I have very mixed opinions about Gander Mountain. My ambivalence stems from the observations I have made about their very vast selection of clothes, shoes, sporting goods, firearms etc… They have many items to offer. This aspect I like very, very much. They feature quality, name brand goods along with some lesser known brands. All that I observed seems to be of very good quality. It is tough to find so much under one roof and I truly have enjoyed my visits to this store. One interesting observation is that I was only approached with an offer of assistance from an employee in the shoe department. Otherwise, I was ignored or saw no employees present to offer assistance. That is a double edged sword: at times, I do not want anyone to bother me and other times, I want some expert advice. So, I visited the entire store: men’s clothing, women’s clothing, fishing gear, hunting clothes, firearms, ammunition, tactical gear… I was in never approached nor could I easily find any employee for help. If you like to browse, but not buy, this place may be for you. In contrast, I fully realize that I can purchase almost every item on display at Gander Mountain for 10% to 50% less either at a brick and mortar competitor or an online store. One specific example is the price Gander Mountain asks for a Merrell hiking boot vs. a local competitor vs. an online store. Sorry, I’ll save $ 50.00 and wait 2 or 3 days for shipment. It’s worth the wait. I have visited several times and enjoy browsing their merchandise displays but, the prices and lack of customer service prevented me from making any purchase.
