Second City’s DeMaat Theater is an intimate space about 50 seats cabaret style. The shows feature current students and grads from The Second City Training Center. When the main theaters are sold out or even if they are not, you can expect a great show… anywhere from straight improv shows, to scripted sketch shows and musical shows. The shows might not have the slick polish of the main theaters… but it is well worth the venture to see the stars of tomorrow. Ticket prices vary from 10 to 20 dollars with discounts for students and seniors. So if you in town looking for a big laugh, check out Second City’s Demaat theater on the fourth floor in Piper’s Alley. On weekdays shows generally start at 10:30pm for the night owls looking for something better than a movie after dinner, and on the weekends there multiple shows starting around 7:30 and changing every hour through midnight. So if you a out– of– towner looking to get last minute tickets to Second City check out The Demaat Studio Theater… I loved the shows I have seen there, and I have seen allot!

I have seen a few shows at Second City(all at the same theatre), but never realized there were so many options. It is like a mini-mall of sketch comedy and improv! First, we went to the main building located at 1616 N. Wells and were quickly pointed in the right direction. After arriving at the proper location(Boo-hoo…found out the Pipers Alley movie theaters closed.), we found out that there are three more theaters. WHAT?!? Needless to say, after weaving up and down various stairwells, we finally found DeMaat Studio Theatre. All the box office employees were helpful; I am just so glad we got there about 20 minutes prior to the performance began, so we were not rushing in our quest for the correct theatre. The space itself is extremely intimate. I think it sits only about 50 or 60 patrons. Next, the improv show, consisted of about eight Second City graduate students and were quite funny. There were a few lulls; but come on, they have not been at this craft very long. They performed an improv musical, Dorsal Batillion, which had its ups and downs, but I definitely got my giggle on. As for the improv game, Freeze, SWEET! Some of the mini-sketches were HILARIOUS! These students were entertaining and funny the majority of the time and there is nothing better than laughing away the trials and tribulations of life!
