if you have to wait.

Avoid this place at all costs! I don’t even know where to begin…
I’ve spent over $ 2000 at this place with various repairs only to have to be towed from 95^th Street (very scary area) and stranded in Gary, IN (another lovely place to get stuck) due to their incompetent workmanship.
After my last repair (which was around $ 400 and should have been fixed when all the other work was being completed but they failed to identify) a guy called me about 3 weeks after the whole ordeal and explained that Darryn (the manager) charged me incorrectly and I owe them $ 35. Um, excuse me?! You billed me wrong so you want me to drive over and cut you a check… not happening. So I politely explained that this Car X will not be getting more money and they should have charged me correctly in the first place. So the man on the phone said ‘Fine never come here again’ and hung up. Terrible customer service.
I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to get their car repaired here. They do crappy, incomplete work and the manager is highly suspect.

This CarX is great. Darryn the manager seems to always be on duty, remembers my name, and never tries to screw me over.
Just went in for an oil change today (the Group-​on gods smiled on me and had a oil change groupon with CarX right when I was in desperate need of one!) Darryn and crew got me in and got me out in no time.
I’ve had some pretty extensive work: cracked radiators, transmission issues, brake problems, 15 000 mile checks — you name it, I’ve done it at this location. My car is old as hell, time to put that 2000 Gallant to rest, but I’m determined to ride it until the wheels fall off and CarX has done a pretty good job and keeping it at a maintainable level. I’ve come in with issues that required minor adjustments and they’ve always hooked me up. They will tell you straight up the things you need, and thing things you don’t. Period. Great team, great shop!

People to seem to have a good experience here, and I am sure it is fine if you get in. I rarely drive my car so (knock on wood), I dont need much car work. Just the routine oil change here and there …
Well CarX has by far the best deal (coupons on web site). I drive out to this location (I had an appointment!) and the guy told me I needed to leave my car there because it would be a few hours! It’s an oil change! I understand it is not the money-​maker as some other car repairs, but give me a break.
I left and went to the Foster location, sans-​appointment, and I got right in and was done within 30 minutes.
