Paul Bunyan Pak-Out

Hands down the best Huckleberry Shake anywhere. Whenever I travel to the Northwest I search out Huckleberry’s and this is the best shake I have found.

Good burgers and gems (tater tots)!!! Little slow but it’s fresh. Not the best customer service but delicious. My husband loves the fresh onion rings and shakes too!

The two times I have been there, it smelled like stale/​mildewy dishrags.
I don’t know if that will keep me from getting more shakes there, though. Glad they’re open late.

Paul Bunyan has been a staple in CDA for decades, and the food and shakes are always delish! On my last trip to the PB, I got a grilled cheese, tots (with the yummy fry sauce), and a diet coke (although there is really no reason to go diet there!), and I loved it. Obviously it’s not the healthiest option in town, but for the most comforting comfort food, it’s the way to go. Plus, the staff – hipsters/​millennials but with a solid work ethic – are cool and friendly. I highly recommend Paul Bunyan – and this even from a vegetarian! Plus, they have amazing shakes – I like huckleberry!

Stopped in here the other night and had two car ahead of us. We had ordered some huckleberry shakes and it took about 30 minutes to get. When we finally got to the window the young man working made a smart comment about how it hadn’t been that long but according to our receipt it had.

Good was good but not the best and the location was perfect for where we were staying. I’d like to go back to try their huckleberry shake.

Food is good. Parking is impossible!
Service is less than friendly. The menu offers no help determining what to order. You are given a list of burgers like «blue ox» but given no description of what that is. However, it was tasty and only cost me $ 5!
Fries were way to salty.

Overrated. The hamburger and fries appear to be mass produced in a factory right off the food service truck. There are many better options for a good local burgers and fries in CDA. I did not have a shake and that might offset the disappointing burger and fries.

Good solid road food. Great prices. A throwback to a time before interstates.

Stopped by on a cross country road trip to try a Huckleberry milkshake. It was tasty, not amazing. It was the first time I had Huckelberry anything though so it could just be that I don’t love the flavor. Got some fries too and ate it all in the park across the street, enjoyed both.

Delicious food! I devoured the bacon cheese burger and yummy greasy fries. Special sauce is good and free! Awesome service & great prices.

Not the best. Service was poor, food was poor. Get what you pay for I guess. When ordering there was no greetings, when we pulled he didnt say it would be just a moment, and we stat there, handed us milkshakes and took our money. Handed us the food and said he you go. Didn’t ask if we needed any condiments, had to ask for mustard. The huckleberry milkshake was just syrup and frozen huckleberrys. They were slimmy and tasted bad. The hotdog was a warmed up frozen hotdog not cooked all the way. In short its not worth the trouble or the money.

Big, cheap burgers that are pretty much all the same price. That’s what this place is all about.
As far as quality goes, it’s a fast food restaurant and you should understand that going in. That said, their burgers are among the best fast food burgers I’ve ever had. My friends and I used to make frequent trips to CDA and would stop at Paul Bunyan every time.
Décor is limited to a poor but endearing wall painting of Bunyan and the Blue Ox along with old photos of the building and owners. There are two or three booths and a couple of tables. Limited outside seating is also available and comes with a view of the parking lot. This is a no frills place.
If the small, four space parking lot/​drive thru is full, don’t be deterred.

Admittedly this place might not be for everyone. It’s the typical American food from the days of the 1950’s drive-​ins but it is so Americana. For myself, it is a precious part of my childhood and whenever I return to Coeur d’Alene I am relieved to see it hasn’t been turned into a condo or strip mall. My favorite is the Blue Ox burger. If you want something that is unpretentious a timeless part of the town’s historical cuisine this is a must.

It is kind of a weird place, but it works. Cheap, fast and delicious little burgers. I have been back several times now.

I Only get Paul Bunyan once a year-​as i live in CA, but I’ve never been let down by a trip to the big blue ox. I love the burgers here! Who doesn’t want a hamburger with a pack of lunch meat thrown on top.
Milk shakes are awesome-​so many different options of ice cream infused deliciousness and amazingness.

OK, so I can’t vouch for the legitimacy of the burgers and fries, but I’m guessing by the number of teenagers and septuagenarians crammed into their little dining area that PB does it up right.
Why didn’t I try a burger? Because I was lured in by the promise of huckleberry milkshakes, and besides, I had a Dangerous dog cooling its heels on the seat next to me. The shake was great, by the way. There were real, whole huckleberries. What?! I know. I actually removed the lid and drank the dregs (milkshake foam) because I wanted every single damn huckleberry. Worth it.
The service was a little slow, but the place is pretty small (including the parking lot – beware getting in and out of there), so I kind of chalked it up to that.

I grew up in Idaho and haven’t been back for years, so when I saw a sign for huckleberry milkshakes at this burger place I got very excited. We didn’t go until the end of the trip, but after spending the day at the beach, we decided that the almost 90 degree weather warranted a milkshake. The girl making my my milkshake was extremely friendly, chatting with me the whole time, while still making two milkshakes in an efficient manner (something that seems hard for a lot of people.) I was thrilled when I saw her put a full scoop of real huckleberries in each milkshake, and we weren’t disppointed when we started drinking them. They were thick and delicios, and there were a plethora of huckleberries at the bottom. Now that I live in Western Washington I never get huckleberries, so this was a big treat for me and my mom. Definitely worth the money!

A very quaint, adorable «fast food» joint. I use the term «fast food» but I sort of just mean that you can drive though, it is quite a slow operation.
The place is always packed with locals and kids from NIC. The prices are great for a place that is not a chain. The iced tea is pretty great on a hot day and they got that crushed ice. I love that stuff.
There is a tiny parking lot, fyi. Employees are not too friendly, but I love supporting small, local businesses!

My entire extended family, save for mine and my cousin’s, lives in coeur d’alene, idaho. every summer of my life and a couple winters we have made the journey to my grandma’s little house on the lake, where we go to swim, visit family, and eat at my dad’s old favorite burger joints.
this one is about five minutes form grandma’s house, so it’s a much visited site by my family. try the bunyan burger or the babe the blue ox burger or the pizza burger. i personally don’t eat meat anymore which doesn’t give me a lot of options, but the fries and fry sauce are top notch and the shakes are perfect on summer days. they usually feature lots of local berry flavors (i like the huckleberry) among the usual candy bar type flavors.
just a taste of the small town life that my parents must have lived. that’s what i think about every time we stop at bunyan burger.
