In 1965, the founder of Mr. Hero opened his first submarine shop on Cleveland’s Westside. Since that time, Mr. Hero has expanded the market to Toledo, Columbus, Akron, and all throughout Northeast Ohio. The Romanburger is simply outstanding. It’s a cross between an Italian sub and a hamburger. This is one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever eaten, so I’m dying to know why this place doesn’t make it on to Diners Drive-ins and Dives, Andrew Zimmern’s: Bizarre Foods, Man vs Food, or Anthony Bourdain’s: No Reservations. I watch all of these shows religiously and I have never seen or heard of Mr. Hero being on. Mr. Hero is a Cleveland gem that no one knows about outside of Northeast Ohio. Anyway, a Romanburger, if you’ve never had the pleasure of swallowing one, is a CLEVELAND-BORNSANDWICH! It consists of two juicy grilled burgers topped with melted Swiss American cheese, grilled Genoa Salami and Italian Luncheon loaf served on a bed of shredded lettuce with tomatoes, onions, a sprinkle of Mr. Hero’s original Italian oil’n spice and topped with their own special recipe mayonnaise — served on a hearth baked Italian roll. OMG! Get some! Also, the Hot Buttered Cheesesteaks are the best outside of Philadelphia and probably the best in Cleveland. They are delicious. Did I mention the fries? Yep. Mr. Hero also serves some of the best fries around too. They’re cut differently than most restaurants and they call them, «Potato Waffer Fries». They are always cooked to perfection — crispy, hot and delicious. The only complaint I have is some of the owners cheat you. They give you a small sandwich. At other stores, the same sandwich will have twice the toppings. Make sure you get the biggest size they offer, you won’t regret it.
