Although I had hoped to really like Mixteco(BYO…in the neighborhood…), my husband I were incredibly disappointed. We started with the guacamole, which ends up is pre made. Guac comes refrigerator-cold in a ball in the middle of a plate. Even the waiter didn’t hide the pre made fact. Chips were just OK, salsa and guac were bland. Shouldn’t award-winning Mexican places have good chips, salsa and guacamole at a minimum? My husband had the cochinita pibil for his entrée. He said it was pretty average. I had the camarones(shrimp) dish, and I might go so far to say it was the worst dish I have ever had at a Mexican restaurant. It’s hard to describe, but I almost wouldn’t be surprised if(like the guac) it was all pre-made and sitting in a vat in the back and just warmed up. Regardless, the taste was really off. I had two bites and was done. The waiter was kind enough to take my dish off of our receipt. We won’t be back — sorry, Mixteco!

After arguing over where we’re going to dinner all night we decided to pick this place. And I’m glad we did. I had the camarones which was absolutely delicious! And he had the lamb and mole which he loved. The only thing I didn’t care for was the ceviche it was only okay. Now remember this place is BYOB which we decided to top dinner off with a couple of modelos thanks to the liquor store across the street! I’d love to come back here and recommend it to others. Oh and the presentation of the food is always gorgeous!

Although I had made a note to try this place it wasn’t quite what I was expecting — it’s both a little more upscale but also a lot tastier than I thought. The carne asada is excellent(it’s a nicely-cooked ribeye steak), we had multiple distinct and interesting salsas, some unusually good black beans, good fresh tortillas and fresh tortilla chips; grilled onions were a nice touch. And on a random January weeknight the atmosphere was unusually cheerful and inviting, thanks to the colored walls, happy patrons, and helpful but unofficious staff. If it were my neighborhood, it would be my neighborhood restaurant.

Dined here 3 other times. Service has taken a turn for the worse. Menu seems to have fewer options and not really that amazing for $ 20 – 24 per entrée. Our server was amazing at our first greeting tonight and then seemed annoyed with us after asking for more chips and salsa. They also charged for a second serving of chips. BYOB is their saving grace. Will not be back. Looking for a new Mexican recommendation.

We had heard good things about this restaurant and decided to check it out with a large group for a friend’s birthday. The service was great and they were highly accommodating with an 18 person party. Definitely recommend making an early reservation(6pm) for big groups, as there was a group waiting a decent amount of time for our seats. Another plus is that it is BYOB, which is a money saver for big groups. Note: you can only use a max of 5 credit cards. Overall, I was pretty disappointed in the food choices. I got the lamb dish, which was pretty good but the meat portion felt minuscule. I had to chew on the bones to try and get more meat. I’d expect a lot more for a $ 25 dish. Others ordered the carne asada and had OK things to say, but I personally didn’t try. Just know in-going that you will be paying a bit more than your neighborhood Mexican restaurant where you stick to tacos, burrito, enchiladas, etc.

This was a great BYOB place. We went on a Saturday night, without reservations, and luckily got in because another party didn’t show. We had no idea it would be so busy, call first! Our server Miguel was at our table before our coats were even off, greeting us and opening our wine bottle. The food was wonderful, and came out very quickly. I recommend the guacamole and calamari for appetizers. The only thing that keeps it from a 5 star is the space. It is a tight fit in there, and with it being so busy, you feel like you are on top of the next person. However, it won’t keep me from going back.

My wife and I live right down the street from Mixteco, and love it. If you’re looking for a phenomenal authentic mexican restaurant that won’t break the bank, then this is the place. You literally can’t go wrong with any of their menu items. It’s also BYOB which is a huge plus!

I walked into this place not prepared for it to be upscale casual with a strong but limited dinner menu of appetizers and plates in the low to mid 20s. The chips were unevenly fried but both the green salsa and my friend’s mole sauce were very well done as was my grilled mahi mahi covered with a riot of seasonal vegetables and crispy onions. I think your experience of this place depends on what you’re looking for — probably a good date night spot.

Go here and eat amazing food. Corn tortillas made seconds before they’re served to you. BYOB. Fish tacos that will knock your socks off. It’s casual, it’s loud and the flavors are outstanding. No Tex-Mex here, so don’t expect a bigger-than-your-head burrito.

Had a great experience as a first-time diner here. Went on a weekend evening with a reservation. There is a front and back dining area. The back was louder/more vibrant; whereas the front seemed better for a date or to be able to hear conversation better. We sat in the back area which we enjoyed. A great spot for groups, and there were several groups there celebrating various occasions. With the BYO option, I will definitely return! We had the lamb entrée(mole was really good!!) and the tacos al pastor. Even though there are just two tacos, it is more than enough food and loaded with pork. They also give you chips and a good salsa upon sitting down for free. The experience was overall quite enjoyable and look forward to returning to this neighborhood spot.

