Proper Suit

I was in a more unique position than most Proper Suit clients (so I’ve been told) in that I was looking in the more casual end of the spectrum in sports coats to give my wardrobe more versatility. But much like others, I was having trouble finding things in my size off-​the-​rack and put simply, I wanted things to fit.
I think one of the most important things in finding a tailor is finding someone you can trust. Trust in fit, trust in style, and trust in quality. Kiyoshi, in the Chicago office, was that person for me. Although the garments aren’t made locally, he was much more than the guy taking down my measurements to be sent to the shop. He was instrumental in guiding me through the myriad of options available at Proper Suit, from the wide-​range of fabrics down to the fun things like contrast stitching, to helping me find my style that I’m excited about. I remember my first fitting with Kiyoshi when a few (inevitable) adjustments had to be made to my sports coat. I was already quite satisfied with the nearly-​finished product but Kiyoshi felt they could do better and ordered a full remake. The result exceeded even my highest expectations, so much so that I have a couple of more items on order!
I think Proper Suit has struck a happy medium between a more budget-​friendly approach in online tailors, where fit is hit-​or-​miss, and a more expensive approach where everything is done locally. Frankly, I don’t see a difference in quality in construction compared with the latter and both use fabrics from the same mills. Ultimately, I’m very happy to have found my go-​to in Kiyoshi and Proper Suit anytime I want to expand my wardrobe!

I was trying to find a MTM store in Chicago, so I bought two suites with two different vendors. Vendor 1 charged me $ 1K more than Proper Suit. The sales approach at Vendor 1 was a bit more sales oriented versus consultation. I got my suit in 6 weeks. The sports coat is nice but the pants come up on my waist way too high for my liking. I have worn the sports coat with the slacks three times in six months and wish I never bought it.
Proper Suit was different. I ordered a suit and it took forever. When it came it needed some alterations and then everything went wrong. The pants came back way too tight. BUT Richard did jump on it. He scrapped the first suit and ordered a new one. It seems to have taken forever (I first ordered in January and received the final suit in August) but when it arrived it wore beautifully on my body. I have re-​ordered a sports coast and several trousers with Proper Suit. Given their price point and willingness to stick with it until everything is to my liking, I have to give them high marks.

I just started a new association job requiring me to dress formally everyday and was in desperate need for some dress shirts and a new suit. I’ve been told in the past I can be ultra-​demanding and impatient but Kiyoshi was a true pleasure to deal with throughout the measuring and selection process — and really knew his stuff. A+ service and the quality of the material is great too. I’ll definitely come back.

What can I say? These guys are the best. Over the last few years, I’ve had a suit and a tux made by them. Both times, they nailed the fit and details off the bat. The process was so easy too. I happen to be someone who is pretty particular about his clothes and knew exactly what I wanted when I walked in, but I’d imagine the experience would be equally easy for a novice. The guys there really know their stuff and make it fun. Recently, I added a few lbs as we all do from time to time and I needed some alterations on both pieces. I brought them in, was quickly marked and measured, and sent on my way. Not log after I got a call and my pieces were ready. They nailed the alterations. I couldn’t be happier.

The Proper Suit experience is second to none. Having bought two suits from them now, I never my other ones, they don’t compare in quality or fit. Their custom fitting and suit designing experience is unique, and the finished product arrived ready to wear without any tailoring. Highly recommend.

Having previously been in the industry, I had reserved my expectations for the experience with Proper Suit but wanted to give it a try. I have broad shoulder with a slender build and pretty long arms… so finding a suit off the rack is tough (I usually just deferred to H. Boss and then have it tailored)
The space is comfortable and the fitting schedule is flexible. I was pleased to find the owner, Richard, more focused on finding what worked for me in place of just selling a suit.
The initial consult went well and appeared very detailed — fit, form, function, fabric, lapels, buttons, lining, the works. Tentative to jump in, I started with one suit to see how things went. 4 weeks later, happy to share the suit came in spot on.
I have since referred several close friends (who have all bought suits) as well as gifted a suit to my brother. Proper Suit also keeps your measurements on file so updating your wardrobe in the future is a breeze. Overall, very pleased with the entire experience.

Couldn’t have picked a better place for my first MTM suit!

I hate to just pile on the praise, but I could literally not be happier with my experience at Proper Suit. I have suits from other custom clothiers as well as high-​end off the rack suppliers. I can say with certainty that none of them fit as well or come with the level of customer service as my new Proper Suit does. In addition, the price is extremely fair for a custom suit of any kind, let alone one of this quality.
Richard and Kiyoshi have an excellent grasp on how a modern suit should look and feel, particularly when it comes to fit. I went in for a fitting 7 weeks before my wedding. 4.5 weeks later, I received my suit ahead of schedule and with absolutely no alterations needed (understand that this is rare, but it speaks to the time and attention that Richard put until taking my measurements).
Again, I could not be happier. I will be going back next time I need a new suit or overcoat.
