The quality of the food is great, but I have had bad experiences ordering delivery and eating in the restaurant. In the restaurant, you feel ignored. We observed the wait staff arguing over who«had» to serve us. The«unlucky» one was rude and cold to us all night, and service was slow. Strangely enough, the were out of Coca-Cola. We decided to avoid eating in the restaurant so we ordered through Grub Hub instead. Their delivery fee is absurdly high – $ 5. We receive our food only to discover that there was no raita or pickles, despite the fact that these were to come with 2 of our entrees. There was also no chutney for the papadums – stingy. I called the restaurant to ask about the pickles and the raita, and the woman on the phone claimed they«were out,» which is absurd. It’s like ordering a burger and fries combo but they have no fries. Either they are unable to keep tabs on their stock, or they are intentionally shortchanging unwitting customers. Both are unacceptable. There is too much competition on Devon Avenue for shoddy treatment of customers.

I placed an order online through their website. They use a outside service for orders and it indicated a $ 4 delivery charge. After placing the order, the delivery charge ended up being $ 8! And they ask for a tip? I live about 2 miles from this restaurant. I called the restaurant to cancel, dealt with some communication issues, and then they cancelled my order. I had a craving for Indian food, but I’d rather make food at home with that charge.

Our first time trying south Indian food and we were blown away! The folks working here are super nice. Not a vegetarian but it wasn’t an issue at all. BYOB.

Food-wise it was decent. I ordered the two-foot long dosa and was not disappointed. That thing is massive! The potatoes and peas stuffed inside was well-seasoned and I enjoyed the chutney on the side. Frankly, that crêpe is enough for four decent meals(and maybe two if you’re not afraid of carb overloading). I also ordered the Bav Phaji because my friend said he really likes it. Well-seasoned and to my liking but the dosa is what you should come here for. It really is spectacularly large. However, service was a bit slow… I had to go up and ask for them to take my order. Also, I don’t get why they don’t give you a new pitcher of water. They just poured the water remaining in the pitcher that was sitting in the table… It was a little off-putting. I would give service a 2 or a 3 but the man was nice to me so I will overlook that and just stick with rating the food.

Awesome food. If I had any complain it would be service but it still gets a 5 for food.

I’d give this place 5 stars if it wasn’t for the poor service. I’ve been here multiple times and the food is awesome. Their dosas are as close as it gets to home crispy and just right. The other dishes pav bhaji and the paneer bhurji is great too. We have tried other Indian places on Devon but this is the best one we found so far

Terrible entrée. I asked for«less oil» on aloo gobi and what I got was oil-drenched vegetables, badly overcooked, strange and imbalanced flavors just this side of edible. The roti and rice were okay, but that is so simple I don’t give much credit for that. I do, however, credit very friendly and attentive service. That is why I give it two stars rather than one.

The food here is very good, and it’s cheap. But sometime the service can be quite slow. It was my Indian friend who introduced me to this place and he said this is very authentic. My favorite food here is snacks. Like Dahi Batata Puri or Bhel. I have tried the palak paneer, and it’s delicious! I’d definitely recommend this place!

I love this place. Be prepared for service that is not what you would call good service by US standards. But the Dosa is very good and the Sambar is the best I ever had.

If you have some time in your schedule and are craving a tasty and home-cooked vegetarian Indian meal, this is the place. They do not do the traditional buffet style but rather fresh off the menu. I enjoy their samosas, parathas, and letil/vegetable dishes. Service is slow so don’t go here if you are in a time crunch.

Being a non-veg, we were skeptical at first on if we’d like this place. But oh boy! What a delicious find(Thanks groupon!) I’m a frequent visitor of Devon, but never tried this place before. With the groupon, we got the Paper Masala Dosa along with other dishes(which tells you that the dosa was a hit!). It was a perfect combination of potatoes, spices and dipped into the sambar. man oh man was it good. I’ve returned to this place 3 times since then just for the dosa, and haven’t been disappointed. Highly recommended! Random fact: this place has the coolest décor! The service can be a bit slow at times but they are so genuine and nice, I don’t mind that!

