Hula’s Chinese Bar-B Q

I tried Hula’s for the 1^st time today and I was pretty impressed… the veggies and meats were cooked to perfection, and I loved being able to choose different types of sauces… Service was great… the hostess and the waitress walked me through the process when I had told them I had never been there… the waitress brought us rice, a bok choy soup, and some wonton chips… I didn’t care too much for the soup but I loved the wonton chips… the buffet line looked really long but the cooks worked super fast… I will definitely be back to try new combinations of sauces

I do eat at Hula’s because sometimes I get serious carvings for fresh cooked vegetables. The food is good, you make it yourself. I have experienced the cooks carrying on inappropriate conversations while they are cooking my food. I don’t have small children with me, but still. Sorry to say wait staff is just about the unhappiest group of servers I have seen. You can get at least one round of water and rice out of them, after that its hit or miss. This is my experience at the 20^th street location. The location on East Ave is better. I think Hula’s is a great idea with huge potential, but it seems very poorly manged.

Our friend came into town and our first stop was to hulas, BUT Cathy our server was so incredibly rude it was embarrassing and a shame since our friend just flew into town. I don’t know if she was having a bad day and decided to take it out on us or what her deal was. Every question was met with a condescending tone and an eye roll, it was pretty ridiculous.

I like Hula’s but NEVER go there when it’s busy. You will wait 1 hour standing in line. Literally, I timed it. It’s great if you can sneak in for a late lunch or early dinner.
I am vegan, but they are always willing to clean the grill and cook it alone. They don’t even give you a dirty look. If you do have them clean the grill, be sure to leave a tip though!
They recently added bamboo shoots which I feel like I’ve been suggesting for a long time. Glad to see it. It would be awesome if they had some marinated tofu in additional to the regular tofu that is there.
I can never finish a bowl, but is is one of the foods I will willingly eat left over. i recommend it if you can go when it’s not busy.

Great food and lots of fun. Tons of choices whether it be off the menu or something you build yourself. Everyone is kind, the place is clean and food is tasty! Its entertaining to watch them cook your food after building your own dish. Prices are good and you get a great amount of food as well.

Always super long lines, but that’s to be expected when people are all creating their own noodle bowls. Super awesome idea and one of my favorite places to eat! (Suggestion: after work or school, grab a bowl of Hulas to go and sit back, relax, and watch a movie with friends or family). There’s a ton of food, so no need to worry about not having enough. Leftover hula’s is great too! Sometimes even better than the day/​night before

I went back lots of times! You make your own bowl and has one great price. Can either be unlimited buffet or take one bowl and you get to take your leftovers home. The leftovers are known by everyone to be the best! Definitely would recommend to anyone and eat again.

Let’s be clear: there are 2 Hula’s in Chico. The good one, and the bad one. This one off 20^th is clearly the bad one. Here’s a breakdown of my visit.
Lack of cleaning —
The floor was covered in dropped meats and veggies that had been there long enough to be ground into the tiles by other customers. The person in charge of cleaning these put noodles that had been dropped onto the counter BACK IN THE NOODLE BIN. This was after he grabbed dropped raw meat with his bare hands to throw away before he moved on to refilling all the other bins without washing his hands. The sauce station was drenched in sauces so that everyone’s tray bottoms were covered in cooking oil and grease that was then dragged everywhere else.
The wait —
We stood in line for over an hour while getting our food cooked. This was probably caused by the fact that their meats were frozen so solid, including freezer burn, that they could be used for shrapnel.
The quality —
Compared to Hula’s original location on East Ave. and Esplanade, all of the veggies were completely sub par. Bruised spinach, dried out zucchini, baby corn that had husk still on it, and tomatoes that were water-​logged.
Overall, this was disgusting. The only part of my dish I ate was the meat because I don’t like to waste protein.
This location is a disgrace to the Hula’s brand and, honestly, food poisoning waiting to happen.