Sunday night + friend’s B-day dinner + a few bottles of wine. Reservation was at 7:30, we were all late, not proud just stating the facts. We ended up at the table at 8:30 and they close at 9, but they were super nice and accommodating. The food is super good, I had the camarones enchipotlados and they were really good, they come grilled on a rich creamy chipotle sauce, with grilled zucchini and rice. I also tasted chicken en pasilla sauce and it was very good as well. We shared a few appetizers. Ochepos were the fav, delicious, flavorful and fresh, calamari on the other hand, not so much. My only complaint would be the portion sizes, specially the appetizers. The ochepo was this little thing on the plate. I know is fine dinning but don’t push it. Portions are a little better on the entrees. It is BYOB, which is cool, specially because prices are a little higher than other places of the sort MG, good food, cool service, small portions

Cheap BYOB Casual Mexican Mixteco was able to accommodate our large group of people in one of their packed rooms. The atmosphere is very casual, but somewhat pictoresque. I enjoyed the freshness of the ingredients and the simplicity in the preparation of most dishes. Also, the bill was very reasonable. Recommended for large unpretentious dinners.

Creative Mexican gourmet food, excellent service, warm welcoming ambience at the perfect price point for frequent visits. BYOB and takes credit cards. Easy street parking! Use Open Table to make a reservation. Mixteco is very busy. Brunch only on Saturday and Sunday. Dinner Tuesday thru Sunday.

Owner in the house — joy in the tummy. This guy cooks with love and passion. Chef rotates the menu frequently to keep things fresh and vibrant. They run a clean and professional place with some cool paintings on the wall. The best tamales in the city and the fish tacos are delicious. Did I mention it’s BYOB? What are you waiting for?

We went with a large party and the place was packed… It was loud, I’ve had more room at the movie theater for seating, the bathroom faucet was broken, the ceviche tasted old and off, the room was incredibly drafty where many were complaining about it, the service was very slow and inattentive, and it was the driest pork chop(hockey puck) I’d ever had. I really enjoyed the guac. I would try to find some place else unless you are just there for the guac.

Very cute little BYOB Mexican restaurant in Ravenswood. I had a great experience here. Service was friendly and prompt, food was outstanding, and prices were very reasonable. Menu favorites included the Sopes Nortenos and the Quesos Fundidos Del Mar. Everything else was fantastic. The Calamares al Ajillo was great but was lacking in actual calamare, which was a bit disappointing. Also, we really wanted the flan for dessert and all they had was coffee-flavored flan, which was kind of random, so we had the Pastel de Tres Leches instead, which was fabulous. All in all, it was a fantastic experience and I will definitely go back here.

How is it possible that I have been missing out on this gem for all this time? And byob to boot? Great service… like really good, and delicious food ! Really nice vibe here as well. Our friends got a tamale, which was good. Nothing special, but good. They got the pork carnitas dish(I definitely am not calling it the correct name, but it’s a menu staple that never leaves the menu although the other selections change monthly). They tore that meat up!!! It was so tender, flavorful and delicious! We got the shrimp, pineapple, mushroom cheesy appetizer, again the name escapes me, but WOW was it delicious!!! So super flavorful. I was really surprise at how packed with amazing delight it was! We also got the veggie enchiladas. I loved the verde sauce and the veggies were really fresh and tasty. For dessert we got tres leches and coffee flan. Money! So delicious. So glad we paid Mixteco Grill a visit!

Delicioso! Love the atmosphere of this place and the food is delicious. The servers are very friendly and quick to offer suggestions of their favorite dishes. I’d suggest everyone in your party order something different and then share family style. The servings are generous so you’ll have more than enough for everyone. Started off the night with some calamari. Not fried, it’s legit. It was marinated in olive oil and lemon. Very good. We ordered trucha rellena and he borrego en mole negro(that’s garlic marinated trout and wood grilled rack of lamb). So good. The lamb was cooked to perfection. You could slice it with a butter knife. The trout was stuffed with mushrooms, ricotta cheese and spinach. Sounds like an odd combo but it was very flavorful. I’ve saved the best for last. We shared the crepas de cajeta. Crepes with goat milk, caramel, pecans and plaintains. I think we practically licked the plate clean. Definitely order this! This restaurant loses one star because it took 3 days and multiple washings for the smoky grill smell to leave my clothes, jacket and hair. That’s some strong smoke.

I love when restaurants use Open Table — it just makes the task of reservation making so much easier. Party of 12 for 6pm on a Saturday — perfect! They called me the day of to confirm — very nice. Our group showed up at different times, all within a 30-minute span. They sat us as we arrived, and didn’t make us wait for the entire party to show up, which is good, because there really is no place to hang around and wait inside. I’ll start with the very good. 1. Service. Service was spot-on. Our waiter(Juan) was amazing and attentive and friendly and just really great at his job. 2. BYOB and no corkage fee. We brought sangria, red and white wine, and margaritas. They gave us glasses and tons of ice, and a bucket to put our wine in. 3. Food. The food is really good. It is more modern Mexcian and you may think the price point is high, but really about $ 20 a dish. The quality and presentation is wonderful. 4. The smell. The incredible smells that hit you as soon as you walk in the door. The just o-kay. 1. The chips & salsa. Just not that great. 2. The acoustics. The place is loud — very, very loud. 3. They made it clear that they wanted us to leave as soon as the bill was settled. Which, I do get because it was after 8pm and they needed the tables. But we were still drinking and talking. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this restaurant and I will be back.
