Undoubtedly shorshe hilsha was my first pick; it was good !! Place needs more ppl. There was only one person who was doing everything. He was very nice. I felt bad for him doing everything by his own. Also need more marketing rework. Food is promising but owner needs marketing help.

Excellent authentic Bengali food! Really reminiscent of eating in. Dhaka. Lots of fish choices, and everything is exceptional. Plus the staff is helpful and friendly, even if you dont speak Bangla. definitely try the paratha, very enjoyable.

The best South Asian desserts in Chicagoland. Period. I haven’t been able to find any other sweets place that makes fresh mithai every other day. And is honest enough in informing what’s fresh and what isn’t. Try their Gur Saundesh or Kaala mawa. Just delicious bengali mithais. I haven’t tried their Bangladeshi food yet, but can definitely vouch for the sweets.

This is a very nice restaurant for east indian or bangladeshi people. They serve very good fish curry. We ordered hilsa fish, rohu fish curry which was too good. Same time prawn(chingri) curry was average and chicken pulao/mango lassi were horrible. But i would recommend definitely for fish curry. Oh yes, sweet(desert) were too good there.

I don’t know if this place is authentic or not, but the food is good! We ordered way too much — cabbage, goat curry, beef taheri, eggplant, and fish curry. The beef taheri is similar to a biryani, but seasoned with whole cloves, cardamom pods, and peppercorns(and probably lots of other stuff I couldn’t identify), and very satisfying. The goat curry is assertively seasoned and delicious. This place is definitely a keeper. I’ll be back.

I came here last week with a Vegan Meetup group and was very impressed. It was my first time eating at this restaurant and my first time having Bengali food, in general. Since I haven’t ordered from the regular menu, I can’t speak to that. But everything they prepared for our special event was delicious(see the menu they served us below). The service was also great. I’ll definitely be back! Here is the menu the chef prepared for us, buffet style for our special event: Appetizer: –Vegi Shingara, Bengali version of veg samosa Rice Dishes: –Peas Polao, aromatic Basmati rice cooked with peas –Bhuna Khichuri, long grain Basmati rice cooked with lentils, spices and herbs — a taste of Bangladesh Flavorful Curries: –Dal Shag, spinach with moong dal, a lentil also known as green gram –Daal Bhuna, yellow lentils cooked with garlic, onion, coriander powder and herbs –Pachmishli Sabji, Bengali mixed vegetable curry –Dharosh Bhaji, okra diced and sauteed in a special mix of spices, onion, tomato, and fresh green chili pepper

This is the only place that has authentic Bangladeshi food in town. Although I am not really familiar with the area, as a tourist after trying out few other desi restaurants at Devon I must have to say this one beats them all. Good job Mithai you guys nailed it. Very good customer service to top it off.

Incredible authentic Bangladeshi restaurant. They have all the traditional dishes — elish(hilsa) fish, chotpoti, multiple types of biriyani, kitchuri, etc. Food was piping hot and delicious which hit the spot on a cold day. The folks here are hella nice and the place is absolutely impeccable. Can’t wait to get back and sample the rest of the menu.

I dined at Mithai Restora with my bud on a Friday evening. This place looks like a good addition on Devon Avenue. The menu proclaims«authentic Bengali foods and sweets» and the place features food from that region. We walked in to the low-key establishment and wondered what to do next. Fortunately our host was very pleasant as he patiently answered all of our questions as we pointed to practically everything behind the counter. They had a big selection of seafood specialties(they seemed very proud of the hilsa fish, and a lineup of whole lobster-like prawns) but we did not choose from that side. We both had the kachchi biriany, which is apparently a mainstay dish in Bangladesh. My bud had the full portion and I had it as a side dish. The rice dish is loaded with tender pieces of mutton, some pieces leaner than others. My main course was a serving of khashi rezala, a curry dish with mutton that was fairly spicy(for me anyways) but manageable. Some of the meat was on the bone, so it took a bit of work to eat around the pieces of bone but it was quite tasty. After polishing off our food we then were like kids at the candy counter, figuring out what desserts to try out. We chose three selections, and they were kind enough to cut each piece in half so we could try them out easily. They even threw in a bonus dessert, with a lemon yellow color and a moist interior(surprisingly saturated like a tres leches cake) and lemony flavor to match. We both like the sweeter selections a lot, especially the oblong shaped and honey-soaked kalo-jaam(we savored this one so much that we each bought a box of them to go). Although we seemed to be the only diners that evening, a fairly steady stream of folks ordered to go. Be adventurous and try out Mithai Restora — point at a few delicious food items to try out.

