We(2 random gringos who were hungry and in the neighbourhood) wandered in here mostly because of the Unilocal reviews. You Unilocal reviewers did not mislead us. Not sure if it was Doña Chio herself who served us up 2 delicious slabs of the fresh, tasty, delicious, and shockingly inexpensive mexi-gasm known as Huarache, but mother of god I wanted to hug that sweet old lady and hand her the key to the city or something. It was like the entire nation of Mexico was high fiving my tastebuds. Recommendations: The Huaraches are HUGE. If you’re average-portion eaters, like me and the fella, SPLITONE. Also, don’t be a scroogy stingy penny pincher, woman up and get all three toppings. Chorizo was magnificent, rajas were even better than L’Patron(IFANY L’PATRONEMPLOYEESAREREADINGTHIS, I STILLLOVEYOU) and the al pastor was probably the best I’ve had in the city– perfectly simmered, perfectly seasoned prime pieces o’ pork, not the third-rate gristly dumpster-meat you sometimes get. Man, I wish I lived closer. Anyway, keep making magic, Doña Chio.

OMG… fresh Huaraches made from masa!!! Fresh masa tacos!!! It just doesn’t get any better than this if you like FRESH tortillas made right in front of you. This place is TINY. they only have 4 very small tables in a space that would do better with 2. The food is super fresh. It is sort of a dump… OK, it really is a dump in a basement, but the food is outrageous. BYOB.

Ordered steak enchiladas with the green sauce. Got my order, took it home, opened it(I should’ve checked it before I left). There was no sauce on the enchiladas, the steak was on top, they didn’t look like enchiladas, just 3 tortillas rolled with cheese on top and burnt steak on top of the tortillas… I’ve never had enchiladas that look like that. Maybe thats another way of making them, but I’m highly disappointed. I prefer my meat inside my enchiladas. Also, I got no salsa on the side. I’m not happy. Will not order from here again.

Good food here. Always consistent and always on point. The only thing that stinks sometimes is finding parking. This is place always has freshly made Huaraches!

This place is legit and super delicioso. I came here with family and left feeling totally at home with how the staff was. It’s a total mom and pop restaurant with fresh and authentic cuisine. I got to check a food item to try off my bucket list: Huitlacoche. It was flavorful with a silky outside finish and creamy inside. I ordered that with my Huarache and also got their chicken tinga along with a horchata. Best horchata I’ve ever had, tasted milky and not overkill on the cinnamon. For dessert I tried the flan and that was a rather large slice(ended up splitting it with the sister) and it was pretty yummy, not amazing, but still very good. Can’t wait to come back again!

Ay Mi Huaraches Doña Chio —– Los extraño mucho!!! Can’t wait to get back home to Chicago… This will be our first meal when we get home for sure. Whether it’s Chilaquiles for breakfast, un taco for lunch, or un huarache for dinner… We love everything. Yes, sometimes you have a wait a tad longer than you would expect, but the place is small, everything is handmade, and fresh. Has the same feel as some of our favorite taquerias back in Mexico. Just an absolute fave of ours! :)

Keeping it simple: Great homemade mexican food that is actually authentic and tastes homemade. The best part, portions are more than enough and incredibly affordable.

I heard about this place because the bf’s hair stylist, a transplant from Mexico City, said Huaraches Dona Chio was his favorite Mexican place in Chicago. Neither of us had ever heard of a huarache, so we paid this hole-in-the-wall a visit. Turns out a huarache is basically a Mexican pizza, with a corn tortilla for the base, refried beans for the«sauce,» and your choice of meat or vegetables, onions, cilantro, cheese, and red/green sauce as the toppings. We tried the pastor,(chicken) tinga, and chorizo. The pastor was bland, the chorizo was very flavorful, and the tinga was fine. The red sauce was spicier than green sauce. The huarache should be eaten relatively quickly because the tortilla gets soggy from the refried beans and or sauce and then falls apart. The prices are very cheap considering the amount of food you get. We waited about 30 minutes for our food, and there were 3 orders in front of us. This restaurant is very small, maybe 10 seats, and doesn’t have the greatest eat-in atmosphere, but it’s a clean hole-in-the-wall establishment. In the future I would order take-out.

Go to Huaraches Dona Chio for some serious business. For under $ 8, you will receive a delicious gigantic huarache which literally folds over an entire dinner plate. My favorite is the huarache with two toppings, flor de cabaza(zucchini flowers) and al pastor(marinated pork). Now, the al pastor is a little different here and is more like a cross between tinga and al pastor, which results in a more stewy version. However, the sauce perfectly soaks into the masa. If you are not in the mood for a huarache, their tacos are also excellent in part because Dona Chio makes all of their tortillas by hand. And, who in their right mind does not love a hand made tortilla?

I ordered the salsa verde chicken enchiladas and I must say they were the best enchiladas I’ve had in a while definitely going back! lil hesitant in walkin in but went for it and glad I did. It is very small but very clean. Best random spot I’ve hit up by far.