Probably the worst Indian food I have eaten. Places like these are a disgrace in the name of Indian food. Add to it the service was poor and the ambience was like a funeral home. It’s a complete rip off for people who are not aware of how good Indian food can taste. The chef needs to stay as far away as possible from any kitchen. Save yourself and pleas don’t go there. One star is not intentional it’s default.

I was between 2 – 3 stars. Given the 4 star review, I felt it necessary to bring this place to a more reasonable level. I usually go to Mysore on Devon but we ended up trying this since the reviews looked decent. I’ll go back to Mysore next time. We walked in and they were pretty busy. The place is dimly lit(too dim) — we came in at 230 in the afternoon. It’s not clear what to do. We just stood there(I saw a few people do this after we sat down), until the guy putting the clean utensils together looked up and told us to sit at the table next to him. The place made me feel like I was in India — sort of disorganized and not the cleanest — I used the bathroom and felt transported to the Motherland — not in a good way. Once seated we looked at the menu and decided to share a masala dosa, chana bhatura and I wanted a masala chai. We sat there, wondering what to do and then I looked around. Maybe we order at the counter? I walked up and yup, I order there. We sat and waited — this place runs on IST — but we are in Chicago, so running on Chicago standard time is probably a good idea. After about 20 minutes, we got our chana. Really good. Then we got our masala dosa — I requested a crispy dosa but they failed to do that. Barely crispy, mostly soft. Sambar was a bit thick for my liking. Masala filling was standard. I asked about my chai. Oh, they forgot. 10 minutes later, I checked in again — «it’s coming» — then 10 after that, once I was done eating I checked again, still no chai. It was almost ready but at that point, I didn’t want it. Especially after I heard they didn’t have to-go cups. So it got cancelled. Food came out to average, service is poor, place is disorganized. I will say the manager was nice and apologetic but these are things that can be easily fixed for a better customer experience. Sorry, I’m going back to Mysore next time I’m on Devon and fulfilling my South Indian craving.

Really great food with okay service. We had the Mysore masala dosa — a potato filling wrapped in a thin bread with spicy sauce — which was quite good. We also ordered paneer bhutji — a hot stew with an almost salsa-like consistency made of cheese, tomato, and possibly eggplant. We also had a side order of puri, a friend airy bread that came with not nearly enough yogurt dip. Ordering can be a challenge for those new to Indian food. Our pronunciation of the dishes was so bad our server couldn’t understand what we were ordering and we wound up pointing at the menu. The menu descriptions are not very clear on what to expect and the server struggled to answer questions in English. You need to be willing to jump in with both feet and order things without knowing exactly what you’re going to get.(Thankfully, everything is vegetarian.) Based on our experience, you won’t go wrong so pick vaguely at random from different sections of the menu at about 1 dish per person and enjoy your feast.

Okay so I wasn’t sure what I would think of this place as I’ve never had South Indian vegetarian cuisine and as far as Indian food goes I always get my go to tandoori chicken and chicken tikka masala so I was kind of lost as ordering is concerned. But anyways, the place is spacious. We came in on a Wednesday evening around 8pm and there were a few tables open but then it did get fairly busy which I was surprised about. The place has TV’s blasting Indian music, murals all over the walls that mirror the streets of Devon, can’t say I didn’t like the environment. It’s a little confusing as there are numbers on the tables so I didn’t know if you order your food at the register and then you sit down or do you sit down and wait for someone. Anyways, we sat and they were a little understaffed in my opinion but the girl taking care of us seemed very sweet. We ordered a bunch of street food and I think that the samosas they have were seriously the best I’ve ever had. They alone get two stars, super super tasty. Super fresh and crunch and I’m still thinking about them. We got a paneer curry dish that resembled chicken tikka masala but without the chicken and added cheese cubes and I loved the flavors that I could just dip my naan into. That was super tasty, just wish I had the curry sauce without cheese cubes. We also got the paratha bread with another dipping sauce and that was also pretty tasty. So I know they are known for the dosas and I knew we had to get them, so we got the mysore masala dosa and I left disappointed. First of all, it wasn’t served hot and felt like it was sitting out for a while, which everything else was brought out steaming hot so that surprised us. It was full of potatoes but just lacked the flavor for me. I guess I like my crepes french style if you know what I mean. And for the carbs of Indian cuisine I’ll stick with the naan, lots and lots of naan. Overall, we had a nice time and they are byob so how can you not. I don’t know if I’m dying to go back but those samosas are something else I tell you. If you live near by I think it’s a great Wednesday or Thursday night type of place to bring your friends or family and chit chat over a glass of wine and some tasty food. Maybe I would try another type of dosa next time.

