I stumbled across Union Handmade while strolling down Lincoln Avenue on a Sunday afternoon. The front windows contained simple, ethereal, white garments and a SALE sign — how could I resist?! The shop is beautifully curated, containing handmade clothing, jewelry, and other accessories. I picked up a supremely comfortable grey jersey dress that I will definitely be wearing year-round. My roommate was thrilled to see they stock Merchant and Mills sewing notions, and happily purchased some lovely mother of pearl buttons. The two women assisting us were very pleasant and helpful. They seemed genuinely interested in us, rather than pushy or distant like some retail employees. Price points are reasonable, considering the quality of the items. I will definitely be back!

I wandered into this store a couple weeks ago as I was strolling along Lincoln. I was attracted by the spare, unfussy clothing on the mannequins in the window. As someone who has worked retail before, customer service is a big deal to me. The store owner, Leigh, greeted me warmly right away. Leigh also designs and makes the clothes in her store. The word I used to describe her clothes to her was«understated,» which she said was one of the best descriptors she could hope for. These clothes aren’t flashy or über-feminine. They are minimal pieces with subtle details that hang beautifully on a wide range of bodies. The materials are gorgeous; I believe Leigh said she sourced some of them from France and Japan. The prices are not inexpensive, but you really do get what you pay for. This was more of an exploratory trip and I didn’t buy anything, but I look forward to returning and making some purchases soon-there’s a great pair of black moleskin side-zip ankle pants that are screaming for a place in my closet.
