One of the best mountains in New England that is below 4,000 feet. This is a hiker’s classic, and views from the summit as well as many ledges in and around the summit are outstanding. There are many different routes up this mountain, but the easiest is the Champney Falls Trail(trailhead is on the Kancamagus Highway), which is about 7.6 miles round-trip. A more enjoyable trip is a loop using the Liberty and Brook Trails. This mountain is usually hike-able from late-May through early October. People do hike this year-round, but you need snowshoes and«traction»(often crampons for the summit) in winter. Try all the hiking routes on this mountain over the years. They are all varied and enjoyable.

Absolutely loved this hike. It’s quite a versatile mountain. We had hikers of all different levels and everyone enjoyed it. We trekked through woods, along the ridge, some 90 degree climbs on rock faces, lots of ups and downs, and lots of fantastic views. The 360 views at the summit was pretty amazing. The entire hike was awesome! We hiked the Piper Trail(~9 miles, half day) in early November and kept having to layer up and delayer, so be prepared! The summit is pretty chilly and windy. Also, use a trailmap, some markings have faded and there are a lot of different routes to take. Be prepared and do some squats and lunges beforehand! This hike is well worth it. Keep on trekking!

This mountain was a good time for a day trip. We drove a couple hours, and took the heel-toe express to the top. We thought we could blast up, full tilt boogie, without stops. We ended up taking a half a dozen or so breathers. The summit was magnificent. All of your energy is regained once your on top. The kind of place where you just want to howl at the moon til’ 3 in the morning. On the way down our«curly haired friend» went to make a phone call and took the wrong trail. We didn’t see him again until the parking lot. But we did find him, with the help of other concerned hippies, and trail buddies that we spoke with along our journey.(How were those vibram five fingers the next day?) We took the trail with the waterfall on the way, not sure the name. It took about 2 hours to get up the mountain. The way down, if we didn’t lose a companion, would have only been 45 minutes. It’s much less tiring on the way down, and we kept a steady jog. They pork you $ 3 to park at the bottom, but someone built a set of stairs out of stones on the trail, so that’s probably what that goes to.

This is more like a 10 star hike. The trail is in great condition and gradual except for a few switchbacks near the top. The view is 360 degrees including Mt. Washington and the Lakes Region. Definitely plan on 6 – 6.5 hours if you want to spend a lot of time on the summit. Be prepared for the hike even though it is a moderate one. The weather on the summit can be cold an windy even if it’s nice at the trailhead. Bring plenty of water, extra clothes, flashlights, etc. There was a large group of people hiking near us without any snacks and hardly any water. They turned around when things got steep. The scenery is great the whole way up including the Champney Falls Loop Trail.

Chocorua is one of the top«moderate» effort climbs in NH, and will reward your effort with really spectacular views of the presidential range and surrounding valley. Having said that, it’s 5 – 6 hours round trip, and can be very windy at the top. So make sure you bring: lots of water hat/sunscreen bug spray warm clothes in layers(or at least a windbreaker in early/late summer) trail mix or energy bars trail map! flashlight if you’re running late
You may also want some ibuprofen if you’re out of shape…