My first time in a Bangladeshi restaurant, and I couldn’t be happier. I went there with a bunch of friends, including one from Bangladesh who recommended the place. Great food and very friendly staff, everything was just delicious! –The Bangladeshi music playing in the background also makes the whole experience more authentic. Also we ate a lot of delicious things for $ 13 each. I’d definitely recommend this place to anyone

I’m from West Bengal, a state in India bordering Bangladesh(The state of Bengal was divided to form what used to be East Pakistan and later became Bangladesh). Bangali(aka Bengali) food is not as brutalistically spiced as ‘Indian’(Punjabi, adjusted for western tastes) restaurant food. It depends on high-quality ingredients and more subtle use of appropriate spices and cooking methods that vary depending on the dish. It was nice to find Bengali cooking in Chicago, but our experiences were mixed. Clearly they are making an effort, and I hope they will improve steadily. Currently it is a somewhat amateur production. We Indian Bangalis say that our cousins across the border emphasize meat too much, and so have lost the great Bangali tradition of vegetable cooking. Indeed the vegetable dishes were oily, the fried potatoes and bitter melon soggy and soft from sitting in oil. Most Indian-subcontinental food stands up well under steam table /heat lamp treatment, but fried foods do not. The vegetable shingara(samosa in other languages) had a nicely-done filling with cauliflower and potatoes(would be perfect with peas), but the crust was stale. The daal comes for free, and it is definitely worth what you paid for it.(There is a great Bangali tradition of many kinds of daals, but none are in evidence at this restaurant.) Although I have had quite a few hamburgers in my time, eating beef cooked Bangali-style was a bridge too far, so I stuck to the fish, and the fish was very good. As others have noted, there are bones in the fish — eating with ones hands is safest. The helpful staff will recommend specific types of fish(eg. boaal) that have almost no bones. The fish(frozen fish from Bangladesh) is authentic and of excellent quality; the cooking was traditional and very good. However, multiple fish dishes were cooked in the same yogurt-based sauce, which is not ideal. Each dish should be distinct from all others. The ilish(hilsa) was cooked in mustard, a traditional and distinctive preparation, but it was one smallish piece of fish for a rather high price. Some of the other fishes come in much larger pieces for the same(high) price. Apparently they make their own sweets. The ones I tried were good and fresh, way better than the fossilized junk they sell elsewhere on Devon, but(understandably) not up to be best sweets back in Kolkata(or, presumably, Dhaka). Availability of items is currently somewhat limited during the week. One the weekends, when Bangladeshis come to Devon to shop, there is much more choice. The restaurant should revise their menu so they don’t promise what they can’t deliver. There should be a small menu of items that are available at all times, supplemented by specials. Don’t bother to order over the web, because some/many of those items listed will not be available. Note to a previous reviewer: there is no lamb, repeat no lamb, in most of the Indian subcontinent, because lambs have wool coats and would not survive in the heat. Mutton is and always has been goat in the subcontinental context. Indian restaurants started serving lamb in the west when goat was not available here, and continue today because customers have come to expect it. Mithai is an authentic Bangladeshi restaurant, perhaps too authentic to succeed in the US but we shall see.

It is great to have a Bengali addition to Devon. I loved the emphasis on seafood and sweets available in one location. There is not a lunch buffet as advertised– you order ala carte off the menu. However, the food was dropping in grease and oil enough to overwhelm any good flavors in the sauce. By the time the food was served, the gravy had already separated and there was a solid half inch or orange oil on top of the food. Not appetizing.

It’s been sometime since Radhuni closed down and we were dearly feeling the absence of a Bengali/Bangladeshi restaurant in the city. Then suddenly one day one my friends posted about Mithai in facebook and I immediately visited the restaurant with my wife(and we recognized the owner from Radhuni 3 years ago). Food was awesome! It’s very authentic Bengali food. The food was of very high quality. The fishes were fresh and the sweets were soft. And although this place is slightly on the expensive side, it is totally justified by the high food quality. We had rice, lentils(dal), fried potatoes(alu-bhaja) and two fish dishes. Each and every one of them were superb. It was a little bit late in the evening, and the cook came out of the kitchen and greeted us. We had a nice a conversation. Few tips for the restaurant: Although the fish dishes are awesome, the gravy don’t have too many varieties, except for Hilsa. Hope to see more types of fish-gravies(jhol) in the future. Unfortunately, we are going to move away from Chicago. But we will be visiting every month and we shall make it a point to give Mithai a visit.

