The Original Mattress Factory

The selection here may not be as extensive as some of the other chain mattress stores, but that doesn’t mean the quality suffers! And the customer service is above and beyond what Ive gotten at some of the chain stores. I was easily able to find a comfortable mattress in my price range, and scheduled delivery without difficulty. After the mattress was delivered and the delivery guys left, I noticed a tear on one of the corners (lesson to me to really inspect the mattress carefully before they ask you to sign that it’s in good condition!). I called and told them the problem and Ellie was fantastic and able to get a sales rep out to me to look at the damages the same day (a Saturday no less). The sales rep was great and worked with my schedule to have the bed picked up, the cover changed, and back to me all within 5 days of the initial call, and at no additional charge. Great experience!

Honestly, this was as good as it gets.
I had never been mattress shopping before but I was putting on a brave buyer face and pretending like I knew what I was doing. I had checked out some of the competition, but nothing seemed right — either I felt they were trying to push a certain brand on me (you have to try a Sealy! You have to!) or just working me to make a sale. It just didn’t feel right.
Finally, I consulted with my social media and asked for recommendations on where to go. I got one answer: Original Mattress Factory.
So what makes them different? They sell their own brands straight from the factory, which first of all is cheaper. But secondly, they know their stuff. You walk in and the sales associate feels like he’s trying to educate you, not just sell you.
What I loved best about OMF is their displays. They have tons of mattresses with the padding ripped out, so you can see the inside of what you’re buying. They also have examples of their competitions lined up next to theirs, so you can compare. It was fantastic.
I wasn’t intending on buying that day … just shopping around. But after laying on a mattress I loved and being educated about why it would hold up, I bought. It was cheaper than the competition (coming in to just over $ 1,000, and that included box spring, delivery and take away of the old mattress.)
The delivery guys couldn’t have been more professional. They called me the day before with a window of time to delivery and said it would probably be in the first half — sure enough, by 10am, there they were. Two guys came in, wrapped up my old mattress, took it down to the truck, brought out the new sealed mattress and took it to my apartment. The whole thing took less than 20 minutes and it was fantastic.
After doing research on OMF, I found glowing reviews. In fact, the one major downside all the websites talked about was that they’re only in Ohio, so you have to travel to get to them … that is, if you don’t already live in Ohio. *score*
I literally just woke up from my first night on the new mattress and I loved it. This is my recommendation on where to go by far.

How can you tell when a salesman is being honest? When what he’s telling you agrees with your product research.
Before going mattress shopping, I did research via my trusty Consumer Reports. Also, I consulted
for mattress brand satisfaction ratings. It’s like Unilocal for bedding.
Here’s what I learned:
— Don’t buy Serta, Sealy, or Simmons. All have complaints of sagging after the first couple of months.
— Don’t buy a one-​sided pillowtop mattress, as it cannot be flipped. (Flipping a mattress semi-​annually increases its lifespan.)
— Quality mattresses cost between $ 700 and $ 1,200.
— Look for a large quilt pattern on the fabric for the best cushioning
— Ticking, the outermost layer, is typically polyester. Damask is used in high-​end mattresses.
— Look for a mattress that has a metal rod frame, not just foam around the edge. Foam edges = sagging.
After some unsuccessful browsing at other stores, fellow Unilocalers recommended we try an Original Mattress Factory.
Salesman Greg greeted us as we walked in the store. One half of the store was divided into flippable mattresses, the other had the dreaded single-​sided pillowtops. He led us over to the flip section, which was arranged from firm to soft. We started in the middle and moved down the line until we found the perfect comfort. Torn between two models, I pulled out my list of questions for Greg.
«This is a double sided pillowtop. How does it hold up? Can it be flipped?» Greg pulled out a sample of the mattress which was cut open. He showed us the construction of the layers, and explained how the framework allowed both sides of the pillowtop to stay plush. I even got to reach in and push on the padded coils to feel his explanation.
Greg also showed us the wire framework around the edge of our mattress, unlike the Serta, Sealy, and Simmons which had edges made of foam. The three «S» brands skimp on quality mattress construction to keep prices low, which leads to a sagging mattress.
After a careful comparison, we purchased Orthopedic Premier Super Pillow Top Mattress & Box Spring
which cost just over $ 1,000. (Although my strong opposition to pillowtops, having one on each side of the mattress makes it flippable. If it was a single pillowtop, the reverse side would be flat.)
The other we had considered was a traditional flippable mattress: Orthopedic Ultra Plush
We purchased the other model because it was one level softer than this mattress, but both were comfortable — to each his own. Price $ 770
I was very pleased with the honest service we received at the Original Mattress Factory. Greg was straightforward with us and all of his explanations agreed with my Consumer Reports research. We were able to find and commit to a mattress the same day, and delivery was arranged for two days later. Delivery fee, setup, and old mattress haul away cost $ 50, half of what the «other guy» charges.
