Recently found myself back in this store after a few decades. I first came here in the mid 80’s and remember always appreciating Rick’s great service. For no real reason, I started going to another locale (no names will be mentioned) out of convenience and where I had spent most of my «prime» years of playing tennis throughout college and after. After experiencing some issues trying to transition into more modern frames and dealing with «age,» I found myself back as mentioned, just out of spite. It was a pleasure to see Rick was still around and remembered faces as well. You just can’t replace people who you would rather give your business to. I regret that I didn’t give Racquets and Strings my business throughout my entire experience of the game, and would’ve otherwise!

I am a beginner tennis player and had some old racquets in the garage. I wanted the racquets to be restrung and have the grips changed. I went to Racquets and Strings and met with the owner, Rick. He was a real gentleman. It was a real pleasure doing business with him. The customer service of Rick’s is second to none. I will recommend this shop to any tennis players, novice or professional. The best part of it is that he told me that for any reason that I don’t feel comfortable with the tensions of the string that I should just bring it back and he will change it to my liking for NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. Where else can you find a service like that? For all my tennis needs, I will not go anywhere else.
Before I left the shop, Rick gave me new tennis balls as a thank you to me for my patience as I wait for my racquets to be restrung and for me to enjoy playing tennis as a beginner. This guy is awesome! Highly recommended.

I came to Racquets and Strings because 1. I needed to restring my steam 99s 2. I needed someone who was knowledgable with strings to recommend a setup for me. This place gave me both.
I was a complete novice about types of strings, tension, etc but I figured I should learn about it after I broke my last 2 strings in 2 weeks or less. Now I play with heavy topspin and the racket has a very open pattern which maximizes spin but is a string breaker (playing 4 – 5 times a week).
Rick is very personable and you can tell that he really cares about his work, offering to restring it if after a few play tests you don’t like it. I explained my string breaking habit and let him choose what he thought was a good setup. It’s been 3 weeks strong and holding up well.
Bring change for metered parking and cash as he only accepts that. His rates are reasonable for the quality and knowledge that you get (esp if you’re a first timer). Not much apparel here so if that’s what you’re looking for might wanna check out other places.

Rick is awesome. Called other stringers and it takes at least 2 days for them to do it for you. Here, you can wait, drop off your racquet or whatever. Name it and Rick will try his best to work it out for you. He sells awesome tennis paraphernalias. And, he’s an instructor too.

I 100% recommend this place for all of your tennis needs. I went in to get a racket restrung. I walk in and the assistant answered a few questions for me. The owner, Rick, had gone out to the bank for a few minutes. I noticed that he had a lot (10+) rackets on the counter waiting to be restrung and decided to come back the following week to get the service done. On my way out, Rick had returned and invited me back in. He told me he could get my racket done in 20 minutes and even offered to pay for my parking meter. This guy is awesome! I hung out in the shop while he did the stringing and watched Anthony Bourdain on his little TV. He gave me some pointers during the service and even fully guaranteed the work. He said he would restring my racket if I wasn’t satisfied with the feel. Prices were extremely fair and the atmosphere was great.

The stringer, Rick, is precise. If you want your racket strung at 54 lbs, you’ll get 54, not 55 or 53. Prices are reasonable, and if you’re in a hurry he might even be able to string while you wait, as he’s done for me on several occasions. Just remember to bring a few coins for the meter.

I remember coming to racquets and strings in elementary school back in 95 – 97 when I first learned how to play tennis and when I needed a tennis racket restrung. After walking back in the store today, I had a flashback of that same time I first walked in and believe it or not the overall outlook is still the same. I brought in a tennis racket to get restrung and Rick the owner has always been helpful in whatever tennis essentials you need. For twenty four dollars you get custom strings done in less than thirty minutes. Rick is very knowledgable in the world of Tennis and he knows what type of tennis racket to purchase based on your budget and playing style. He doesn’t pressure you into buying any specific racket, he points out the pros and cons of each racket and lets you decide. He offers good deals on all his new and used rackets and might even throw in free strings, free grip tape or a free restrung when the stock strings bust, this place hands down is the best Tennis store in all of San Diego, I will be back to buy my future tennis racket and accessories in the near future. pros… haven’t been here in many, many years, say 20 years. yes, they have been here for over 20+ years, i know cause i used to get my racquets strung here when i played tennis in high school, way back when. the stringing is quick, good, and the service was usually pretty good. owned by two brothers, don’t know their names anymore. the older one, who’s head hair challenged like me, was the nicer one. the younger skinny one, was not as helpful and bit on the grumpy side as well. don’t ask that one too many questions.
parking is hit or miss, usually depends on what time you go. since they are in old chula vista, right on 3^rd street, it is usually crowded. and you have to pay as well, metered parking. when i went the selection of racquets and strings was pretty good. i think i even bought a racquet from them, got the student discount as well. they also had badminton and squash racquets as well. but of course it is has been a long time. i will have to go back again.
cons… parking, parking, parking. that skinny guy, sometimes not the friendliest person to ask questions about the racquets/​strings/​tension, and other things a newbie would ask. all in all a nice place to go in chula vista, and their service speaks for itself, since they are still there after 20+ years!

I brought my racquet/​racket there yesterday for a long overdue restringing, which I’ve kept putting off because I was sure that the day I dropped my racket off somewhere, R-​Fed would come knocking on my door asking to hit a few.
But now that he’s married, I figured I could take the risk…
No risk necessary!
The extremely friendly and fun-​loving guys at R&S had my racket restrung in 30 minutes. They gave me a first-timer’s discount so my total was $ 25, a great deal.
Plus, witty repartee at no extra cost! Seriously, these guys are the Car Talk of a tennis shop. Two brothers that effortlessly bounce the zingers off each other. I just hope the accuracy and power of their zings translates osmosis-​wise into my freshly strung racket!