My husband and I just finished a meal here with three of our friends. It was quite an experience. You have to order at the counter although you don’t pay until you’re done eating. It got confusing at the end because the waiter had trouble remembering what we had ordered. We started with an appetizer of «Fuchka» which was delicious. Unfortunately it went downhill from there. My husband ordered Kachchi Biriany, a rice dish, with«…marinated mutton/lamb» as described on the menu. He was served overcooked rice mixed with pieces of bones that had a small amount of goat meat attached to them. He explained to the waiter that he had ordered mutton/lamb and was then told by the waiter that mutton means«goat» in Bengali. Oops! Lost in translation! I had ordered Tehari. When my husband was served his dish I asked for my food and was told that the restaurant had run out of the dish that evening. The waiter seemed confused that I didn’t know that. It seemed that another one of my friends had ordered Tehari and was later told that it was not available that evening. No one had passed the word on to me! By this time 45 minutes had passed and I asked for another order of the appetizer, Fuchka, to have as my dinner. Too bad! They had run out of that too. At the waiter’s suggestion I ordered another appetizer, Moglai Parata. It was o.k. but just o.k. My friends fared no better. One of them ordered fish and got chicken. Another one ordered a vegetarian dish, «Labra,» and found it too oily and lacking flavor. One person who ordered fish said it was good but filled with bones. The rice and the Naan were bland. Most of the food needed more seasoning. On the plus side the diet Pepsi was tasty. At some point the manager came over and asked how we were doing. I explained that I had ordered Tehari and Fuchka and neither dish was available that evening. He said the waiter had made a mistake and he would get me another order of Fuchka at no charge. My husband told him that his Kachchi Biriany had contained mostly bones and the manager also offered him another serving of that at no charge. Ten minutes later he brought out a new serving of Fuchka. This did not taste like the one we had eaten earlier. It tasted as though they had thrown something together which resembled Fuchka. The waiter came back a few minutes after that to apologize. The Kachchi Biriany that was promised to my husband had been given to another customer by mistake. I can’t begin to describe how relieved we were. The people working there seemed so sorry that we didn’t enjoy our meal that I felt bad for them. However the food was mediocre, the prices were way too high and the service was disorganized. I am astonished at the five star reviews that this restaurant has received. Did we go to the wrong Mithai Restora?

The only authentic Bangladeshi restaurant in Chicago. I am a sucker for their«Murog Pilaw». Their goat curry is a must have! I wish they had more selections for sweets but whatever they have is still pretty great!

My husband is originally from Bangladesh and he was very happy to finally find a restaurant from his country. it’s a cafeteria style restaurant, so you get to choose the food from the counter and they serve it to you a la carte. We had the Vegi Shingara for appetizer. We ordered Kachchi Biriyani, Hilsa fish with mustard seeds and King Prawns. The Hilsa fish was fantastic, albeit very bony, so be very careful when eating it. The biryani and the Prawns were great as well. It reminded me of the food I had when I visited Bangladesh with my husband. It’s very authentic and not dumbed down for western taste buds. The food is very flavorful and aromatic and unlike Indian food, each dish is completely different from the other. We were so stuffed that we didn’t have the space to try the desserts. We will definitely be back there again soon.

We were driving along Devon when we found this restaurant. My husband had to control himself as he couldn’t believe they finally opened a Bengali restaurants. Because we had dinner plans that day we made a date to come for lunch here the next day, The food we got was all delicious, a must try for any foodie as this is not like the rest of the Indian/Paskistani restaurant menu. It has some of the best fish I’ve have, the sweets were good too. The staff is very attentive. A must go for any Bangladeshis’ or Bengalis’

I went in here couple of times. The first time just on the second day of their grand opening. I had Kacchi Biriyani — which was flavorful, but over-priced in my mind and quite dry. Sweets were okay that day. I decided to give them a try after a week or so, this time they got it right. I had Tehari, which was very well-cooked and as close as you can get to the authentic Bangladeshi version. Among sweets, chom-chom, mouchak were excellent. I have heard from others that the Morog Polau is good as well(will try next time). All in all, good dine-in services and tasty authentic Bangladeshi foods. I have taken one star away for being slightly over-priced(all items, specially Kacchi) and dry Kacchi Biriyani.