Everything is delicious– we usually order take-out/delivery from here and it always arrives very hot(live around 2 miles away) and exactly when Grubhub predicts(within 60 – 90 minutes of placing the order). I haven’t had anything I did not enjoy here– everything is very flavorful and the spices taste fresh. Things I’ve tried: malai kofta, rajma masala, mutter paneer, naan, alu gobi, tadka dal, palak paneer and samosas. Can’t wait to try more!

Great food, awful service. I’ve been here several times before, so I ignored all the Unilocal reviews about the bad service. Sorry, I don’t think wanting to get the food you ordered in a timely manner is a «Western» thing. Our whole meal took an hour and a half from the time we walked in the door until we got the check — all for 2 appetizers, 3 main dishes, and an order of naan. 15 minutes before anyone came to take our order. While we were waiting for our food 2 other servers came by to see if we were ready to order — seemed like all the waiters rotate around the restaurant, so no one really seemed to know what we had ordered or if we had ordered at all. When the entrees came, they brought 2 of them, but forgot the rice, and it was another 5 minutes before they came back with it. Our third entrée was MIA. One server said she’d go check on it, but never came back. Later we flagged down another server who went to check, came back, and said it would be 2 minutes. 10 minutes after that(a full half hour since the other entrees came out) it finally arrived. But the food was amazing — they have lots of interesting South Indian items on their menu that are a departure from the typical fare at Indian buffets. We had paneer pakoras, cheese naan, and green kachori(a fried dumpling filled with spicy lentils), palak panner, vegetable dumplings in curry sauce(almost tasted like a Thai or Asian curry, so good I would have been happy just eating a bowl of the sauce), and Mysore masala dosa(served with a coconut chutney). It was so hard narrowing down what to get, and there’s a dozen more dishes I’d like to go back and try, if I only had some guarantee that if I ordered the food it would actually make it to my table while I still remember what I ordered. If the owners read this review — please fix the service. Your food is too good to have to pass up because the service is so unorganized.

Came back again– which we will continue to do. Service is still horrible — the table next to us was about to lose their stuff. Knowing what to expect, we did not. Really, just be patient. Got the paper dosa(they were out last time) and it was great.

«You see, [they] know how to *take* the reservation, [they] just don’t know how to *hold* the reservation. And that’s really the most important part of the reservation.» After making a reservation and arriving 10 minutes early as the polite norm dictates, they wouldn’t honor it. In fact, their service was like lost sheep, wandering around, lost, not knowing what to do. They do not employ a host, or front person of any kind. No one comes up to you to ask, you know, the basics of «hello and welcome» and how many are in your party. So I flag someone down, ask them if there’s some sort of list we can put our names on, or alert any sort of individual that we were physically present. With utter bewilderment, he just said«no, there’s this line,» and walked away. So that’s their system, you line up in the middle of the restaurant, and out the door, because you can’t walk away and wait comfortably elsewhere because they haven’t mastered the timely art of Lists. So of course, we left.

I’ve been going to Devon with my parents since I was a kid, and had never been here(probably because its vegetarian). I am so glad I finally ate here — THISPLACEMAKESMELOVEVEGETABLES! Went with a group of 4 and tried 6 — 8 dishes. All were delicious(standouts are the Samosa Chaat, Mattar Paneer, Okra, Paper Masala Dosa). My only critique — the menu is overwhelming. A lot of items are a version of the same thing(i.e. 5 types of Dosas listed but the only difference between them is if it comes with potatoes or a chutney, or neither, or both). Would suggest making the menu smaller and adding numbers next to the items to make it easier to order.
