Best ever filter coffee in the USA. I have tried Saravana Bhavan in 4 different states here and this place beats them hands down just with their coffee. The south Indian menu is just amazing and the taste just reminds you of namma chennai. You should come try this place if you are visiting g Chicago and are craving some South Indian food.

Terrible food! I feel sick after eating there. I have never had such bad tasting Mysore Masala dosa! All I would say is keep calm and do not try dosa at this place!(atleast not Mysore masala) We also ordered the vegetarian thalli and the rasmalia tasted like a bad paneer ball. We could not eat more than 1⁄8 of a spoon. Service was okay. But my rating is based on the food experience, which was absolutely crap!

There has to be better South Indian in this neighborhood, but this place was at least serviceable. Two of us ordered: — Special Rava Masala Dosa — composition was correct, but it was lukewarm and the crispiness faded quickly. Sambar was decent, coconut chutney lacked kick. — Veg Thali — again, it looked right with good assortment, but didn’t taste great. All the dishes that should have been hot were again lukewarm. Chapati was tasty, but that’s hard to screw up. — Masala teas were tasty Service was mostly indifferent, but at least pretty fast. We expected IST treatment but we were in and out in about an hour, not bad. If I make it up to Devon again, I wouldn’t go back here.

this is a message to the restaurant directly. Please post accurate hours of business. i have now gone to this place twice only to see they were not yet open on the weekends. the food is better than udupi across the street, and space is larger, so not as cramped, but they do a very bad job of posting accurate hours on the internet or on a sign at the location.

The food took long to come out even though we were the only ones in the restaurant(we gave it the benefit of the doubt). The uttappam was so thick and the rice to vegetable ratio made it seem like a little bit of frozen vegetable was just sprinkled on top. The chana masala was not horrible but definitely sub par. The lassi was great but I really wonder if you can mess that up. Overall a wasted 50 meal.

Nice people. I was there at least twice in this one month. They treat you good. One of them could be a owner or a manager when they make a mistake –they came and say it was his mistake. Very nice of them. They were keeping the food in the next table– but when you comment on it-they really care and take care of it. Some of their Dosas are excellent. They have a T Shirt similar when i was in Germany to change everyone to Vegan:) Just kidding –they call Dr. JK Happy Deepavali and this is one of the good ones to visit in West Devon Street. Bus # 155 takes you there– it goes through the entire Devon. You should ask them to go to Kedzie– that’s one takes you there. I was there on November 6th2015 recently on a Friday.

Best Indian restaurant in the city. I was looking for an Indian restaurant like this one. My Indian gf was actually holding back on me. You can decidethe level of spice. I got the the gobi manchurian. It was so good. It is the cauliflower deep fried in a gravy sauce. The paneer makani was also great. It is an Indian cheese cubed in a spicy tomatoe sauce. Baingan bharta was great. It is a chopped up egg plant with wonderful spices. This place is known for its dosa. I met the owner. He’s a wonderful guy. He offered me a Dosa as big as the table! O my! I said we may need an army to finish it. Panner kulcha was awesome along with the curd rice. Yuuumm!

Im amazed anybody gave this place 1 star… The food here is the best in the world… The customers are not naïve white american Chicago natives… It is always packed with native Indian & Sri Lankan people… I have gone here 2x with different women friends… All 3 of us were amazed at the quality… Everybody would go back every day, if it were possible… You can eat vegan, vegetarian or animal food across the street at their sister restaurant, CURRYBOWL… The food here is insane…

You will walk out feeling stuff and didn’t even spend much. THISISMYFAVORITEINDIANPLACEEVER. The guy that sits everyone ALWAYS remembers my friends and I. The waiters are even awesome. We literally paid $ 30 for a feast and tons of different tastes. I love this place so much, I had them cater for my family event. They are so welcoming here, I have a new interest in the culture. I spend few hours in the area learning about Indian culture, buying their amazing clothes and books. Oh yea this place is also BYOB and they gave a free tastes of desserts which we loved. It is very authentic and is always packed. Open late also. I been their a lot and always bring friends.

