I stumbled upon this place during a road trip to the legendary Freddy’s located across the street. It’s a small mom & pop place run by a very nice lady(Elena?). The décor is charming south of the border kitsch. The food is absolutely outstanding! Nothing fancy or daring, just well-executed standard Mexican fare. My first trip here I ordered pancakes(yes, I like to clash cultures when ordering). Who knew that a Mexican joint could make such heavenly pancakes? The best I’ve had in the Chicago area and that includes Sweet Maple Café! You may want to bring a small bottle of real maple syrup since her syrup is of the Jemima/Butterworth ilk(I don’t think Elena prohibits outside condiments a la Monk’s Café in Seinfeld). I’ve followed up with enchiladas and burritos that will knock your socks off(wear huaraches when you go there just in case). Everything is made to order, so expect a bit of a wait. I’d suggest the following sequence: place order, go across the street to Freddy’s, get the featured pasta and risotto dishes, return to Elena’s, pick up order, sit down and eat the kind of Mexican food your grandmother would make if she came from a small Mexican pueblo.

Took my pup for a walk and decided to check this place out a few weeks ago. The first day I went i really enjoyed my tacos, i had one chicken, asada and chorizo all with cilantro and onions only. they were so good! and the lady was super nice. Today I decided to go for breakfast because they had a breakfast burrito i wanted to try. So me and the man walk there and i realize the burrito is only until 12, it’s 12:10. So i ask the lady(a different one from my previous visit) if its ok if I still get the breakfast burrito she said no. poop! so i order his food while deciding what i want. So asked if i could still order off the breakfast side and she said yea thats all day!!! makes no sense to me… so I ended up with huevos rancheros, why i dont know because i hate sunny side up eggs. I was pretty bummed and ate it. the horchata was watery but the lemonade was good. oh the tortillas on all 3 of his tacos were super hard. i dont think i’ll go back =(
