Come here for greasy, yummy comfort food. We were starving and this place sounded like exactly what we wanted. We got the famous fish sandwich which came with the basic lettuce, tomato, and tar tar sauce. We also got a shrimp and wings combo with fries. Shrimp was delicious and came with a dipping sauce. The wings are very small but they were well seasoned. The only negative thing was that we waited almost 20 minutes for the food even though there was only one other customer in the store. Otherwise, you get exactly what you expect from this place — good deep-fried food.

Food was freshly cooked, which is why it takes quite a bit longer to prepare… but the food is great. The batter is great that they use for the shrimp, the catfish and the deep fried lobster. Their sides are AMAZING. Outside of my sister, this is the only other dressing I can eat. I also like their greens as well. After i ate i felt like i juat had the most unhealthy meal of the year, but i can say it was worth it. I want to come back on mondays and try their baked chicken that another Unilocaler posted that looks phenominal… And yes they do acceot credit cards… Parking can somewhat be difficult to find during work hours, but the el is ½ a block away for commuters… Definitely a good soulful meal to eat and I would definitely recommend for anyone in downtown area craving a touch of soul food and seafood. They have a good balance of both.

Great food and the service was great. It’s a bit expensive for the amount of food received.

Food is good, but service is horrible, especially the manager. He’s attitude is why I’ll never go back there. Other workers are great at customer service. I find Everytime I go in he has a problem with my order. Rice and beans… more rice than beans is what i asked for, Then it was cold. Returned it then he starts yelling at me. Wow! Great managerial skills. Oh, someone told me he always acts this way because he’s related to the ower. He was also outside of the store on the street yelling at me as I walked away. Classy guy. Not!

Came back here again and service was lousy. People who ordered after me with the same thing left before me. I had the catfish filets and chicken wings. The wings were nasty. And I was given talapia. I will not spend my money in here again. Then they wonder why we do not utilize black businesses

I love this place. I love the fact I can get Soul Food in the Loop and its good! The Soul Food placd I can remember downtown was Soul by the Pound. The food is so good here and decently priced. My favorites combo. I always order something different everytime I go and I haven’t been disappointed. I overheard many ordering Turkey Burgers, my next mission here. The staff is nice and they keep the place clean for sure. I just wish they were open on Saturday! Me and my people forget that the one factor.

I like fried things and I like lobster, but I didn’t like fried lobster as much as I thought. Lobster meat is too delicate and subtle in taste to be covered in cornmeal breading. The result is a greasy crunchy shell with some small lobster chunks inside. I felt afterwards exactly how one would feel after eating half a pound of fried lobster – sluggish and gross! I did enjoy the steak cut fries through, seasoned and crunchy on the outside, soft and tasty center. Fried lobster is crossed off my list, and do not need to try again.

Note: Hours on Unilocal may need to be changed. Went here after work at just after 6pm one day and they were closed. I went again the next week at around 5:30 and they were open. I ordered the ½ lb deep-fried lobster, which had a very generous portion of fried lobster nuggets for only $ 12.50. As mentioned in other reviews, one thing I was impressed by was how little grease the lobster had. If you’re a fan of lobster like me and you’re willing to eat deep-fried food, Coco’s is definitely worth a visit.

Fried lobster was cooked perfect. No rubberiness. Mac & Cheese was just like down home. Pretty expensive — $ 15 – 20 for a modest lunch BUT it’s lobster, it was good, and something different. Cannot give it any less than 5 stars. Would go again for an occasional treat.

I just ate it, I am actively picking at the leftover bits of food I have in front of me. I ordered the Fried Lobster, Cornbread, and Mac after reading the reviews on Unilocal. Fried Lobster — Frying lobster takes away a lot of the good flavors, it was like eating a generic fried fish. I actually thought it might be shrimp at one point. Mac — Pretty bad. I love a good homemade mac and cheese, this is mushy and bland. Cornbread — Very dry and crumbly. Steak Fries(came free) — Pretty good Coleslaw(came free) — Pretty bad, super soupy. Pretty upset with the outcome of this meal, I’ve wanted to eat here for a very long time.

