I ran across an entry for the Chicken District, so I had to write a review. I spent a lot of time in this area when the Columbus Idea Foundry was still on Corrugated Way. Columbus’s Chicken District, also know as «Fifth and Chicken» a play on the intersection of «Fifth and Cleveland» or «chicken corner», is a small intersection of Columbus that has the highest concentration of «take-aways» in the city. In it’s heyday, there were 7 chicken shacks within a half mile stretch of 5th ave. Since that time, the shack on the northwest corner of the intersection(A&M) suffered a fire and was leveled completely back to a gravel lot. The Popeye’s on the southeast corner was out of business last time I passed through. Lastly, Woody & Jo’s rib & chicken shack on the corner of 5th and 4th closed as well. Remaining restaurants include the chains of Church’s and KFC on the northeast corner, and further east on the other side of the 71 overpass, is the non-chain Royal. I’ve also heard tell of an even smaller chicken shack in one of the neighborhood gas stations, but visit too infrequently to discover it. Being such a quick hop over from the short north/Italian village/campus/fairgrounds area, it’s no surprise that the three remaining contenders are usually fairly busy around meal times. But it’s not the same as it was in the heyday, and with buildings being leveled for gentrification, I’m not sure it would ever have the same, ridiculously excess feeling to it. But if you’r ever looking to fill up with great fried food for under $ 10, there’s no better place than 5th and chicken.