The first thing you expect when you enter a restaurant is at least a greeting. So I walk in, greet this person at the counter who was not courteous enough to say hi. We then wait for 20 long minutes to be seated and what food we ended getting, did not even remotely satisfy our cravings for the typical south Indian food. The onion Uthappa did not have enough onions and wasn’t even cooked through. The Uthappa was so hard that I could play Frisbee with it. The chutney smelt a little stale. It was a total disappointment for the price we pay. I’m from Karnataka myself and when I walked in, I was expecting a surprise. Hell yea I got one, a bad one!

I had worst experience over here. I am from Bangalore and was expecting to eat authentic south Indian food, but I ended up having some junk and stale food. Never try this restaurant if you are expecting to rejoice on authentic south Indian food.

I mostly agree with Avinash T.‘s review with a couple exceptions. We ordered the samosa, special Rava Masala dosa, and mysore masala dosa. I thought the quality of the dosa, both rava and regular were great — superior to other places — crispy, tasty, great. However, the potatoes were absolutely horribly bland and the sambar even worse. I’ve seriously never had such bland sambar. My husband and I were split on the samosa — I thought the potatoes in them were actually quite good, but the samosa themselves not crispy enough. He wasn’t sure about the potatoes. Dinner was only $ 22, and again, the dosa themselves were fine, but without good toppings and fillings. not sure I’ll be back.

Masala dosa. It’s the pride and joy of every South Indian from Karnataka. It’s the dish most of us dreamt about eating on a warm lazy Sunday morning along with coffee. This place serves what they think is masala dosa. As there was no masala in it whatsoever, let me just review the«dosa», chutney, sambar and the potato Palya. In short– it was TERRIBLE Dosa was bland and tasteless. Chutney was too heavy on coconut. I get it. It’s coconut chutney. But chutney is about proportions, which they have not the faintest idea of. The potato palya was like bland smashed potato with a touch of turmeric in it. For the cook of Mysore woodland, for heavens sakes, there are more than enough YouTube videos on how to make GOOD potato palya. Please look it up and learn. Don’t insult a South Indian delicacy with this useless tasteless absolutely pathetic excuse of a terrible dosa. Oooo. Coffee does justice to its name !! It’s good :)

Went here with much excitement but only just about satisfied at the end of it. We had mini idly to start with. The menu said idly floating in sambhar. I was really looking forward to that because nothing beats the taste of the soft idly’s soaked in sambhar. What was served however were the mini idlies and sambhar separately. When we asked about this they just smiled :-/In all honesty though the taste was good. Next came our thaali — I have had better! Was not at all impressed with any of the food items in the thaali with the exception of vada. Not much taste otherwise. Bottomline, I would recommend getting just the South Indian tiffin items — Idly, Dosa, Vada. Service was good though and the coffee we had at the end of our meal was really good. Three stars for the tiffin items, coffee and service!

My boyfriend and I took my mom here when she was visiting one weekend and it was delicious. Well worth the hike, you can find a lot of great vegetarian options that are cheap and delicious. We ordered the samosa chat, an appetizer I can’t remember, tomato and peas uthappam, mysore masala dosai, channa batura, and had carrot halwa for dessert. The portion sizes are huge and we definitely ordered more than enough food for three people. The dosa was my favorite; it is delicious and bigger than your face… no joke. I also loved the samosa chat and whatever other appetizer we got. I enjoyed everything we ate except for the halwa(personal preference. my boyfriend said it was spot on) and the uthappam was good, but just a little too heavy for me. I’d definitely come back again. There was also a ton of Indian people when we ate, which makes me think this place is legit.

My roommates and I got takeout from here on a Sunday night. We ordered samosas, aloo gobi curry, paneer makani, naan, and a special rava dosa. All of the food was delicious, and we had plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day. The best part about our delivery was they made a special delivery out to our neighborhood that isn’t in their normal delivery area for a few more dollars. Because of a little farther commute the food was a little cold, but that was expected. I will be returning here once I travel out to Devon St again for some Indian food.