I dunno why the heck I don’t go here more often, since it’s only a half mile away from where I live. But the tinga is really darn good here on the huarache! It’s hidden off of Clark and on Elmdale, slightly east of the Clark/Peterson(Elmdale east of that intersection) intersection. Tiny storefront, but it’s the last one you see before the alley, and directly west of a park. If you drive here, I’d recommend parking on one of the residential blocks slightly north of here, and walking back. The diagonal spaces just east of here and by the park are often totally filled up, for whatever reason.

As soon as I walked into this place, I felt like I was taken south of the border. The horchatas, hibiscus drank, and other concoctions all seemed authentic enough to keep a solid base of people coming back and I thought that this place must be pretty amazing since it kinda is off the beaten path but it has a ton of reviews. I didn’t know what a Huaracha was until coming here either, and they were interesting, but I am not sure they are worth all the rave. That being said, its an authentic spot with some really great vibes and some unique options you probably won’t find anywhere else.

This was pretty good! I happened to get the veggie options this day. I was taking a little break from meat. My man got the steak. His tasted way better. Once you go meat, I guess you can’t go back to being a vegetarian. I’ll try the meat one next time. Overall, though, the service was great. It was a cute like«take out» type taco place with a few tables. Overall, good experience; we were happy.

Run… don’t walk for your Huraches is what I was yelling while running to Huraches Dona Chio(I had to run there, literally, because they earlier the most other Mexican restaurants). We had a Carne Asada Hurache… What is a hurache you might ask? Well, let me tell you. That masa that apparently doesn’t sit so well in my stomach, well, that’s the tortilla and then a whole buncha other ingredients on top of it. It’s like a HUGE Mexican pizza. The carne asada is delicious! The cheese is melty. The salsas are delicious. Honestly, it’s a huge mess of Mexican deliciousnesses exploding in your mouth. The horchata is DELICIOUS! Not too sweet… not too whatever else… just perfect! I wish they stayed open later… or maybe I should start eating earlier. Either way, Huraches Dona Chio is great, the staff is SO nice, the food is pretty damn good, and the horchata is the ‘ish.

This was probably a basement apartment at one point — you have to step down a few stairs to get to it and it’s in an otherwise residential building on an otherwise residential street. You’ll turn down the street not thinking you’re going the right way, but you are, so don’t worry! This is impossibly tasty food in impossibly huge portions for a fraction of what it should probably cost. Had we ordered one huarache al pastor(for two people), that would have been more than sufficient. A masa cake that takes up a whole widescreen oval plate, covered in spicy pork, cheese, crema, onions, cilantro, and green sauce, it seems to swell the more of it you eat. Just spicy enough to make your nose run without making your lips and tongue burn, it settles at a medium sizzle. But we knew not the massiveness of the portions before we ordered, so we also ordered the chilaquiles, which, despite my general dislike for steak, got me all filled up with tasty blackened but tender steak pieces, beans, soft tortilla chips, and that same spicy green sauce. As if that weren’t enough, we had horchata and agua de mango to drink. This is one of the only not-too-sweet horchatas in the area and I think they used champagne mangos in the agua! Bring a friend, feed the both of you for $ 5. (Quick tip for the small-bladder-havers like me: the sign says there is ‘no baño publico’ but if you ask, they’ll let you use it.)

When I was around 9 or 10, I was enamoured with huaraches, a type of woven Mexican sandal that was hip in the late ’60’s/early 70’s. My parents got me a pair in response to my pleadings, and they ripped up my tender girl feet. After that, I did not think or speak of huaraches until yesterday, when my love affair began anew. My brother and SIL found this little joint. Yesterday afternoon, feeling peckish from lack of food, the Greens picked up a six of Schlitz(taste the cheapness, ‘cos it’s BYOB!) and we all headed here. OMG. This is a palace for my cheap, broke ass. The food is unbelievably inexpensive and delicious. I had only $ 5 in my wallet, and that was enough for what I ate — or maybe I stuck my brother with the rest of the bill. Anyway… They serve huaraches here, which I had never thought about eating until this day. They look like a Mexican pizza, served on a giant corn tortilla. I am partial to flour tortillas myself, but these were delicious, so I happily consumed. I got the al Pastor — spicy pork, yum — with everything, and green sauce. YUM. This is the delicious Mexican food that I left behind in LA. Take that, overpriced Topolowhatever! A giant, pizza-looking affair that I was only able to finish about 1⁄3 of. As I write this, I’m noshing on same for breakfast, and I still haven’t finished it all. That’s ‘cos I’m a damn petite flower, but still. .. it’s a lot of food, for what. .. $ 6? The meat was delicious, juicy, well seasoned. Green sauce, cheese — and I smeared a little of our guac over the whole creation, between swigs of Schlitz. Mmmm! That’s eatin’. We were the only gringoes in the joint on this day, the rest of the people were families with kids. An adorable feisty little girl ran squealing with joy around the restaurant. Cuuuuuuuuute! We had a cute, friendly waitress, quick service in a spotlessly clean little storefront, tucked in a residential area of Edgewater. My broke ass will be back, living large on my frugal fashionista budget. Yum! That’s how I like it!