I don’t like that they have a stupid one bowl policy at lunch. But other than that I do like Hulas. Their veggies are extremely fresh, the meat is frozen but those too are really fresh. I usually load my bowl up and just dump spoonfuls of their teriyaki, soy sauce and garlic sauce.
The lines back up pretty quick and sometimes you do get people that hold up the line trying to strategically fill their bowl.
The service sucks, other than the cooks. Multiple times I have gone and the host is busy dealing with payment and the servers just stare. They don’t go out of their way to seat people. I mean it’s a buffet where people get their own food wouldn’t you try to do what you can to get as much tip as you can? Just saying.

As far as atmosphere and flavor go, I give it 5 stars. The downfall is that they are very wasteful and not aware of world hunger or homelessness. They do not allow you to take home leftovers if you have made more than 1 bowl. I split my dinner into 2 bowls, and did not even touch the second bowl. They will now waste this food and throw it in the garbage. I feel that this is very unethical and sad. P. s. The egg rolls are a bit off.

I love Hula’s!!! You get to fill up your bowl with whatever you want, take it to the grill and they cook it for you. Very tasty! The service is always very good and the restaurant & bathrooms are clean.

Sadly disappointed at dinner last night, meat was dry and bland, and the cooks were whispering in each others ears dirty jokes, not the place! I guess that was why the food was undercooked. I went with high hopes it would be as good as the commercials made it look, but I was sadly disappointed, for the cost it should have been better. And. … they don’t serve Coke!

Fact is Hulas is SO GOOD; you choose the ingredients, all fresh… Choose the sauces, then watch your masterpiece cooked on an authentic Mongolian grid iron, Delicious, EVERYTIME !!!

Prices have raised tremendously & both of the times I have tried to eat here, I have gotten extremely sick.

Haven’t been here in a while. Good reason for it. Went to dinner and the egg rolls were soft and soggy.
I’m not going to wright some long thing.
Go to a good Chinese restaurant for the price you spend here.

I am generously giving 3 stars only because I love Hulas and I had the one very bad experience! My boyfriend from out of town came up to visit me and he wanted Chinese bbq so since I love Hulas so much and thought he would too, I suggested hulas so we went, everything was great until we took our first bites, both of our food tasted gross, just had a funky flavor. I was very disappointed that he had paid almost $ 30. For a bad meal and coming from Los Angeles he said it was by far the worst food he’s had. I felt embarrassed and disappointed next time I’ll be sure they clean the grill for us. I think maybe that was it.

My first Hula’s experience was last night. and I have to say, it couldn’t have been better! The portions are HUGE! The leftovers were delicious by the way. The employees were so kind, and were quick to satisfy your needs and fill your cup. There is also an endless amount of options to choose from when you fill your «raw bowl». I will definitely reccommend this place to my friends and I will be coming back.

Typically I like to visit a place more than once before reviewing. Hula’s will be an exception. The husband and I got 1 dinner for take out. I really didn’t believe him that it would feed both of us with left overs. It did! The dinner comes with a little bowl of soup, which was really yummy. It also comes with fried wonton paper and sweet & sour dipping sauce. Interesting. We packed our bowl full of all the delicious veggies, meat, noodles and sauces. It almost didn’t fit into one container (there is a sign that for 1 order it must fit into 1 take out container). But the lady got it to fit.
What can I say, it was wonderful when we got home. I’ll be back for sure!

We to Hulas after reading reviews and were taken back by such great service. The cute little hostess Lydia thought we were probably a pain in the butt, but she was more than accommodating to us when we wanted to switch tables. Seriously it was so busy but she made it happen!
Even the manger Larry made an appearance to or table, really I’ve not been to a restaurant were customer service is that good.
Ok now to the food not only do you get to pick out what you want in your bowl but you even get to watch them prepare it. And the sauces are to die for.
If you like the Mongolian stir fry this is your place I’ve never had such as good as this, now I know what all the rave reviews are about!
First customer service is amazing and most of all their food rocks!