First time trying fried lobster, and I’ve decided I prefer lobster not to be fried. For $ 12 I got 12 small nuggets of fried lobster, only one of which had perfectly tender meat. This nugget was also the largest piece, which means the rest were slightly tough from being over-fried(fried the same amount of time as the largest, still-tender piece). I also had a side of mac and cheese and collards: the collards were overly-salty for my taste, and while the mac and cheese had too much cheese(it was kind of like a cheese pudding with some noodles), I’d rather my mac and cheese have too much cheese than too little. This was a pricy lunch($ 20), but I might come back for the fried shrimp or fish sandwich.

Best Fried Lobster, Jumbo Shrimp, and Fish! Soul Food sides are the bomb diggedy!!! Greens were my favorite side. Portions are massive and prices are very reasonable. The seven of us had leftovers off $ 70.00 worth food and beverage. The guys in kitchen and register are very helpful and professional. Best season in Chicago off top…

I got the famous deep fried lobster, sweet potatoes and fries. The deep fried lobster was good. I’ve never had deep fried lobster before so I have nothing to compare it too, kind of similar to fried shrimp but the breading is better. The sweet potatoes were excellent. The fries were ok. Portions were very good, service was friendly.

Two things I love: deep fried + lobster. And I don’t even have to peel my lobster here! JONASAPPROVED

This place isn’t fancy but the food is really good. I get the wings, shrimp or catfish with a side of greens and mashed sweet potatoes. Yum! FYI: ALLFOODISFRIED. So don’t come if you’re watching your weight. They start cooking after you order so everything is hot and fresh. And the place has seating to enjoy your meal right away. The tunes are pretty cool. Very upbeat!

It was my first time here and all I have to say is wow. Fried lobster might be on my new top 10 list of best things I’ve eaten in a long time. I also had a fish samich and fried okra. Everything was really tasty but the fried lobster is the way to go. The people who work there are also very nice and the service was great. Such a unique find downtown. Can’t wait to go back…

If the answer to the question, «Do you like soul food?» is YES then all you need to know is this… Go to the counter and order Fried Lobster, side of Greens and Mac and Cheese and a Fish sandwich. That’s it. Go now. I promise you will not be disappointed. The fried lobster is fresh, battered and fried to perfection. Not greasy at all. I was shocked at how good this was the first time I tried it, but WOW! Greens get the greens! They sell out at lunch usually but always ask and if they have them get them. Probably one of the best fish sandwiches in the loop. Comes on a hoagie type roll with lettuce and tomato and their tartar sauce. Crave worthy. Not open on the weekends.

3.5 Stars If it wasn’t for Unilocal I would have never known about this place nor ventured to it. Such a tiny storefront you could easily miss it. Inside theres a few tables, but not a huge space. We got there around 12:30 today and there wasn’t too big of a crowd. Our meals were ready in about 10 minutes of ordering and the service was good. One of the employees even came out to check on us which was nice. I have to preference this review by saying I LOVE me some soul food, but I DONOT like fried foods. However, since there known for their fried lobster we had to try it. I didn’t really care for it :(, but like I said if you like fried food I think you will love it. They do a good job at frying the lobster because you don’t taste just breading. Definitely a plus you can still taste the flavor of the lobster. I didn’t really like the sour dipping sauce it came with either. The fries in my book though were good :) We also shared the Thursday special baked chicken meal. I really enjoyed the tenderness of the chicken. Delicious! For our two sides we got the sweet potatoes and the mac and cheese. Sweet potatoes were on point. I could have went for another side of those. However, I didn’t care for the mac and cheese. It was luke warm and just so-so. I’ve had better. It comes with a piece of corn bread too, but I just gave it to my friend(I don’t like corn nor cornbread). I was about to say we finished up lunch with a slice of lemon cake, but that would be a lie. We started lunch off with that lemon cake(sort of like our appetizer). It was so moist and the icing was really good. I also like that they have a really good pop vending machine. It was only $ 1.25 for a bottle of pop, which is pretty cheap in the city and the flavor selection was really good. Rarely do you go to lunch places and have the option of getting a grape or strawberry sunkist soda. I got the strawberry and looked around and saw others did as well. Popular drink… lol. All in all though this will be an occasional place for me. Average is around $ 12.00 a meal and that’s a bit to pricey for me at least for lunch.
