Kumon Math and Reading Center of Chicago – South Loop

We have two children, a 1^st grader and 2^nd grader who attend the Kumon South Loop site. I like the discipline Kumon teaches them as kids are taught to sit, be quiet and work hard to try to figure it out on their own. When they finish and take it up to one of the teachers, they will give guidance if answers and wrong and send them back to work alone. It builds a discipline to not get finished but to get it done right and for self ownership of study. I begin to implement these minor techniques for support at home and have seen big difference. I also like that the lessons are 15 – 30 each, so concepts are taught in meaty but small pieces. Most importantly, both of our children have progressed strongly in their reading levels since starting.

Ok so I have to update you. So I decided not to pull my son out of Kumon. Since he finished the division level he has progressed leaps and bounds. I guess he just really struggled with division, and they litterly drilled him until he got it. Kumon is really an enrichment program not tutoring. So if you put your child in the be aware that he will not get one on one tutoriing. What your child will get is the tools to advance at his or her level.
I have a 12 year old son that started to struggel in math. I heard from Kumon a friend who takes her son there, The rates are reasonable $ 100 per month per subject. The two subjects offered are reading and math. I really wanted Kumon to work out for my son. So what happens at Kumon is your child will take an inital assesment. It turns out my son was behind in math as I suspected. So pretty much you go in twice a week and they give you work sheets for the whole week, Parents are given an answer book to check the work sheets, I got the impression that Kumon is more beneficial to children who start out at a very young age, I’d say 2−3^rd grade the latest. I had my son in there for 6 months and it just became more of a struggle. So finally I decided to pull him out and try one on one tutoring. like I said Kumon is a great concept but it really is something that needs to be started at a very young age,
