For 3 years of my life I lived less than 10 houses away from Demetrios and yet I had never tried their food until a week ago. A few friends decided to meet at Demetrios for Sunday brunch because the wait at National Exemplar was just too long. Unfortunately the breakfast menu left a lot to be desired: eggs, pancakes, french toast, goetta. Nothing with any creativity. My husband elected to order a gyro as the menu insisted that they had the best gyro on the east side. Whoever made this claim hasn’t eaten a gyro on the east side. Ever. The meat was completely flavorless and the tzatziki sauce seemed like it was just sour cream. I elected to forgo a meal here and I was quite happy I wasn’t wasting my money on food I could make better myself at home.

I’d been hesitant to eat at Demetrios because the parking lot suggested that they were serving up Black Plague inside(aka the parking lot was always empty). I finally stopped in one afternoon because I saw a group of people leaving with smiles on their faces and, more importantly, free of any visible type of plague. Also, I was feeling something Greek on this particular day(after all they advertise themselves as a Greek restaurant)… maybe something with olives, cheese, yogurt. Sadly, I’m here to report that Demetrios is as Greek as McDonald’s is Mexican. Here’s a list of the Greek items offered at Demetrios: Greek Salad Gyro I’ve seen more Greek menu items at the Cheesecake Factory for real. Here’s the thing though, everything I’ve had at Demetrios is good. I’ve had their burger and fries(better than average), I’ve had their breakfast(pretty standard diner stuff here and that’s not a bad thing), I’ve had their 4-way(it’s no Blue Ash Chili but it’s good). And that is my problem with Demetrios. They have an identity crisis. They really need Gordon Ramsey and the Kitchen Nightmare crew to come in and do a once over on the place. But that’s probably not going to happen any time soon so here’s my suggestion to Demetrios and/or the owner — Embrace your diner-style menu(you have good cold cut sandwiches as well as all the other aforementioned food). Revamp your image as a diner instead of a Greek family restaurant. And then throw some coupons out there to advertise your newly re-imagined restaurant. I truly think this place could get much more business with minimal effort, the food is good but I just don’t think people know it. And who doesn’t like a diner? Anyway, for now, if you’re looking for a quick cheap lunch or breakfast in Mariemont this place is definitely worth checking out. But don’t expect anything more than diner food!

We went fit dinner at about 6:45 on a Saturday evening, not realizing that they closed at 7. To their credit, they were very friendly to people who arrived at closing. Who closes at 7 on a Saturday? The menu had very little Greek on out which was disappointing. E both had burgers which were ok.

Most interesting and ORIGINAL Burger in Town — The Demetrios«Greek Burger»! Made with a mixture of ground Gyro meat and Hamburger, spiced just right, dressed nice and sloppy with tzatziki, lettuce, onion, and tomato and served on a two fisted bun; order it with some Greek Spiced French Fries and you will find yourself vowing to return. This, I guarantee!

When I lived in Mariemont I never ate here because I heard a lot of reviews saying it was for old people and the service was rude. When Erica and I decided to try it, the service was friendly and quick, but it’s definitely full of old people. We also tend to go for Sunday lunch, which I think is some sort of old people holiday. The food is pretty good though– it’s typical greasy spoon fare, but always hot and fresh. They have a huge menu and my only complaint is that I can never decide what I want. The prices are reasonable and the portions are plenty. We’ve been back a few times since our first visit and I’m sure we’ll go back again.

Demetrios is an odd little spot. I had no idea it was even there; Dan used to live in Mariemont and was much more familiar with the area, but he’d never stopped in. It’s, uh… how do I put this? It’s a place for old people THERE I SAIDIT. The thing is: hot spots for blue-hairs tend to be right up my alley. Demetrios IV was no exception. As Dan perused the menu I eavesdropped on conversations about grandkids and taxes(no joke) as people sipped coffee and noshed on plates of eggs. I was very at home. If you hadn’t guessed from the name, Demetrios is owned by a Greek family. Thus, if you order the chili, don’t expect the Texan kind.(Yea!) I had a 4-way(spag, chili, red beans and cheese)– it was in the Gold Star tradition.(Double yea!) Dan had some kind of chicken-cheese-bacon fiasco and he enjoyed it. This is not a place for out-of-this-world dining, but it’s a comfortable spot with family photos on the wall and comfort food you can count on. It was delightful new find, and I can see myself there again. Maybe even for the 4-way.

Demetrio’s is best for lunch, in my opinion. I wouldn’t drive out of my way to go there, but if you’re in the area grab some grub at this cozy little restaurant. My favorite order is any of their totally humongous double-decker sandwiches. You could use the piles of meat out of one these monsters to make regular sandwiches for the week.

Demetrios is just a simple sandwich/burger joint. But I’m a fan of simplicity. My kids absolutely love this place. Whether we’re all meeting from our various excursions for a quick family lunch, or it’s just the husband and I stopping for coffee and breakfast, Demetrios has the cozy, family atmosphere that we love. I’m a pescetarian now, so my options have opened up a bit, but in my vegetarian-only days the cheese and tomato sandwich was just fine for me. The staff has always been helpful if I had a question about stuff like the broth the soup was made out of(vegetable vs chicken), where most places I’ve been to shrug and say they don’t know. And if you are a meat-eater, my husband says the greek burger(a fairly new addition to the menu) is fantastic!

Is it just me, or do all Greek-owned family restaurants have great service and serve good food? I like to frequent this diner when I’m in the mood for a gyro or gyro burger(half lamb, half beef burger) and fries. The wait-staff is so friendly and it feels like home whenever I eat there, so it’s hard to not give positive feedback. Normally, I’m eating lunch solo, so I typically take a seat at the bar, which has a perfect view of one of the few flat screen TVs. The service is great, the family is friendly, and – though the décor is sub-par and food isn’t necessarily something to write home about – it is good enough and well worth patronizing this local restaurant.

This place is great… best home fries around, great goetta and cheese omelettes. The gyro is exceptionally good… service is awesome. All that and the price is very reasonable. Whats not to like?

I love dive restaurants and being a «dive» is not always a bad thing. Demetrios is a family-dive restaurant in the sense that its locals only and has a real regular-favored atmosphere. This does not mean if you do not live in Madisonville/Marriemont/Indian Hill you should not venture in but just know this is not 4 star dining just because its near Indian Hill. Its good down home cooking, its the last remaining restaurant owned by a local Greek family, it was originally owned by the father but now is owned by the two sons. The wait staff is family, literally. The food is all home cooked mom food from meatloaf to double-decker sandwiches. I go there for only one thing: gyros. There gyros are amazing even though you know there are not home made. The pita is grilled, the meat is hot and the sauce is the only thing made by the restaurant. The creamy Tzatziki is really good. I recommend since this is a grease overload you might as well order French fries and putt them in your sandwich with Frank’s Red Hot and you got a delicious sandwich. (warning: this is not a place for vegetarians unless you really just want a salad and vegans. well…tough cookies)
